Ouch. I guess it helps, as it was what I wanted, but this makes things very hard :P
You could try Warsow or Urban Terror though I'm not sure how many people play them. I loved Urban Terror a couple years ago. They also aren't available on steam AFAIK.
Other than that I'm not sure.
Also there is a race cup going on with a prizepool of 100 euros that just started. Not a great time to spec though because everyone is on the cup server where spectating is disabled xD
More info here :
Haha hey abegeh of course! We have tournaments every 2 weeks more or less :D Hope to see you at the next one!

Oh and if you check out my challonge page you'll see past cups for aug/sept etc with 40-50 players signed!
If you like twitch shooter, Warsow is free and fun and it'll run nicely on the lousiest of PC (when I found it, I played on a cruddy laptop and it was smooth after lowering some settings).
A little late to the party but I finally listened to the interview. Thanks for posting it!
The archery/bridge part was perfect. Will definitely use that image in the future when I talk to stubborn people blocking at the "sport" part of "esports".
Like you it seems, I'm not convinced by, and I'm not pushing for esports as we know it in olympic games. Proprietary games have no place there.
For me, the only true esport game I saw in my life that could fit the olympic games terms was Warsow. It was free, open-source, made with an old enough engine so that it runs on most computers. It was a truly great fast FPS with a real sports spirit.
I remember Matthieu Dallon, head of ESWC, talking about including Warsow in the ESWC line-up (they didn't in the end).
Now Warsow is pretty much dead since years, and it always was a niche game even in its prime time. As much as I would like to see esports going the open way like Warsow did, I see no way of that happening in a popular fashion, given creating, maintaining and marketing a game is so costly.
hmm maybe you misunderstood me. Anyway here are the official forums where there are more people that know the engine and how things work https://www.warsow.net/forum
Here's a link to the IRC channel where you can also ask if you want: https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.quakenet.org/#warsow
Yes.
You could try warsow. Its free but it doesn't have the exact same movement afaik. Here is some more info about it. https://www.warsow.net/wiki/Movement#2.2.
Imho quake 3 defrag is by far the best option if you want to learn strafejumping and quake 3 is probably cheaper than quake live.
Tired of team-mates holding you back, wrecking the game or your grove?
Play the fastest sport on the web and duel Warsow.
Don't pre-pay for alphas or bother with simplified FPS.

>It seems a shame that one the beat games out there seems dead.
Well, development has stopped at the end of 2016, so it is indeed dead.
Or was? The website still seems to be online with a 2020 copyright and the post about the development stopping isn't there anymore (archive on the Wayback Machine). Has a new team taken the development over?
Interesting ill have to see if I can download the files from it. So far I have not figured out how to get the files it uses, but I dont have quake live myself (used to until it went paid), so am not even sure if it will work correctly with the version of quake I have.
I am probably going to try making a map pak for the game Warsow: https://www.warsow.net/ and it already has a game of ctf:tactics which does similar to some of the abilities of QC, so with some modifications there might could be a new mod made for it to be QC-Duel/DM/TDM/CA/CTF/etc to mimic the game, but be easier to edit and adjust.
I am probably going to try using the Quark level editor to make the maps, since it has the most support for Warsow level editing and is the most up to date from the various editors: http://quark.sourceforge.net/
Anyone else here play warsow? What do you think of recreating QC in warsow?
ya guys! should be a great time with Leshaka streaming the action! come check it out :D

Not sure if its still active but I believe warsow might be in your direction, unfortunately it is FPS. You could also try Quake Live.
EDIT: There's also Shootmania, but that's not Free2Play
