Download SRWare Iron browser and give it a try. I use it on Android, ChromeOS, macOS and Windows for a much less resource-intensive browser experience.
It is one or the best Chromium based cross-platform browsers (in my opinion) and has support for plug-ins if you choose to pollute your system with them.
I've been using a 4a since August. It hasn't had any heat issues so, not sure what to say about that...
I do not use Chrome (SRWare Iron is a far leaner & meaner browser) and disabled as many Google apps as possible.
I tried a 4a 5g for a couple of weeks (which also had no heat issues) and decided to stick with the slightly more compact 4a.
It was worth the upgrade at $200 discount for a new line sign-up but at anything less than $100 off of the retail price, I don't think so for such old hardware.
The (soon to be released in the US) Asus Zenfone 8 may be something to consider near full 4a 5g price range. It essentially consists of S21 innards in a (slightly taller) Pixel 4a form factor.
I have not tried it.
My goto Chromium-based browser on Android, IOS and macOS is SRWare Iron browser.
Installed it on Pixel 6 that just arrived yesterday and previously used it extensively as primary browser with OnePlus 8 and Pixel 4a (both running Android 11). Runs stable and does not crush resources.
I've had bouts of instability and resource hoggage issues with Firefox occasionally.
SRWare Iron is another very nice Chromium-based option if you want something lean and mean (runs on Android, Chrome OS, iOS, macOS, Linux and Windoze too).
No way I'd ever use Brave or, the same Kool-Aid flavor marketed Freedom Phone.
Chrome and Edge generally are resource pigs across various platforms and depending on what plug-ins you are using, they too can be a contributing factor.
I use SRWare Iron which is a lightweight and privacy-focused Chromium based web browser on Android (Pixel 4a and OP8), Chromebook (HP x360 and Lenovo Duet), macOS and Linux platforms 99% of the time (unless an app specifically requires Chrome).
You may want to give it a try.
Neither!
I use SRWare Iron primarily for three reasons:
Iron it is not yet M1 optimized which is ok... Rosetta2 does not add much overhead.
Never been a fan of Firefox. It remains puzzlingly/randomly unstable on various platforms and though less of a resource pig than Chrome or Safari, it is still a bit too jolly in the gut for me.
I use SRWare Iron on Android, ChromeOS, macOS, Linux and Winblows (when I have to for work).
Haha yeah!
No Chrome for me and Ffox hasn't been the most stable on various platforms.
I use SRWare Iron which is lean 'n mean and works well on a bunch of different OS platforms (including Android / Pixel 4a).
Chrome is the penultimate resource hog and Safari is not too far behind.
Chromium-based SRware Iron is far more lean & mean and actually protects your privacy as well. It is also available on all major platforms.
