I don't have experience with RoN, but with AoE2 and AoM they did a very poor job and the releases were very buggy, mainly concerning the multiplayer :-/ But tbh who knows how much fault is really at Skybox Labs and how much actually on Microsoft's project planning...
But with that said, AoE2 HD has been patched over the year to remove most of the bugs, it got a new expansion, so afaik it's playable okay now. AoMEE has also been patched somehow, single player is mostly okay to my knowledge, but multiplayer is still very problematic with stuttering and lagging for many people (for many it runs fine though, I'm one of them, maybe you would be as well?) Actually some days ago the rated games feature broke and you currently cannot play any rated games on AoMEE :-/ Maybe after a year it'll be fine the same as AoE2 HD? :-)
Simply if you're looking for a single player experience and exceed the required computer specifications by some measure, I think you'll be content with what you get. If you're in it for the multiplayer though, I'm not so sure, you might try sticking with the originals and play through Voobly - more players and activity on both games. (Also a higher level of play there, Steam is more casual.)
If you still have the original, you might want to give a try to Voobly - a lot more active players of different skill levels and various types of games hosted. I think you might have a better chance of finding more suitable opponents there.
When Christmas Sale kicks in and then when the expansion is released, population on Steam should be much better than now, question is for how long though :-)
Original Titans work on Win 7 no problem, and you can play multiplayer through Voobly - it's more alive than Steam, and it's the place where competitive play including tournaments happens (but not just that, players of all skill levels are there).
So far the original Titans are the better version, as XLightningStormL pointed out, multiplayer on Steam is problematic (single player is okay), but they're slowly working on it, there should be another patch later this month aiming to help with some of the problems.
They are being addressed in the Voobly Balance Patch - give it a shot, it's quite well received and new version correcting further problems is already being worked upon.
Hey, heavy mac user here. You have several options on a tight budget, no need for a new machine:
Install Windows through bootcamp. Tip: If you are a student you should contact your university's IT department and ask for an educational copy of windows which are usually provided dirt cheap. Remember, it has to be Windows Vista+, no XP support.
Install Wine it does suffer a bit of performance issues but its FREE so who cares.
Get a friend / family member in your household who already owns a copy to lend you their windows disk + key.
Install Parallels. Not so cheap option if you pay for everything, BUT you can just fire everything without leaving Mac OS.
Hm, I'll ask after they rerelease the game. Also, I do know of some places to find concept art. There was some on the ESO website for AoM before it got taken down, but luckily I uploaded it all to Imgur.
There is also some AoT concept art at Gamespot here but its incomplete.
I already uploaded it a couple months ago when someone else asked. Just use this link.
Ok, I can't find the exact original.. but this ones pretty close? I edited out some random fire giants someone had added to the map and it seems ok now.. Anyway, if that's still not what you want I'll have to ask someone if they have the original, cause he has a ton of old scenarios. Sorry if it's wrong!

Edit: Thanks for gold :O
You should be careful about the wishful comparison with AoEIIHD, as those games are miles apart in everything regarding community interest, and that also reflects in the devs' interest, as it directly relates to their ability to get money out of it (compare the 2 high-quality (content-wise) DLCs for AoC and the subpar 1 for AoM). It's just ironic that the lack of interest is largely caused by their own failure to deliver a respectable product - EE did have a clear path laid in front of it to truly become the lead platform, and I think most of us were hoping it would come true as the current options are not near ideal, it even did have quite interesting initial numbers, but...
Tbh the only platform that cares about the game experience currently is Voobly that does prepare balance patches, fun mods and ladders for them like AoMT Hybrid (AoT with some key AoM rules), maintains ladders and does provide actual player support and moderation (so e.g. dealing with cheaters and game problems). And you have (probably almost, there's something at EE lately I've noticed) all the tournaments played there (for the said reasons).
(Btw maybe it's about getting used to it or something, but from my experience and also from what I've gleaned from a significant part of the multiplayer community, the Steam community features are actually part of the reason why the multiplayer experience is lacking - even the 12-year old ESO was an awesome platform for player communication compared to it...)
You don't need to copy anything extra from your CDs, you just need a nocd crack - don't have any link handy (maybe someone else does?), but you can play without a CD simply through Voobly, that installs it automatically (and is also a pretty good place to play online).
Atty and weak? Well Gaia okay, Kronos not top tier, but has his uses, so I wouldn't say altogether bad, and Oranos, well, that's hands down top tier.
Atties should try to win in early-mid game, where they're really strong (great raiding ability combined with easy eco management), and avoid late game, where they're weaker. From what I've heard and read some boost to lategame could be useful (especially considering match-ups with top tiers like Zeus/Isis), but I'm not sure how much to not make them universally op, probably not much.
The idea about moving units out of Palaces seems interesting though, after all, you build eg Myrmidons at Fortresses and Barracks, too...
Btw I think the complaints I heard are more about eco being weaker than anything else - some Atty expert should specify here :-)
>I wonder what it would take to make an AoM fan balance patch fix various different inconsistencies between the cultures, as well as introduce new, never before seen mechanics into the game?
A lot :-) There have been numerous attempts at balance changes, a lot of them done by experts like TheMista and others, and they all failed to be accepted.
Right now Voobly has a balance patch that's aiming to take it very slow in balance department (which seems to go down better with people), but still removes a lot of real bugs - this approach seems to work so far, so hopefully the work will continue there.
Voobly automatically installs a no-CD patch as part of its anti-exploit measures. If you want to play online you'll have to install Voobly anyway (unless you're playing AoM:EE), so it might be easiest to just install it.

If you're looking for multiplayer - then check out Voobly. EE was created almost solely for campaign players - there are many issues with lag and such on multiplayer that don't seem to be getting resolved, and won'y be anytime soon.
The ESO for AoM doesn't work anymore, I think the certificate ran out or something and Microsoft didn't update it.
If you want to play the original AoM you are probably better off on Gameranger since barely anyone plays that on Voobly.
If you want to play the expansion (AoT) you can play on either platform. Voobly is where the more competitive players are though, I think, it also has a rating for skill, which Gameranger unfortunately doesn't. :c
You just download and run both of them.. make an account and then play really.. you might have some problems with getting the right version of the game or whatever. Especially if you try on Gameranger. PM me if you get stuck with that, hf!
Here's the link to the guide that is posted on the wiki: How to play the original AoM on modern PCs (This guide applies only to people who have the original non-gold edition of the game as a disk)
Assuming that you don't have a disk, there are two options: buying a new disk or torrenting a copy of the game. As /u/Black__Adder mentioned above, you can buy the gold edition from Amazon for $10. The gold edition should work on modern computers. The other option is to illegally download a copy of the game from a torrenting website. Because I don't want to break any reddit or subreddit rules, I won't provide a guide on how to do this, but you could do some googling to find a guide on how to torrent a copy of the gold edition or the original.
I strongly recommend the first option; buying a copy of the gold edition from Amazon for $10. Here's a link to the Amazon page
I doubt it, here I'll upload it here:

It's an aom vanilla version of the map. To convert it to function with the expansion (and TotD), just open it up in the editor and save it again.
So uh.... Has anyone played that fun lotr V2 settlers map?
I've played it a few times and it's and awesome map! It's a settlers style scenario, but the map is a re-creation of middle earth!!! It's way fun, if anyone wants a copy of it - let me know and we can get online and play!!
edit: got some requests to download the map so I just uploaded it to filedropper. Here you go: http://www.filedropper.com/lotrv2
Hey if you don't mind looking at this replay as well I would appreciate it (played today 1v1 Isis vs Zeus on AOM:EE):

Sad part is I felt like I was doing very well in this one until he destroyed me...
I created the mod:
- Custom projectile anim file for Towers.
- Custom proto entry for the new projectile.
- Changed projectileprotounit for Tower in proto.
Here you are: https://gofile.io/d/AYrQRA
In case you're not already familiar with it, Hero Tug is an AoM MOBA scenario which has a fairly small map and is limited to 4 players (2 lanes). It does have experience, gold, and upgrades to purchase, but each champion only has the automatic in-game ability (e.g. Bellerophon's jump).
The article here: https://www.ageofempires.com/news/age-of-mythology-2-7-patch-preview/ will tell you how to grab the patch preview on Steam :)
Any luck so far? Your system doesn't seem to be an aged one, but still if all else fails I suggest you check if AOM EE runs in a clear OS environment on the same computer. What I mean, grab a USB stick or drive and install "live" Win7 on it (links to guides below). Then boot from the stick, install steam and AOM. Also, make sure you install the latest driver for video card (you mentioned Radeon HD 7660G). See if it works. If it does, it means that your regular system has software conflicts or some other problems that prevent normal operation (at least in some cases).

Have you tried playing through Voobly? It installs its own thing which allows the game to launch, and you can start the game to single player as well, could be worth a shot.
That just has to do with how matchmaking tracks your points on the current servers, the ESO servers went down a long time ago, I even said in my comment above:
"Thats one reason why they should fix it obviously, people losing points in ranked games because the loser forces oos."
Also voobly players had a patch to fix that, here Ill find it for you:
http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/182710
Thats how voobly did their points system. That didnt solve OOS obviously just fixed the loss of points of both players. Which is what I said they should fix above.
If you still have the original like you say, then give a go to Voobly, there's a decent multiplayer community there with balance patches and all :-)
(Btw to answer your question, the original game does not work with Steam.)
Hm... I think there might be some people checking this thread out that would be interested to know that Voobly is hosting a Zelda 1v1 Tournament.
If you're interested at all, here you go: http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/220999
The official RTS League mapset is worth checking out. They should be pretty well balanced.
If you want something more interesting and less competitive, I recently came across these maps which probably are not balanced.
If you're looking for crazier stuff like MOBA, cat-and-mouse, or survival maps I'm the wrong guy to ask.
It looks like some people have had success using Voobly on OS X to play AoE2 by using Wineskin. Age of Mythology works moderately well in Wine itself, so you might be able to get the whole thing working with a bit of luck.
Voobly is a program that allows AoM:TT (not AoM:EE) to play online multiplayer games. It's basically a third-party add-on to replace the built-in online option which no longer works because Ensemble Studios' servers aren't around anymore. It's not as nicely integrated as the multiplayer in AoM:EE, but it doesn't have issues with lag and disconnections.
