Standard Notes (https://standardnotes.com/)
Fits most if not all your criteria, but to really get the most out of it, you will likely want to pay for the subscription.
I use Standard Notes for saving notes that I don't want other people to read, my notes are encrypted before being uploaded to the server. I use their service, but you can self host your own server.
Hi there, the Plain Editor is based on the web-based editor that is provided by the operating system running on the device someone is using. In all cases, there aren't any rich-text formatting options. You can install editors provided by Extended or the community if you would like to install editors that include rich-text formatting options.
To "change" your email, you have to export your notes and import them into a new account, more details here.
As for deleting without access to the email, I don't think it's possible. You could just delete all the notes after transferring to a new account.
You didn't share your OS, but on Linux you could use Authenticator or OTPClient. If you want something cross-platform that will sync to multiple devices like Authy, you could give TokenVault in Standard Notes a try.
Extended users can set a custom domain for their Listed blog. 🙂
You can access your Listed blog's settings via the Action menu of the desktop/web app. The settings page will open in your default browser and you can then follow the instructions provided and submit a request that will be manually reviewed and within a week (usually a a business day if possible) your custom domain will be connected to your blog.
I haven't done it myself, but it should be possible, although this solution relies on some kind of other platform called FileSafe.
What I like about SN is that it has a decent community, and support for themes and extensions.
Thank you. Will definitely do this. Already downloaded an note-taking app that syncs with all my platforms and is privacy-oriented, protected with password, so I can feel safe. (It's called StandardNotes by the way, check it out, it's cool!)
> So, hypothetically, you could just enter a dummy string of letters and this would still function as a username in order to sync accross devices?
Yup.
> May I ask what an account reset is?

And lastly without a valid email we can't offer you support on your account, in case something goes wrong generally speaking. So you wouldn't be able to contact us for account-related help.
Exactly as stated above, not a free feature, but here you'll find some more info:
https://standardnotes.com/help/71/how-do-i-add-images-to-my-notes
Does it say anywhere it may be a "conflicted copy"? As per this article, this is a feature introduce to ensure no data is lost when the network connection is spotty.
That new model would be less private than what you have right now. You don't have to worry about Standard Notes leaking your personal notes
I suppose you could always create a private subreddit and post stuff there, but, well, reddit admins could still see what you're up to. I wouldn't trust reddit to keep "private" subreddits 100% private, anyway. And because reddit isn't designed for that sort of thing, finding old entries might be tricky. But I can't think of any major problems with the idea. Though personally I would use something like Standard Notes just because it's actually designed for this sort of thing and is unlikely to go wrong somehow.
Still reviewing the Android ones but here's a couple: https://www.noteapps.ca/nextcloud-notes-v3-2-5-scores-7-out-of-10/
https://www.noteapps.ca/quillnote/
Standard Notes I've reviewed but not posted and it's extremely good: https://standardnotes.com
Obsidian is not open source but people think it's because they're so transparent.
Tag nesting = Folders, and yes, it is mentioned on the website: https://standardnotes.com/features , near the bottom of page:
> Nested folders
>
> Create nested folders from your tags with easy drag and drop. Folders also supports Smart Filters, which allow you to build custom queries for viewing and organizing your notes.
Core Plan does not include this feature, nearest is the Plus Plan.
Would you know of any way to sync encrypted data (via Application Passcode) between Standard Notes instances without an account?
The best resource I can find (linked below) indicates that I can't do that, but surely something like Syncthing could make it work?
https://standardnotes.com/help/59/can-i-use-standard-notes-totally-offline
Standard Notes stores keys locally as I understand and it's also possible to host your own instance. It's also a kind of weird argument to not store encrypted data on some companies server because encryption could be cracked somehow somewhere.
Standard Notes have this feature. It's also end-to-end encrypted, opensource, free with a paid plan if you want to support devs and you can also self-host the service if you want.
Those themes require a subscription. You can check out the plans here.
You can also use community-made themes: https://github.com/jonhadfield/awesome-standard-notes#themes
Did you try downloading and installing it using the instructions on: Standard Notes Linux ? Perhaps there is something wrong with the snaps. I would love to help further but i don't have Ubuntu on any machine. If the issue persist after you've tried the installation instructions above, I'll install Ubuntu and try to figure it out.
If it's not Client-Side Encrypted & has Open Source client apps, then any data could be viewed by that company, a company in control of their servers, or anyone else who hacks their servers, whether authorized or unauthorized.
I use Standard Notes personally.
1)- Yes. If you mouse over the informational (i) for the files, you'll see that it applies to stuff like dropbox and google files. The "end to end encryption" under the $0 free plan covers what you normally save, which you are calling notes. You're good. Your notes are encrypted before being backed up to the standard notes server, as mentioned here ( https://standardnotes.com/help/6/i-ve-forgotten-my-password-what-should-i-do ) and other places.
2)- If you trust ProtonDrive, you are probably good. ProtonDrive claims to have the same protection that Standard Notes does- the data is encrypted on your side and sent up only as ciphertext to which the company hosting lacks the key. This is the only thing /u/basicslovakguy got wrong, based on what Protonmail claims about Proton Drive. Proton Drive is not available to Proton's free accounts, it is worth pointing out. I think if you are comfortable storing files on proton drive, that standard notes doesn't offer you much here- it is much more interesting if you are storing things on google drive or dropbox, where by default the cloud provider can fondle every thought you've ever had, sell it to the highest bidder, that sort of thing.
3)- No, exactly as basicslovakguy stated, as a free user you'll be mostly limited to keeping private notes that only you can read.
4)- The plans are clearly delimited as having a dollar sign ($), and you should always assume this means USD unless the website clearly states otherwise or is obviously one of the vastly smaller economies (Canada: 13% of USA GDP; Australia: 6.4% USA GDP, New Zealand 7% GDP, etc). On top of that, several independent states (countries, nations) use the US Dollar as their currency. If it has a dollar sign, it means US Dollars unless you have a good reason to suspect otherwise, like a .ca web address.
You can pay in way more currencies though, including Monero if you wish to be untraecably private.
I had a similar request, but now (due to the new plan rollout?) there seem to be an option to change the email address in your account settings (bottom left user icon > account settings).
On that account settings page there is now an option at the top "Change email".
This option wasn't there before (or I completely missed it).
I now want to change the email of the extended dashboard but I can't to that page, I could do it before the new plan rollout. To get to the extended dashboard I first go to this page:
https://standardnotes.com/help/13/how-do-i-manage-modify-my-extended-subscription
Extended dashboard link but then I get redirected to the homepage.
How do I get to the extended dashboard page?
NOTE: I do all the above through the firefox browser (windows).
Hi u/letzgo1,
For #1, we're aware of the issue and have tested a fix that should be released soon. We're also testing an updated version of Redactor, which is what the Bold Editor is based on.
For #2, that's a pretty strange issue and I'm not sure what's causing it, but you can reset the app completely with the instructions provided here. Please export a set of decrypted and encrypted backups from the desktop app first. Also please make sure that you are running the latest version of the desktop app, just in case it stopped automatically updating.
For #3, which platform do you experience the issue on and which editor is being used when viewing the "locked" note? I haven't been able to reproduce the issue on the mobile and desktop apps yet.
Hi u/Isotrop3, sorry to hear that. Did you use this support article to convert your notes from Apple Notes? Did you import your notes via the mobile apps or the desktop/web app?
>I imported my notes from Apple as per the instructions on SN. I chose the encrypted option.
For what it's worth, when importing notes into the app, the encrypted and decrypted options wouldn't change anything as that affects exported notes.
Can you DM me your email so that way we can can look into the technical details of your account? If you're not comfortable with sharing it via Reddit, please send a message to [email protected] or [email protected] with a link to your comment.
AFAIK, you’d have to use a paid plan in order to be able to use FileSafe - their solution for handling media files in the cloud.
Here’s more info: https://standardnotes.com/help/71/how-do-i-add-images-to-my-notes
I guess 3rd-party extensions can’t have access to FileSafe.
OTPClient is good, Authenticator is another option. If you want something that syncs like Authy, TokenVault on Standard Notes is nice, but not exclusively dedicated to 2FA.
StandardNotes.com open source and zero knowledge, it works in Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and they have a subreddit too, I like that they have extensions and it can be used for lots of other things, like blogging, different skins, 2FA, coding, etc
I did, I actually tried a few when I made the switch: Notable, Standard Notes and Obsidian.
Obsidian was probably the better of the bunch but since I'm already using VSCode for other projects it was a no-brainer when I considered that I didn't to learn new keyboard shortcuts, could continue to use the theme I'm used to, could add good enough Markdown extensions, Git integration etc..
As far as Copilot goes, I've been on the waiting list ever since they announced it :(

oh... That's my main requirement. I'm currently using Standard Notes, which syncs, but it's very limited regarding editor, you don't have any markdown ability, if you don't buy addons.
I created an account on Reddit to share this with you:
https://standardnotes.com/help/42/how-do-i-view-a-list-of-untagged-notes-and-create-other-dynamic-filters
As someone who recently went Extended, I had a similar desire; to have a "workbench" without having to dedicate a tag to it for some "quick and dirty" note taking that I could choose to sort however I choose, later.
!["Untagged", "tags.length", "=", 0]
This will create a view called "Untagged". I treat it as previously described. I'm not sure if this is fitting for your current needs, but hopefully it helps if you didn't already know about smart tags! I was pleasantly suprised to find that functionality.
Hi u/Reasonable-Delay4740, sorry for the (unreasonable) delay. For 3 &5, you'll have to disable the margin resizers in the desktop & web apps.
>I generally minimise 3 & 4 so that they're almost invisible. I minimise all others except for the writing area as much as possible. Is this normal?
Doing so is normal. We offer the No Distraction theme as part of our Extended plans. 🙂
Hi u/Independent_Property, sorry to hear that. Did you import the notes via the mobile or desktop app? Do you recall if there were any notes that were particularly large or lengthy?
If you have Extended activated on your account, you can set up a dynamic filter (via the desktop or web apps) that only displays notes over certain character lengths in the notes list:
!["Long", "text.length", ">", 500]
