Genette is no stranger to irrational behavior; he shows just how volatile he is every time he opens his mouth.
Here's some of my favorite Genette moments:
-Threatening to punish mbl for using the word "fag"
-Threatening to ban me for having a voobly username too similar to another player
-Kicking robo from his clan and making random hate-filled posts on aoczone in the dead of the night during some sort of drunken fit
-Genuinely thought that KGB was better than SY in the WIC tournament (he helped fix the tournament for a Tyrant vs Tyrant finale)
I'm sure there's at least a dozen other instances where he's made a complete ass of himself. I think the HD community in particular is familiar with his posts on steam forums
But don't worry about memb being unable to cast scheduled games, I'm sure Genette can fill in just fine -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnNaWXDuTE&feature=youtu.be&t=12m50s
Edit:
By the way, Genette did it purely for personal reasons and nothing more. http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/279/Vooblys-Staff-Tree
Genette falls under "Game Management" in the staff tree
Game Management Overview - Voobly Leads involved with the addition of new games and maps on Voobly. Creation and upkeep of scenarios, ladders, lobbies and leagues.
Game Moderators Overview: - Members of staff who assist and regulate our players using our gaming services.
Obviously, if someone were to ban Memb, for a good reason or a bad reason, it should be done by a Game Moderator. Genette has referred to Memb negatively as a "thief," which I find kind of strange as if you were to hear his political views, it would be evident that he has absolutely no problem with thievery. The truth of the matter is that Genette has a vendetta against Memb and just wanted to get back at him.
Not bad, but there are greater legends of history like Akropolis. As far as I know, the first and only person to achieve a negative rating without point trading.
And steam isn't even where the competitive AoE2 players are. Voobly is where the competitive scene for the game is since HD Edition has a some major problems.
I was hoping for some buff for Teutons. Either
Also, since ZE's Balance Tweaker and CarlosFerdinand's Balance Patch had merged, I had thought more of their changes would be implemented. (for reference here is BP, here is BT.) Particularly increasing the price of the Crossbow upgrade, and reducing the price of Squires / Husbandry / Tracking / Hand Cart.
But I can live without it! Changes look good. I particularly like how Towers are more likely to be used, as well as infantry (with arson), as well as the improvements to the "Three Is".
Here it is.

It's not exactly what appear in the video, but serves the same purpose.
The video was made by the person who asked for Petard recoloring. Long time seen this epic video.

The Elite Petard is better, obviously. Jokes aside: The basic one is just good for getting through walls on arena when you're playing a castle unit civ.
If you didn't know - there's a (voobly) mod the allows you to upgrade the Petard (and some other fun stuff for casual games between friends) http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/811/Community-Games-Mod-V2
Voobly Balance Patch is fixing the game's long-standing bugs and attempts to correct some of the most problematic imbalances in the game that make it less fun to play (like Bolt on starting Ulfsark for Norse, strength of Shifting Sands, and much more). It also aims to make the maps more balanced to avoid victories based solely on the map spawn being strongly advantageous for one player, and introduces some new maps altogether.
The list of changes is on the mod's page, currently the latest version is 1.03, which includes changes from the previous versions as well (1.02, 1.01).
The action's over at Voobly these days. It looks a lot like the Zone (complete with advertising spam) and there are 1000+ people in the AoE2 lobbies right now.
With the Userpatch 1.5 Beta being available on Voobly now (http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/270415), it's a great time to move into a public beta testing phase with WololoKingdoms as well!
Most information you should need on running the installer are on the Github page. Make sure that you've installed the 1.5 beta patch, and select it as the patch in the game room settings.
Especially some of the new maps might still have issues, as I can't possible test all of them :P I'm happy to hear any feedback you might have!
I don't have experience with RoN, but with AoE2 and AoM they did a very poor job and the releases were very buggy, mainly concerning the multiplayer :-/ But tbh who knows how much fault is really at Skybox Labs and how much actually on Microsoft's project planning...
But with that said, AoE2 HD has been patched over the year to remove most of the bugs, it got a new expansion, so afaik it's playable okay now. AoMEE has also been patched somehow, single player is mostly okay to my knowledge, but multiplayer is still very problematic with stuttering and lagging for many people (for many it runs fine though, I'm one of them, maybe you would be as well?) Actually some days ago the rated games feature broke and you currently cannot play any rated games on AoMEE :-/ Maybe after a year it'll be fine the same as AoE2 HD? :-)
Simply if you're looking for a single player experience and exceed the required computer specifications by some measure, I think you'll be content with what you get. If you're in it for the multiplayer though, I'm not so sure, you might try sticking with the originals and play through Voobly - more players and activity on both games. (Also a higher level of play there, Steam is more casual.)
There is! Direct IP still works, you can play on GameRanger, but I highly recommend Voobly for playing SWGB and Age of Empires II online. Age of Empires II plays much better on Voobly than it does with Steam.
He hasn't played any warm up games yet under his main account. He Hasn't been online since 9th September 2016. I'm going to be watching that page <strong>Bookmark it now!</strong> like a hawk.
You'll need to log in to your Voobly account (or create a Voobly acocunt) in order to see this page.
This, as far as I am aware is THE page to look at. It also shows each players win/loss streak.
Ratings are pretty fickle though. Slam was struggling last week and lost a few games and dropped out of the top 10. This morning his beat Nicov 6-0 and is now back to 4th in the rankings. It's not linked to skill so much as activity level.
Outside of what's displayed on this page, the only other measures worth looking at is current/past tournament performance or the highest rating they've ever achieved.
Hi nogaym,
Please host a game room and launch AoC in single player via Voobly. In the game menu, either select "Single Player" or "Options" and create a player profile (i.e. enter a player name). After this, you should be able to store your hotkeys permanently. Please keep in mind: You can always use our tech support chat or the support forums.
f you play on Voobly the amount of points won/lost in teamgames is increased to help people climb/fall through the ranks, and also it DOES take individual players ratings into account. Some people on the team can gain 7 points, while other gain 9.
Example game http://www.voobly.com/match/view/16893604
The highest rated winning player gained 7points and highest rated losing player lost 9 points, while the Lowset rated Winner gained 9 and lowest loser lost only 6.
Edit: Also the "pro" player making a smurf wont start at 1200 as they won't be able to access the New Player Lobby

Using the Ak patch (https://github.com/Tails8521/WololoKingdoms) on the AK lobby (http://www.voobly.com/games/lobby/479) means you have everything as is from AK, except for: Feitoras don't work, Siege towers don't work, and the 2 berber unique techs have been changed, Kasbah must be researched by players on the team individually, it's price has been reduced (250->150 food and gold) Maghrabi Camels gives their camels +1 melee armor and +5hp instead of the regen.
Hello mate :)
That problem can not be fixed. It is because you have a bad intel graphic card which steam and the game do not support. my guess would that you have a dual core pc or lower right ? However there is something that might make game run for you: Go to your game library and right click age of empires 2 HD > Properties > select the following option: http://prntscr.com/9i9bz8
Suggestion: You probably want to play multiplayer I am assuming? You can patch your hd game to work with 'voobly' (The biggest community of age of empires 2 multiplayer) Just install this patch: http://www.aoccs.net/aochd/ and you are ready to go.
Voobly also provides a workshop just like steam and even better: http://www.voobly.com/games/view/Age-of-Empires-II-The-Conquerors/Game-Mods/gamemods/browse2/13/1

Thanks for posting this great news, and appreciate the Chivalry team for their great work.
I made the Age of Chivalry able to play at Voobly:
(you not even have to install the .exe and overwriting your original files, since it is running as game mod)
I NOT take any credits for this!
Play Age of Chivalry online or single player on Voobly
If you have the steam's HD version you still can play with this mod by the compatible patch.
If you still have the original, you might want to give a try to Voobly - a lot more active players of different skill levels and various types of games hosted. I think you might have a better chance of finding more suitable opponents there.
When Christmas Sale kicks in and then when the expansion is released, population on Steam should be much better than now, question is for how long though :-)
Original Titans work on Win 7 no problem, and you can play multiplayer through Voobly - it's more alive than Steam, and it's the place where competitive play including tournaments happens (but not just that, players of all skill levels are there).
So far the original Titans are the better version, as XLightningStormL pointed out, multiplayer on Steam is problematic (single player is okay), but they're slowly working on it, there should be another patch later this month aiming to help with some of the problems.
You kept talking in plural. Who are working on this one? Is carlosferdinand involved? http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/151/AOC-Balance-Patch He is doing a great job, with balancing - and organizing tournaments with the patch. The arabia contest was already played with the balance patch and another event is in the making. So there was/is a movement from devs, even if not the original devs.
Install the UserPatch from http://userpatch.aiscripters.net/ or install Voobly from http://www.voobly.com/ which automatically installs the UserPatch for you and allows you to find other people to play with online.
You can download Rome Returns from Voobly:

It's a guy who made a patch for the game and has had 3-4 1v1 tournaments over the last 5 years.
Here is a list of his current changes
This Voobly Mod is similar. It triples every tech and civ bonus for each individual civ. That's everything from Fletching to Wheelbarrow.
Things get crazy pretty fast.
There are some interesting ramifications to it, actually. Britons for instance are kind of weak because their missiles at maximum range take so long to reach the target.
Pussywood (small trees) originally existed on the conquerors and it is also available on steam workshop. If you are planning to play on Voobly, here is the patch: http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/20/Small-Trees . And this for the hd version on steam: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=549369672
Perhaps your driver had some "features" which was not tolerated by the anti-cheat system. You can speak with admins at here if you are sure it was a fail detect.
Incan EEW should have a niche that is unique to their EEW. One thing I've thought of is making it so that Couriers gives an attack bonus vs economy units (villagers+trade carts) to their EEW kamas and slings. It would make them exellent raiders combined with the speedboost. Their EEW would lack offensive stats but they would make up for it by their raiding ability. The bonus would make it so that they kill a vil with loom in one less hit than an aztec EEW (and they would be able to outrun tradecarts). Also I'd give them thumb ring and maybe architecture?
I think the indian villager bonus should be buffed so they can make more use of it earlier and maybe can up a vil earlier. It wouldn't be OP that they would reach castle sooner since they get no kts. Perhaps give them a free fortified walls tech? Boost the AP of the EleA? I think it's hard to balance them. Italians i dunno, perhaps increasing their age bonus? http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/312/Forgotten-Empires-31
They are being addressed in the Voobly Balance Patch - give it a shot, it's quite well received and new version correcting further problems is already being worked upon.
How can you say this? What numbers are you looking at? I cannot say either way, but I actually bet HD is bigger, there's just no published numbers to compare.
According to http://aoe2.net there were 105,000 players in Dec 2014, 116,556 in January 2015, 78,699 in February.
You compare this with what Voobly published in January: http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/211645
We can assume 'well over 50,000+' compared to 105,000 in December 2014 means they are about equal, If Voobly hit 100,000 I bet they would have said that as thats a big milestone, so I'd GUESS it is somewhere between 50-100k in December, which would put HD at a few more unique players per month... Now maybe a voobly player plays twice as long as an HD player, or the other way around, so this number alone doesn't really say anything. Maybe people just watch games on voobly, or login but don't play, making HD more active as far as games played, or maybe HD players join but don't play, etc. etc.... Still not going to get number that you can directly compare.
What I can say, is there are quite a few players on both.
If you do end up giving Voobly a try, as mentioned below it is a good idea to start in the New player lobby http://www.voobly.com/games/lobby/251 Rating range from 1100 to 1400 max ELO.
If however you are feeling brave then maybe the Medieval Siege lobby is for you : http://www.voobly.com/games/lobby/64 Rating here go up to 2400+ ELO
Where you decide to play, remember the most important thing with AOE2 is to be with friends.
On Voobly if you get stuck, at the top of every lobby you have a tool bar. Look for the ?? Live Help or alternatively a RED named person ( Voobly Staff ) they are all there to help.
Anyway good luck and have fun
There is a very active competitive community at
This uses the original version of AOC with some patches which are automatically installed. You can also play more casually on voobly in the New Player Lobby.
You can play casually on steam also, although the Steam client is quite a way behind voobly in terms of features.
And it's all about 21 pop scouts now man ;)
Thanks for the reassurance, Helen. I would however like to point out that what you're saying about pushing out these patches taking time is misleading at best. I have made patches the size of 1.9 before (no source code changes though, so can't accurately say anything about that), and the coding part took less than a full day to complete. Another 4-5 days of QA testing with a small team.
Why it takes Skybox 2 months to get from the previous version to 1.9 is because it's a company of only 40 employees, as their website suggest, and the fact that they are taking on so many projects at once, and simply don't have the time to prioritize AoM. If it was Blizzard or something big making a mistake in a patch, it would be corrected within days, while we have to wait a month or more.
I'm not trying to be negative about this, but this is the harsh reality that we all have to accept and be patient about.

Everyone should play Age of Empires 2 : The Conquerors, I feel that AoE2 is such a great game and experience. While I did get around 2k rating on the ladder a long time ago, I feel that the experience of playing Black Forest and Michi maps is great :D, from playing Nomad mode to King of the Hill or Castle Blood! This is the game that taught me how to macro, which I now use on StarCraft II. 2 hour games or longer in the middle of the night is always great! People, please join us old-timers in enjoy this great game.

It is a voobly mod called Sectator Overlay, most likely. Some (EG VODs) on HD also has a cheat-tool that has been community-limited to casters which is not available to the public because it can be used as a cheating tool in live games. So, if you want such a feature (you do want to use it, believe me) you need to use Voobly. Using Voobly with an HD installation and/or Expansions has a guide here, which is very extensive so just take a look at that guide.
For spectating there's the spec overlay and the dashboard. Ingame I'm not sure if there is any, but you can click on that green leaf thing (diplomacy tab) on the top right corner of the image.
New features compared to Sheep vs Wolf 1:
(this mod only works on Voobly)
i would normally only do 25+2 if i had deer and i didn't plan on going more than 3tc. but presuming you do you can get a really fast imp time. here is me doing 25+2 and 3tc with vik: http://www.voobly.com/match/view/13157844
but with civs that have no eco bonuses it can be more awkward, and better to go up 27+2
Hi, as it's not easy to determine the cause of the issue with the given information, please create a new thread on our technical support forum. If you can, please join alternatively the Live Chat Help.
Some thoughts on your points:
1.) Once Voobly is installed, all the updates should be automatic -- hopefully only taking 20-30 seconds on a machine with a fast connection. The only update that isn't automatic is the age2h compat patch if you have steam version of the game... eventually we launch the compat installer automatically.
2.) Hotkeys as others have noted are the game's defaults. I thought even on steam, they kept the regular 1.0c hotkeys other than AoF ?
3.) For port forwarding, 90%+ of the players don't need to port forward, the only ones that do have special types of routers and if we didn't ask folks to port forward we'd have to proxy/relay which would lag and any client that doesn't prompt for explicit port forwarding when required would likely perform worse (albeit easier to set up initially).
We're continuing to improve on usability though and reducing steps to get started (e.g.: http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/213315 ). What other defaults did you have trouble with? Can you list specific steps you think could've been automatic?
AOE is as active as never before. Records have been recently set for the conquerors as well as for HD edition
As for why there aren't any rooms: are you sure you are not searching for the forgotten? When I first got the game I couldn't figure out how to switch between HD and forgottend for quite a while.
Details on the Voobly updates for AoE and RoR are at http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/aoehd . The updates are focused on improvements benefiting multiplayer while keeping the balance the same as the original.
Ok, so it's coincidence your account got created when tocaraca got banned for the first time and remained inactive until tocaraca got banned again?
And it's also a coincidence that your voobly account played games on the days that tocaraca didn't play any games? Then when tocaraca started playing again your account got inactive.
Also you said in your game against Redeagl that he also made a new account, implying that this isn't your main account.
And it's also a coincidence that both of you don't like towers and type 11 all the time in the game chat?
A bit too much of a coincidence imo, but maybe you can explain why
My opinion on wonder victories improved dramatically after it allowed me to beat Joadn in a viewer game yesterday... :D It was 8 players FFA, and I was very lucky to survive until being able to build the wonders (yep, 2 of them were needed). IIRC, a total of 5 wonders were destroyed in the process... At first, nobody thought about wonders at all, until Jordan started to build his. I immediately started to build a counter wonder, being able to finish it slightly before him, about 2 years ahead. Tense moments there. :D Needless to say, I wasn't able to defend properly and we reached a point where all existing wonders were destroyed. I then went for the second wonder and that did it. So that's just to give a counter example that wonders can be quite entertaining (especially when not expected at first) and don't have to be lame.
Check out Jordan's stream, it was good fun: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/206700830?t=02h48m05s Voobly: http://www.voobly.com/match/view/16824438/Match-Details
Nah this seems to be normal. His true rate might be in the middle of that. He may have played some lower rated guy and would have won a few games and so his ratings shot up. Then he may have had an encounter with a smurf and might have lost 4-5 games a bad day and this happens. Nothing to be too suspicious about. http://www.voobly.com/profile/view/124452938/Ratings Check mine for example or for this guy, you will see he jumped up 150 points and then dropped back to 1600 http://www.voobly.com/profile/view/124554200/Ratings
LOL! I am sorry! I wasn't clear about the Smush. It is an advanced Meta for Advanced players. Today, you failed at executing it. It is no big deal! No beginner can ever learn overnight!
Mastering Smush requires a high amount of attention and multitasking. If you get distracted for 2 seconds all your monks may suddenly die to few scouts and it's game.
So What I would advise you doing instead is to try a super basic build order (Archers Flush as suggested by henkDeSuperNerd) to become impulsive. You need not thinking about luring a boar, distributing villagers to resources, building a barrack, etc. All these should become an instinct. At this point, you will be ready to execute advanced Metas.
Archers Build Order illustrated
https://imgur.com/gallery/fXVmYZ8
How to improve your multitasking faster?
Basically, play versus the easiest computer BUT do not attack it just try to practice your build order and click feudal earlier. When you fail at finding a boar, sheep, or late feudal click. Use Marco/Polo cheat to see where were your unfound resources. Then Start a completely new game. 5 - 10 games a day of build order practice And within a week. You will be shocked with the results.
Another helpful post reply: http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/232201
A very strong Taiwanese player. 2k2+ voobly rated. 1
From what I know he has a lot of HD experience as well - a lot more than some of the other players. He's hosted/casted a tournament for the Taiwanese community on HD recently for example aside from playing.
If you have Voobly, you could learn what the pros do by watching recorded games from the Gladiators of the Arena 2v2 arena tournament that was held earlier this year.
<strong>Recorded games on AOC Zone</strong>
You will need to install the Gladiators of the Arena mod to make sure the recorded games run properly. It will take you mere seconds to do so.
<strong>Click here for the Mod</strong>
I would recommend watching recs from either Miguel (teamed up with Edie and eventually won the tournament) or from Lojza (teamed up with Terror and was knocked out earlier).
Miguel and Lojza are the two best boomers on Arena. It's their preferred playing style. A careful study of these recs will teach you everything you need to know. They might even help you re-learn stuff you think you already know. I'm going through Lojza's recs again at the moment.
If you install Voobly and own the HD edition, it will install a compatibility patch that let's you play the original game. So if you have some people who own only the original game and some who own only the HD edition, you can all still play on the same version without needing to buy anything else.
I think its a common problem for people with the compatability patch, be sure to contact the tech support on voobly about this. Either here http://www.voobly.com/forum/view/33241 or the guys labeled under tech supported in the respective lobbies.
From the site:
> Just recently we started the most definitive pack for aoc dm recorded games led by our super bad ass mr christ.
This is his profile. He is pretty active on Voobly these days.
[Quendi]True has been trying to revive DM for a couple years now aswell.
I might be alone here in the lot, but honestly I have completely opposite opinion (I know I am gonna be bullied by the Voobly fan boys!). I have played HD now almost for 2 years and I often play 4v4 BF games (so u can expect late game with 300 pop). A few months back I tried voobly, first I played 1v1 to increase my rating to reach Medieval siege lobby. It was all good. But, as soon as I reached Medieval siege, I tried playing 4v4 and it was a nightmare. The game was lagging so much. N then there were players dropping all the time. I kept ignoring it until, on one day I couldn't play a single match, ALL the matches ended up in players being dropped. So, I finally switched back to HD and at least I do manage to play a match or two when I like to.
To avoid issues in HD, just limit the players to ur geographic region and it should be just fine.
Just in case, here is my voobly profile. Apparently, voobly doesn't store the dropped and desyced games, but I guess I should have the games stored on my PC to prove the point. http://www.voobly.com/profile/view/124602618/Matches/games/matches/user/124602618/0/0#pagebrowser1
Good point, it's better you view them for yourself.
Here is the Voobly Mods section.
Here is the SteamWorkshop
Fair enough I missed the part at 8-11 mins, although he is not wrong.
The rest of it is just you being cocky again. The trush didn't appear to do much damage, he hit castle age at the same point as the trusher. When res checked his base he didn't seem to be under threat. Similar with the monks, didn't appear to be causing any pressure. Not really a ragequit, he was mostly fine. People don't ragequit community games either.
>no knights/huskarls to back up
Yes because he needed to mass up units to fight the monks, it didn't matter though since his flank had disconnected.
> I understand that res was going for a fast castle build order and for fun, but his getting mad at the noobs who beat him afterwards is just silly.
He's pocket in a team game.....that's what you do. He wasn't raging after the game either, he just moved onto the next game.
Maybe don't be an asshole in twitch chat next time. Telling people they micro badly is an insult.
>This is not 2K rated play or losing with dignity. He straight up got outplayed and raged about it.
He's playing in a low rated TG on stream for fun, there is no point in him tryharding because it wouldn't be fun for the people playing to get crushed and wouldn't make good content to upload. Do I really need to explain this?
Again he wasn't mad. You're a cocky asshole for insulting people after winning. It's his channel, his rules, he reserves the right to ban you if he thinks you're an ass.
I've never had much luck with that guide: I've successfully used this one on my Linux machine: http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/217821. I think your best change of success is by installing Wine via Brew and starting the Voobly installer with the terminal command "wine voobly.exe", but iirc the DirectPlay installer for Brew is down at the moment, so you'll need to find it somewhere else. I'll try to install Voobly on my Mac tonight, but I've never had much luck with DirectPlay and Wine-Staging on that OS.
Have you tried Rome Returns mod? It's not a 100% aoe1, but you can try it in aoe2.

The guide:
If you are using the compability patch to play on voobly, this is what you need to do:
Install this HD-Hotkeys mod: http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/350/HD-Hotkeys
Find your existing hotkeys (or make some from this website: https://aokhotkeys.appspot.com/) from this folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\profiles its the file called player1.hki
Copy that file, and paste it into this folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\Voobly Mods\AOC\Local Mods\HD Hotkeys
The hd-hotkeys mod creates this folder and then you put your personal hotkeys into this folder and then the game just seems to accept overlapping hotkeys.
You can try some fun test with Rome Returns mod, but not all units will be available as replacement. Also you can't do ingame civ comparing, because civs also got replaced, not as added new. You can check stats and texts, but not a real Egyptian vs Turks battle.
Watching just numbers, imo aoe1 civs could stand up vs aoe2 civs in eco and endgame too.
I just explained why it was made that way. Do not confuse that with justification though. :)
For clarification, what I mean is that Mangudai were not OP with 0 delay in AoK - they were actually somewhat like a fast firing raiding unit, but could actually be countered by skirm. When the AoC expansion came out with new techs and much better trade, Mangudai got way too many boosts.
So yes, the nerfs applied are very appropriate.
> And in the patch 4.9 for the HD Edition it was changed: https://imgur.com/a/q4aTS
Yes, the devs get a lot of their ideas from other places. Those changes came from Carlos' patch originally. http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/151/AOC-Balance-Patch

You should be careful about the wishful comparison with AoEIIHD, as those games are miles apart in everything regarding community interest, and that also reflects in the devs' interest, as it directly relates to their ability to get money out of it (compare the 2 high-quality (content-wise) DLCs for AoC and the subpar 1 for AoM). It's just ironic that the lack of interest is largely caused by their own failure to deliver a respectable product - EE did have a clear path laid in front of it to truly become the lead platform, and I think most of us were hoping it would come true as the current options are not near ideal, it even did have quite interesting initial numbers, but...
Tbh the only platform that cares about the game experience currently is Voobly that does prepare balance patches, fun mods and ladders for them like AoMT Hybrid (AoT with some key AoM rules), maintains ladders and does provide actual player support and moderation (so e.g. dealing with cheaters and game problems). And you have (probably almost, there's something at EE lately I've noticed) all the tournaments played there (for the said reasons).
(Btw maybe it's about getting used to it or something, but from my experience and also from what I've gleaned from a significant part of the multiplayer community, the Steam community features are actually part of the reason why the multiplayer experience is lacking - even the 12-year old ESO was an awesome platform for player communication compared to it...)
The start rates are there to separate players from different skill levels. New player lobby has a starting rate of 1200 because that is approximately how strong an average player in NPL would be when playing in the MS lobby. I'm pretty sure you start with 1600 rating in medieval siege, you might want to double check it.
There are different ladders. In NPL you have two ladders for all players in NPL, called RM:beginners and DM: Beginners. In medieval siege you have separate ratings for team games and 1v1s for RM as well as DM.
The intermediate lobby has unfortunately been cancelled (too few players), but you can play on the RM-Intermediate ladder in the medieval siege lobby. You have to host a game, on the box next to 'rated game' you can find a number of different ladders.
For the hotkey part I think you have to check this http://aokhotkeys.appspot.com/editor , or if you want to have exactly the same hotkeys as aoe2 HD default you can use this: http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/350/HD-Hotkeys
And to watch old recs you can host a room (in any lobby, it doesnt matter), press settings, press 'watch recording' and then tick 'load recorded game'. this way you can watch .mgx files
Incase you don't know, Voobly has a wonderful tech support team :)

Log into the client and go to the General Chat lobby ----> Voobly Help Room
Since you already have the CDs, if you want to play with them, then I suggest that you download the Userpatch. This will give you access to lots of bug fixes and new features. If you want to play online, then you should use the Voobly client. It is completely possible for you to play the game that you already have without needing to buy it again on Steam.
However, if you do want access to the new expansions, then you will have to purchase the game on Steam and also purchase the other expansions. In addition to the base HD edition (which includes the Age of Kings and the Conquerors), there are three DLC expansions: The Forgotten, The African Kingdoms, and the Rise of the Rajas (to be released Dec 19th).
And if you have the Steam edition and are interested in playing online, then I would still recommend that you set up Voobly using your original CDs. Then you will be able to play with people on both communities, using either Voobly or the Steam in game lobby system.
ZeroEmpires has a video on the differences between Voobly and Steam if you want to find out more about each platform.
If you just want the normal HD hotkeys, there's a voobly mod for that: http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/350/HD-Hotkeys
If you want custom ones: https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/4fe2pw/how_to_port_your_custom_hotkeys_to_voobly/
Pretty sure it was made by or at least uploaded by Rambit. It's hosted on the same server as http://rambit.org/ at least, perhaps the email address on there works. Otherwise, whois information of that domain lists an email address that might be worth a shot.
The answer is simply no unfortunately. Things that display this are all for spectators only and not in game. The spectator dashboard and overlay (voobly only) allow you to see idle vill counts as well as researches etc and much more. However this is unavailable in game as a player for obvious reasons.
One thing that you can use in game on voobly which is interesting is the "idle vill pointer" which turns your idle vills to exclamation marks which makes them more visible. Not exactly what you were saying but that's the only in game idle mod I am aware of.
Definitely you can! By running the game from
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Age2HD\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe
OR
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Age2HD\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe
-Another way is to run the game through voobly like this: http://www.voobly.com/files/view/17398983/upzp8a4b8s3m683qepghg8tg0ucjzo2s/Zq3fCE.jpg (tick that within the game room and hit launch) an example of it in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N__YJ_6WppA
You don't need to copy anything extra from your CDs, you just need a nocd crack - don't have any link handy (maybe someone else does?), but you can play without a CD simply through Voobly, that installs it automatically (and is also a pretty good place to play online).

Is a huge list of most custom scenarios.
Your guess doesn't show up, but do you actually want to that specific map back? Many likewise maps, most using archers lines instead of infantry line.
Map features:
Map details, Guide and Download link
(this map only playable at the Voobly)
Assuming the new monitor's resolution is the same as the old one:
Everything will be 26.32% larger.
the math: (24-19)/19=0.2632
Just compare 100% zoom to 125% zoom on a standard 1080p screenshot to see the approximate size. Browser zoom hotkey is (ctrl and +/-).
Unless the new monitor is of a higher resolution than the old one, you could consider pulling your current monitor closer to your face. This will achieve the same effect as a larger monitor (if you pulled it in ~25% closer).
Atty and weak? Well Gaia okay, Kronos not top tier, but has his uses, so I wouldn't say altogether bad, and Oranos, well, that's hands down top tier.
Atties should try to win in early-mid game, where they're really strong (great raiding ability combined with easy eco management), and avoid late game, where they're weaker. From what I've heard and read some boost to lategame could be useful (especially considering match-ups with top tiers like Zeus/Isis), but I'm not sure how much to not make them universally op, probably not much.
The idea about moving units out of Palaces seems interesting though, after all, you build eg Myrmidons at Fortresses and Barracks, too...
Btw I think the complaints I heard are more about eco being weaker than anything else - some Atty expert should specify here :-)
>I wonder what it would take to make an AoM fan balance patch fix various different inconsistencies between the cultures, as well as introduce new, never before seen mechanics into the game?
A lot :-) There have been numerous attempts at balance changes, a lot of them done by experts like TheMista and others, and they all failed to be accepted.
Right now Voobly has a balance patch that's aiming to take it very slow in balance department (which seems to go down better with people), but still removes a lot of real bugs - this approach seems to work so far, so hopefully the work will continue there.
Voobly automatically installs a no-CD patch as part of its anti-exploit measures. If you want to play online you'll have to install Voobly anyway (unless you're playing AoM:EE), so it might be easiest to just install it.
While we're at it, if anyone want to play this game online but doesnt feel like purchasing it on steam (you should!) you can go over to Voobly and play on their platform. It's pretty good to be honest. You can create/join a game and play against other people with almost no wait time.
I have the game on steam but I still use Voobly to play due to their mod/plugin support and overral better game.
Game mods are supported on Voobly and it is actually integrated with the client. The host of a game actually can select which mod the game will use and then when other players join the game room, they will be prompted to install the mod if they do not already have it.
Here is the Custom Mods forum on Voobly
Here is a quick tutorial on how to host a mod on Voobly
Forgotten Empires will be 100% supported by Voobly. The widescreen at Voobly is also integrated with the client, but to use widescreen in a rated match you need to be a premium member - widescreen is free for all to use in non-rated matches. Explanation of widescreen on Voobly. I personally donated the money to pay the developer to integrate widescreen into Vooblys client and anticheat patches.
Another cool feature that a lot of streamers use is windowed mode which renders in 32-bit color...I think you could use the windowed mode to play on two monitors, but I'm not sure about the resolution. Another solution for multiple monitors might be some 3rd party software which forces your graphics card to merge multiple monitors into one. Then widescreen would probably work on multiple monitors.
Edit: No-CD patch is also integrated with Voobly's Client
You could check out Revival as a case study of both herding cats and playing old games with a loose-knit (at best) community.
In my experience, the limiting factor is the community and not infrastructure. Voobly is another destination of interest. Note that the infrastructure exists for a handful of games, but there's only interest in a couple.
I am no expert at this, not really my area, but the way it works is that you load up your own program alongside the regular game, and that program will reach in to the game's memory and mess with it.
If this story is to be believed Voobly was started by the hacker Tormentium after he basically killed the game on other platforms with his free hacking toolkits. Genius move, if slightly ruthless, and because of it we have the awesome Voobly client with a fairly strong anti-cheat system. As I understand it, Voobly has also (in)famously provided clemency to the top hacker on the platform in exchange for help on the anti-cheat system.
The windows option to have elements appear bigger, which you can also set in the resolution options.
Also, do your game room settings look like this: http://www.voobly.com/files/view/31695090/db4efrmhsw88gf2wefkakbmj9nqvfr7r/VGR8.png ?
You need the compatible patch, here how to use it with Voobly:
https://support.voobly.com/display/vkb/KB1054+Clean+installation+of+Aoe2HD+with+compatibility+patch
Then you can download it and pick as data mod:
http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/638/Rome-Returns/Installation-Help
You can download Rome Returns from Voobly:
http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/638/Rome-Returns
And aok.heavens as offline version (not works for aoeHD):

hi NuzzieBoy,
Checked these examples about mouse problem, maybe one of this suggestion can help with your problem:
http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/253679 or http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/255939
Net problem can happen for many reason. Portforwarding UDP 16000 in most of case can fix it, but if the problem still exists, I suggest try contact with tech support at Help room or tech forum.
Since there's a tournament coming up, let's have some matches to practice a little bit before being "11'ed" at by the entire community. Here's my Voobly, feel free to PM me to schedule:
