From the whitepaper > Because Status Network Token holders will ultimately be using SNT to govern the direction of Status' development, along with its daily use within Status, achieving a fair distribution of tokens is a goal we need to work towards. To achieve this we aim to encourage many smaller participants while discouraging larger participants from taking up the majority of supply.
Right
Yes, most of these things we are well aware of in Canoe. As Tyler writes here, we had super cool aliases working well - but we want to make it better before releaseing that - and we want to sync with the others. Meta data on transactions is somehing I want to add to Canoe (a note about what it was). I am also well aware of WeChat in China doing the same (marrying social and payments) and Status.im is also working in this direction.
Pop in on our discord and help us prioritize and test etc.
That's called https://status.im/ . It's actually working now with a set of nodes that aren't Geth but that team has been pretty consistent that when Geth includes Whisper, they'll move the app over.
Ether is the currency that pays for the fees / gas of the Ethereum infrastructure. So in a sense yes what you buy is a currency, but it is a currency that is used to support tons of contracts / decentralized applications that take advantage of all the features of Ethereum. It's like buying a share of the TC/IP protocol in the early days of the internet. Now while this is certainly hyperbolic the comparison stands, ether is what makes all this possible. Look at projects like Golem, BAT, Status.im etc they all run on ethereum. They may be completely different projects but they all use ethereum as their underlying protocol.
And who said you couldn't buy bread with AMD shares? A currency is just something used as the medium of exchange for goods and services. If you go to your bakery and ask to pay in AMD shares and the guy agrees you just used AMD shares to pay for bread, theoretically anything can be a currency.
Status is actually working on that, built on the Ethereum blockchain. In fact, from that site: >enjoy encrypted messaging by default, using a peer-to-peer protocol that doesn’t rely on centralized servers.
Lol kind of eerie how similar their language is to yours.
A message from the Status.im team that they posted on their messaging app:
>Head-up: Sometime next week(after 2020/01/12) we will be releasing Status V1 RC1 (1st Release Candidate) in to get more eyes on it before the real V1 release. In preparation for that the bridge that connects Discord to Status will be also upgraded to V1. As Beta and V1 are not compatible - they cannot exchange messages - this means messages from Status Beta versions won't show up here anymore. This will most probably happen during the weekend.
Finally!! It's been a long wait for this puppy.
I just spent ETH for a real product.
Realized i was starting to have more and more of my crypto on my https://status.im/ wallet as i tend to play with ethereum while on the phone / couch 10x as often as i pull out the ledger.
So to add a bit more security i went ahead and ordered a https://get.keycard.tech/
Coinbase commerce loaded my wallet app, i picked the wallet i wanted to use and it prefilled the $27 worth of eth and the destination address. Signed the transaction and returned to browser. Interface showed 8 confirmations and order was complete.
from my point of view anything that isn't cold storage is not safe enough for large amounts.
Having said that, the best for your friends is to start small. Position sizing is the most important key here to survive and nobody talks about it.
Start small and interact with the apps. I recommend to everyone by using Toshi in the past and now Status.im. They are the easies way to interact with Decentralized applications from a mobile phone. Besides, they both open the door to easily communicate between you and your friends.
How much to store? as much as what they would bring on their physical wallet. They want to store more? oh then get a cold storage.
The key here is to survive in the long run, starting small is key.
It's worth noting we have every intention on focusing on marketing in the months ahead, but until we have a production release ready this would be a poor allocation of capital.
Status is currently in alpha, and once provide a strong base user-experience we will then put a much greater focus on marketing. Attempting paid user acquisition right now would inevitably result in low retention rates and a cost per active user above industry standard, given there are a number of known bugs we're working to stomp out, and a number of features yet to be implemented.
Right now, we have ~20,000 Users on Android, and 10,000 iOS users and we're only at an Alpha stage (with a total of just under 50,000 people on the mailing list to try the beta). This is predominantly organic, and we haven't utilised any display inventory. The limit on iOS is set by Apple's TestFlight program, and on Android it's self-imposed as we have sufficient user-feedback based on this user pool, and will continue to increase it with each rolling release towards an open beta.
With that said, we understand our communications strategy needs some work - and we will be spending September building out our marketing team (you can see our open positions here https://status.im/open-positions.html), but paid user acquisition on a meaningful scale won't be happening until after security audits and a main-net release. Open to ideas on what you'd like to see more of, and specific parts you feel need improving :)
Ethereum mobile client. You can use Ethereum dapps on your mobile device with Status. It's a lot more than that also, but that's one of the major features. Read the whitepaper to understand more. https://status.im/whitepaper.pdf
Trying to get caught up on the state of hardware wallets for recommendations to friends/family. What do people like? It sounds like the Trezor Model T is popular. The Status Keycard looks interesting but i'm not sure if it works with walletconnect. Metamask or walletconnect support is a minimum requirement - so many solutions seem like they wouldn't connect with much of defi, so are non-starters. Even the Grid Lattice needs to use a metamask fork which is a little annoying. Banana split looks interesting as a potentially more secure way to handle backups.
Bi-Weekly remind that we as early adopters and users of the ethereum ecosystem should be attempting to migrate towards projects like status.im
The biggest question though, how many conveniences are people willing to give up when it comes to things like communication?
SNT intended use according to contribute.status.im:
1. Governance over the Status Client.
2. Username registration over ENS.
3. Community curation and content discovery.
4. A Decentralized Push Notification Market.
5. The Status Teller Network.
6. The Status Sticker Market.
7. The Status DApp Directory.
8. Access to features such as Tribute to Talk.
9. The Status Acquisition Engine (Research).
Theres more detailed explanation in the whitepaper
Directly out of the whitepaper
> 1. The Contribution Period will run for a period of 14 days, or within 24 hours of reaching the first ceiling, of 12M CHF (Swiss Francs) equivalent in ETH, having been reached.
> 2. Status Research & Development Gmbh controls the contract and the address to which gathered ether will be sent (implemented as a multisig address).
> 3. SNT received by Contributors will be transferrable 7 days after the end of the Contribution Period.
What this translates to:
Status will collect 12M CHF worth of ETH (Current Price of $363.79 = 355.09 CHF) That means ~33,795 ETH will be collected at current rates.
Status (obviously) owns the ETH address to which you send your ETH
If you send your ETH, you won't be able to get it back until either 12M CHF have been raised, or 3 weeks from today, whichever comes sooner.
TL;DR: you send me 1 ETH, I'll send you 10,000 units of an IOU. After (up to) 3 weeks, you can trade in your 10.000 IOUs for whatever their value in ETH is.
NO FUCKING THANKS^I'm^not^that^stupid

They have a dynamic ceiling in place to try and prevent a repetetion of the BAT ICO. You can read more about on page 28 in the white paper https://status.im/whitepaper.pdf
Also a blog post is being written soon and going up on blog.status.im that will specify how to contribute and with more details concerning the dynamic ceiling
hey u/spurdosparade you are correct – Status does in fact have a native token (SNT) and uses the ethereum blockchain for the wallet and browser features - enabling crypto payments and access to decentralized applications (rendering those activities inherently public).
However, the messenger is built with a p2p protocol called Waku designed for privacy and removal of centralized choke points.
We appreciate your opinion and concern around projects involved in crypto currencies so we at Status value transparency as a core principle. Check it out and learn more about what we are about and the rigor placed around privacy and security here. The community is always around in Status or Discord to answer any questions you may have about the product and project.
>Where is that app?
Hey man, patience :) The foundations for this are still on development. We're not even on Metropolis and Ethereum is less than a year old!
If there's one app with huge potential I would say it's https://status.im/
Well, it's like a Mist for your phone, but with more focus on instant messaging. This thing is in alpha, and it serves as a platform for other potential killer apps to show up.
In summary, the dev community may or may not be building a killer app right now but they are definitely laying the grounds for them to flourish.
Bi monthly reminder that while SNT has nearly zero tokenmomics...the Status team is building some cool stuff and their mobile wallet/eth browser is actually pretty good coming from someone who does 95% of their crypto stuff on mobile
Check out this public chat on the Status app: https://join.status.im/ethfinance
They also have hardware wallet type of security while on mobile by using their keycard.
Huh. I'm quite surprised Status is actually a working product.
They promised a shitty IM service where Status tokens are needed for messaging, and that's what they delivered. There actually is a real, working IM app, with some crypto bolted to it.
That's more than most ICOs ever did! I appreciate that.
edit: not saying it's a good app! or even secure. But it exists! Which puts it on top of most ICOs
I feel like your getting a lot of flak because essentially this argument boils down to " I/no one wants to download a third party app store." or "you can still download apks", but the point is that its still an issue to have a centralized app store.
This is crypto. We need an app/ Dapp Store equivalent that can provide incentive to moving over. I think just having a dedicated Dapp Store will accomplish this, and then eventually ethereum users will just add normal apps into the Dapp Store. The Dapp Store can be the same decentralized, platform on a blockchain that stores apps to be downloaded. There are likely people already doing this as we speak. maybe Status.im?
Depends, Gab is gaining traction recently. Tommy Robinson set up a Telegram channel when got banned off mainstream social media and even though basically no one in the UK uses it, his channel got tens of thousands to sign up to hear what he has to say.
And if we're talking 10-20 years, the future of the internet is decentralisation so you will have platforms with no central moderation authority that are resistant to government regulation.
The tech already exists right now in beta form. You can go and install Status on your phone right now and have access to the decentralised internet, a decentralised and encrypted chat app, and a cryptocurrency wallet (so, decentralised money).
You can also access the decentralised internet through Brave Browser on desktop and mobile.
If you've watched the show Silicon Valley you probably thought it was a fictional fantasy but no it already exists on the blockchain.
As the government seeks to regulate the internet more and more, it will only drive people to platforms that cannot be regulated. Decentralisation is the future of every part of the internet - websites, apps, communication, financial transactions. And the tech is designed specifically to be impossible to censor or control and to allow anonymity to users.
Really interesting.
You could implement a chat system that uses whisper to send messages, so you have serverless vrchat. You can use Status.im to do that, and keep compatibilty with "no vr chat" where people would only see the text, not "3d position, etc"
https://github.com/status-im/status-js-api
The messages are sent using the regular api, but the positioning and avatars would be set using a protocol message which would only be understood and rendered by the vr clients.

with the whatsapp privacy thing I decided to look at other messengers. I found status.im but it is not on Bitcoin. I wonder if someone could make an equivalent to status using lightning? How could it be architected to save users running a full node + lnd, if they don't want to? I see this example whatsat using lnd. And I see this issue on breez repo requesting a chat mechanism.
I suggest argent if you are a noob and want more safety and mostly interested in a wallet with utility. If you want a full web3 browser i suggest
This is if you are talking mobile. On desktop i still use metamask + a ledger since status desktop is only beta with no browser
Hm, no. It wasn't a status.im page but its own domain. Might've been owned by them, though. A really handsome, clean web3 layout that showed all contract permissions and allowed you to reset them all in one click.
Would you consider https://status.im? They use e2ee and you don’t need a phone number or email to sign up you get a mnemonic phrase like you do with bitcoin but it’s based on the ethereum blockchain you can use it to send money to people directly.
Not a huge fan of ether myself but i like where it’s going. Also has some work to do like enabling phone calls and having notifications in the app which is a basic thing. You can also buy a username with their token SNT. Also open source.

Awesome, definitely worth a look. I'm going to put an afternoon aside to learn about what you're doing here and how it could be utilized on a larger scale, maybe some lessons could be learned for our stuff at Status, we've been looking at ways to make running nodes cheaper / more accessible without long re-sync times etc.
I think you can use Status https://status.im/ . I haven't tried it but its the most advanced so far. Metamask is developing their own and will be released next year. There probably are some others
Hope this is allowed /u/shilling_police ;)

Just want to spread the word. Hope they find a good marketing team :) Status getting adoption could be very big for ETH in general.
It's a mobile client for Ethereum currency / dApps. Status doesn't appear to have many competitors at this stage. It would seem that if Ethereum rises, this would rise as well (no guarantees), with more potential room for growth as it is a smaller market cap.
They are trying to bring Ethereum to the masses. I hope they are successful.
WARNING: DO NOT FOLLOW THIS. THIS IS A SCAM. THE REAL STATUS SITE IS STATUS.IM NOT WHAT OP LINKED. THIS ACCOUNT HAS ONLY BEEN OPEN FOR 7 DAYS AND IS PRETENDING TO BE AFFILIATED WITH STATUS.
>whats the actual theory of how any crypto/ico will become more valuable in time
In general, the tokens associated with an ICO are used/required to do certain things on/for/within the project. If there's demand for what the project enables or creates, and there's a finite amount of tokens that are required to use the project, then those tokens will command a value.
Scarcity + utility = value
Read the Status whitepaper and look at the examples where you see "SNT utility" and those will give you an idea of how the token is used within the Status dapp.
Hey, the idea of messaging-as-a-platform to access other services hasn't really reached the West, but the closest comparison is WeChat. (Status = 'decentralized WeChat').
Here's an introductory post that puts it in simple terms: https://blog.status.im/introducing-status-ethereum-918b1447274 or a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3w5kfVRyao
As for the token functionality, it's explained in detail here: https://status.im/whitepaper.pdf
You know Richard's decentralized internet sounds too similar to Ethereum and some of Ethereum tokens.
There's a network announced on Ethereum few hours ago which is almost exactly the same thing- Status Network. https://blog.status.im/announcing-the-status-network-c6dd18e770e
there are two messenger in the works
Echo (https://my-echo.com/) which leverages BitShares DPOS Blockchain - you can already send 160 char memo via the blockchain and it's no big deal. TX Fees: see steemit.com - it's using the same backend as Bitshares and is a reddit clone on blockchain with 0 tx fees and lots of text storage. works flawless so far
https://status.im/ - runs via Ethereum, I'm not too familiar with their features, but it should be challenging to fight spam there.
I think the best options are gong to be Session and Status.im. I'm also keeping my eyes on the solution from XX Messenger.
Other options aren't going to be as simple, or as reliable...
I don't think Signal is robust nor secure/private enough. Signal is designed to be private between users, but not at the server level; meaning a MIM or government could figure out a person/group. Anonymity is not Signal's goal nor part of their threat model, therefore anonymity is not designed into Signal like other platforms. There's no need to workaround Signal's threat weaknesses with better solutions from platforms that are designed for these threat models.
XMPP comes up a lot. But then you have to add the encryption plugin, and then verify the encryption is actually used. XMPP is not idiot proof, so you or someone could accidentally exchange a non-encrypted message. You also need to go over Tor network, so install that, and configure. Then the XMPP server needs to be reliable/available and not blocked, hacked, or attacked. Other solutions take care this stuff automatically.
I'm glad you are highlighting this issue. I stopped using fetlife when they introduced these privacy eroding measures. Privacy is a big concern for closeted kinksters like me and I don't trust fetlife (or fetster or any other forum) which operates on closed principles, unknown influence with my confidential and personally identifiable information. It is just too big of a risk and not worth the hassle.
That said, it really doesn't help when a major portion of our community is heavily relying on these forums for connecting with like-minded folks. It can be disabling. However, we should act now to find alternatives before giving up our security.
While we don't have one platform to act as hub for everything like with fetlife, we can club together multiple apps to build a kinky utopia. Element, status.im are safe chatting options. Elements even has rooms which can be used for a common feed. But I'd say reddit works for the feed and discovery part. Mastodon is a twitter like federated social media platform where we can share media too. Peertube is great for videos too. Now it takes some work to ensure that our communications and content are private on a federated platform but it is worth it.
Speaking of which, does anyone use Status (https://status.im/). They use keycard (https://keycard.tech/) as a kinda hardware wallet built into the chat app. I like the card idea but dubious about a chat app as a wallet
The only app I could find that currently combines wallets and messaging is Status but does not support Monero but only ETH DAI and their native token SNT
There are other apps being developed but you’ll have to DYOR
https://coincentral.com/top-blockchain-messaging-apps-crypto-messengers/
Yes, blockchain is actually a big part of the backend here and hence deserves a separate title, ergo - core/protocol engineer. But here I include the whole blockchain ecosystem (not only ETH). So backend includes everything other than core dev - SDKs, APIs, etc. Basically think about all companies in the ecosystem like Consensys, Infura, Graph, Status, NEAR, etc. All these have some openings for Software Engineer role. Further, you can check the responsibilities mentioned to get an idea on nature of work.
Job announces are on Twitter, Telegram or teams website. For example you can see our job board at https://status.im/our_team/open_positions.html for: - Nimbus eth2 client - Protocol engineering for decentralized P2P messaging.
You can also find some on more traditional websites like angel.co.
In Eth2, the Ethereum Foundation did drive the consensus and cryptographic spec but there is constant back-and-forth with implementers on the feasibility of it. For serialization and networking its client teams that drove the spec and implementations.
Good point and it's troubling. If this is a no-go for you, best to avoid then. However, do note that this is a major pitfall to these privacy focused apps, you're bound to have characters with extreme views who tend to like hiding or help pitch these kinds of applications.
Thankfully there are other solutions out there including https://status.im as well.
Waku JS & Wallet integrations Lead.
There is a new team forming within Status, a team that will focus on building adoption of Waku M2M (machine to machine) messaging with DApps and wallets.
Building on top of the work of the existing Waku Infrastructure team, this person will undertake a mix of development tasks (create the interfaces, components and tools to facilitate the creation of Waku M2M enabled Wallets and DApps) and developer relations outreach activity (to promote and support Waku M2M messaging with DApp authors and 3rd party wallets).
Status is looking for someone that can define and create the interfaces, libraries, tools, documentation and examples needed to enable the creation of DApps that utilize Waku M2M messaging, and drive the adoption of this functionality with DApp authors and wallets.

>Glad to see this coming along so well
thanks man! considering about 75% of my infra currently depends on https://fountainhead.cash, your support is going to be critical to the success of the platform..
>People have been asking about if it will ever be possible to fuse/shuffle tokens
the short answer is YES!
CashShuffle is a done deal, already have a PoC..
CashFusion is the challenge, and it basically comes down to how successful i am at replacing TOR as the anonymity communications protocol (to something HTTP-based) .. I'm currently favoring OrbitDB's PubSub, but there are other possibilities, eg. Ethereum's Postal Service over Swarm (PSS) https://status.im/research/whisper_pss.html .. so tbh i don't KNOW how it will eventually work, but I'm confident that I'll sort it out 💪
> Will do this.
I have nothing to do with the project
but there is an opportunity to create your own versions of stickers and offer them there both for free and for money.

Check out Status - it’s an ethereum-based implementation of what you’re thinking of but using the Whisper protocol + dApp stuff on Eth. Users generate a wallet and can create and subscribe to different “feeds” or topics which are just public keys. This gives the benefit of allowing private p2p messages because any wallet public key can be a feed/topic, as well as large groups and boards posting to an arbitrary tag.
Fully anonymous + unlimited account creation and the Whisper protocol handles the details of ensuring posting/messaging is anonymous and encrypted. There’s been a lot of work on Ethereum and underlying protocols that can make a real Reddit replacement + everything is open source.
DM me or something if you wanna talk more or collaborate, I’m also a dev.
Limited in what way? Selection of providers, yeah its limited mostly because its quite a new thing and has yet to grow. Availability on multiple OSes, so technically if you feel savvy I believe you can compile a mac/linux/windows client but right now they seem to be targeting mobile development to get a good quality android/ios app.
You can use it whenever you want though, for the Android app you should be able to download it off the playstore but for iOS you need to access their testflight which can be found on their website.
For the holding of the OXT cryptocurrency you can use any wallet really my favorites are MyEthereumWallet and Status.im's messenger(I use this to top up on OXT because it has a builtin web3 browser, wallet and a cool p2p chat system(though it relies on the hosting of waku servers by others/status iirc)). On April 1st 2019 Status took down all of the services which they actively hosted to see how long it would take for the network to recover by having the community try and restart it and it worked):D

Honestly pretty cool stuff if you ask me! I'm interested in what r/privacy thinks of status.im though since I know they are quite harsh when it comes to messengers and what not.
These days it seems all messaging services base themselves on Blockchain (like status.im) and want to bundle a crypto wallet, but I see no use to it. I just want a secure messaging service, ideally not relying on my phone number (or at least with the possibility to change the phone number). Not a crypto walled-messaging service backed by a block chain that make the discovering process harder.
You should look into https://status.im to learn some valuable lessons and takeaways, we've separated much of the protocol into a research team at https://vac.dev.
I'm happy to help give insight to any of that, and also did a more technical view of whatsat on one of my podcasts with Sergio Delgado
Definitely doesn't sound OK, though the most I've heard is them asking for phone numbers or email addresses, not social security numbers or anything of the sort :/
We at DeFi Saver have no KYC of any kind nor do we have plans to put any in place. Perhaps an optional email tied to your Ethereum account for optional notifications, but that's about it. It's an app for interacting with decentralized finance protocols on Ethereum, there's really no need for KYC.
Don't want to be pushy or anything like that, but you can also take a look at other mobile wallets/dapp browser options such as Status.im, Opera, imToken, Trust Wallet or MetaMask Mobile. Most dapps are well optimized for mobile use (ours sure is) and you can always load your wallet seed phrase into a desktop wallet interface.
Or you can use MetaMask Mobile + MetaMask in your desktop browser, or Opera on both mobile and desktop, as these options sync great across devices and allow for quick and easy login when needed.
What is your criticism specifically?
I just posted one of their videos here because it uses Nim.
The speaker works for Status.im (r/StatusIM), which is the #1 sponsor of Nim.
There are a couple of projects related to IOT.
For example at Status (https://status.im/) we focus on mobile devices.
Also a project on mesh networks would be very useful to not rely on centralized internet.&
Otherwise for concrete stuff, maybe buy an Arduino say to measure temperature, and use it as an oracle for an insurance contract on one of Ethereum testnet. You will learn a lot of things and a guarantee you will get a job in an Ethereum startup after or during college.
Nim is a statically typed systems language (can do low level stuff, similar to C++, Rust, Go, D etc...) with Python like syntax and a full featured macro system (think lisp macros).
Who uses it:
Here are the two biggest users atm.
Cloudfast is a service that abstracts away chinese cloud providers like Alibaba, Google Cloud, Azure, IBM, AWS
Status: an Ethereum blockchain client (The main corporate sponsor of Nim).
Nim also has has a small but active amateur game dev community.
Everyone can use telegram with fake virtual numbers! I'm in Iran and doing this since I installed telegram on my machine.
there is also new blockchain chat ecosystem call status.im ! it's secure and heavily encrypted :) this one doesn't need a Phone number and give you anonymity. sorry for my bad English.
As people have said, I think there are ways for people to trace communications if you're using wifi. A good tool to circumvent this would be something like https://status.im/ that hides your communications. It uses a very specific cryptographic scheme to not only secure messages but maintain anonymity unless you want to reveal yourself. You could technically set up a chat room there and quite literally no one can block it.
As for the legal issues, IANAL but there have been plenty of examples of sites that are confession websites. No one seems to care that much, but I think it could be a little hazy if you're in high school.
Agreed! What would be the best place to have them before we have deterministic builds and on f-droid? I’m not a release manager so I don’t deal with this process, I know we have nightly builds that are signed afaik https://status.im/nightly/ but these aren’t always “stable” builds.
But would love to know a better way to have what you’re suggesting, and how we can improve access via other mediums even before f-droid.
That's great! Then you know that I talk about signed stable APKs which should be trivial to produce.
From the Status principles (emphasis added):
>III -Security >We don’t compromise on security when building features. We use state-of-the-art technologies, and research new security methods and technologies to make strong security guarantees.
>VII - Decentralization >We minimize centralization across both the software and the organization itself. In other words, we maximize the number of physical computers composing the network, and maximize the number of individuals who have control over the system(s) we are building.
>VII - Inclusivity >We believe in fair and widespread access to our software, with an emphasis on ease-of-use. This also extends to social inclusivity, permissionless participation, interoperability, and investing in educational efforts.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to check out the whitepaper. It does a pretty thorough job of explaining the overall vision and runs through a handful of planned use-cases.
>The Status Network token is a modular utility token that fuels the Status network. This includes a Decentralized Push Notification Market, Governance of the Status client, Community Curation of content, along with social communication tools such as Tribute to Talk. We also propose a fiat-to-crypto 'Teller Network', DApp Directory, Sticker Market, and demonstrate our research on a User Acquisition Engine to grow the Network.
One use-case that's not mentioned above but is live already in the app is ENS name registrations using SNT under a Status's ENS domain. For example I own noman.stateofus.eth
and if you type that into the Status app you can find me without needing to know my Ethereum address.
Lately a lot more focus is going towards building out the sticker market. There's been a desire to deliver on more of the SNT use-cases outlined in the whitepaper.
Absolutely! It’s using whisper for messaging which is part of the ethereum protocol, and your identity can be tied to an ENS name in status mobile, the desktop version just hasn’t caught up with all the mobile progress yet.

They would need a lot of funding, and that's presumably what they are angling for. status.im have $100M for their open source project. I don't know if that's enough, but it's hard to beat.
Second! ;)
Overall, love the idea as a service. As an investment, not so much.
Will need to read more about the project.
Correct me if I'm wrong but https://status.im project has a similar messaging platform already being built on Ethereum. Status' first-mover advantage stands to cripple Mercury Protocol chances to compete, unless their solution is much more effective or specialized.

Well, it depends on what you mean earn Ethereum, we're working on an Ethereum light client called Status for Android & iOS where you could broadcast hashtags of the services you offer, other people could then find & contact you based on those hashtags.
It also functions similar to a DApp browser (like Mist) so would be pretty straight forward to drop in a faucet as well.
