Not totally roguelikes but more complex than XCOM:
1) Xenonauts
2) UFO: Alien Invasion. That is much better for me than XCOM and Xenonauts. http://ufoai.org/wiki/About
You can call them like-light-roguelites probably.
My List:
Free (as in freedom):
Paid: (basically a list of my most played games on Steam)
There is UFO:Alien Invasion which is an open-source game based off of the original X-COM. It's 3D, and I would say the gameplay is "inspired" by the original. I don't mean that they fucked it up or completely changed it; they cleaned up the interface and mechanics to bring it into the modern day of gaming. Many aspects of the game have been polished considerably. In the old one, it seemed like the goal was "GET LAZORS, WIN GAEM," but they aimed for balance in this new one. There are much more weapons now, too. For example, for bullet-based ammunition, weapon classes include: handgun, sub machine gun, shotgun, assault rifle, sniper rifle (50 cal being a starting weapon), heavy weapons (machine gun), and explosive (includes one of my favourites, the rocket launcher). Some weapon classes have more than one weapon in them. There are also laser-based weapons and plasma-based weapons (maybe other things, too?). I haven't played it a whole bunch, but what I played I liked a lot.
One of the nice things is that in battle you can choose to reserve your SP (is it SP? your movement points) so that you can't use up points set aside for reaction shots. There are many little tweaks and improvements like this in the game.
Overall, very pleased. Even better is that it's open source! Seriously, download it.
I'm told you have to aggressively min-max in this series. I think I experienced the same thing when I was playing open-source clone UFO: Alien Invasion. I was just investigating the game and not playing aggressively and having a hard time winning battles. (Playing it with a trackpad made it considerably more tedious, too.)
I've played many of the Games you mentioned, here are some additional Games I enjoyed that fit your criteria:
There's a spiritual update/remake of X-COM that is completely free called UFO: Alien Invasion ( http://ufoai.org/wiki/index.php/News ). I haven't played it (I still play X-COM!), but it's free and supposedly good, so it might be worth trying out.
ufo:ai it's an open source x-com game loosely a remake of the first ever xcom but upgraded and improved in just about every possible way - not sure if it's finished yet as it's been a while since i last played and you could only get so far in the story but the actual gameplay is brilliant, absolutely the best turn-based close-quarters tactical combat game i've ever played really engaging and great fun. I bet it's absolutely next-level when played 2player
Oh wow this article is shit. Other than Xenonauts, miss, miss miss.
FFTactics Advances is shit, FFTactics was brilliant and only the PS1 or PSP versions are worth looking at, still very unlike XCOM though.
I am not even going past the first page, here's the correct answer;
yah, possibly be the first game i buy in over a decade too... due to open source addiction - oad, tremulous, wesnoth, the open source X-com remake ufoAI - why would i need to buy anything else? - If anyone hasn't played it then it's really good great graphics and a really interesting game engine. afaik it's not finished yet, last time i played you could get about 70% through before the content run out but they've been working constantly so i'll probably reinstall and have another go.
best thing about Xcom 2 is - XCOM 2 is PC-exclusive video game - games for people to play sitting at a desk, propar games. and it's available on linux :D
Hi, i'm another user who want ufo:ai, i really can submit it because my computer die. And i'm not going to have another until the next year.
However, UFOAI can't be packaged on fedora
> Why is this package not included in Fedora? UFO:AI cannot be included in Fedora because of the licensing policy. Fedora is very strict in this case. Unfortunately, not all the data used in UFO:AI have clear and acceptable licenses, so that they would comply with the Fedora policy. RPM Fusion dares to redistribute the game in a good faith that it is not against the will of the authors of the data.
But you can submit it to the RPM Fusion Non Free repository, you can start here.
Or
You can have faith on me and wait about six months. :)
Or
You can use this unnoficial repo.
Star Conflict, it's a very fun mmo space combat game. You can find it on steam.
0 A.D. is also good. If you like the good old Age of Empire, you can't miss this.
Xonotic is a quake-like fps, fast-paced and fun.
OpenTTD, it's a transport simulation game. Despite looking old it's quite addictive.
UFO: Alien Invasion. It's a classic X-COM like game. Try it if you like turn-based squad battle.
Also, check PlayDeb for loads of free games if you're running ubuntu.
And for a refreshed retro experience i recommend UFO: Alien Invasion. Open source, free and really open. And apparently the last big update happened not 2 weeks ago. Time to replay that one myself. Plus: linux!
There's a lesser known open source 3D version called UFO: Alien Invasion. Very fun and deep, same XCOM feel/interface, and they're still constantly developing it over 7 years. Check it out.
I might be a bit late but... VIDEOGAMES!!! Seriously, there are plenty of free games out there, some are really good too!
Just a few worth checking out: http://www.wesnoth.org/ - Turn based strategy game, with an awesome community, lots of add-ons so you can really play with a lot of different races. http://ufoai.org/ Supposed to be like XCOM, I wouldn't know as I've never played XCOM, but it's a 3D turn based game where you got a team of guys to fight aliens on different locations, it's great fun.
There are many others like Team Fortress, League of Legends, etc etc, seriously I got a lot of games that I payed for, but if you're a cheap bastard you can still enjoy a lot of games for free and legally.
There is a great freeware clone which includes all of the significant elements that make this series a great series. It doesn't look too bad either and is still being enhanced and upgraded despite being a few years old.
So if you want to get a glimpse without having to pay i highly recommend this.
