We are working on similar project. Still missing some (many) features, but have post/link submiting, commenting and upvoting working: screenshot
more about the project: http://zeronet.io/, https://www.reddit.com/r/zeronet/
Those are all ZeroNet sites. So yes, you need ZeroNet running on your computer in order to visit them. As long as you've got ZeroNet running, you're all good.
Not really sure what you were expecting... Here's where you can download zeronet.
And ofc, the zerohello homepage will have links for you to follow as well.
Take a look at http://zeronet.io/ && https://www.reddit.com/r/zeronet/, is the closest i know to what Richard wants to build in the show.
The show was already mentioned in the subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/zeronet/comments/6a3liw/does_anyone_watch_silicon_valley/
That sounds cool, albeit a bit complicated. Connecting might be a pain if you have to spin up a Tor instance every time you want to login.
I came across ZeroNet the other day, which allows you to deploy a website over bittorrent, so there's no need to resolve your home IP. You may be able to build a storage service off that.
As an SSH alternative, there's Mosh. It was designed to support roaming clients, so maybe you can use it for a "roaming" server.
As others have said, hosting a large torrent site solely for Tor would make it hard to pay for operations costs.
However, ZeroTorrent.bit and PlayMovies.bit via Zeronet are good alternatives. Zeronet is a decentralized web client where the site visitors also help host the sites they visit. Sites can't be taken down since there's no central server that can be shutdown or domain to be seized. It can also be used with Tor so users can hide their IP address.
Interesting. Have you considered integrating functions from any decentralized service providers? The greater number of people that can host this, the more abuse-proof it becomes. Consider looking into IPFS (decentralized storage/ file system), Zeronet (distributed website hosting), and/or Cjdns (decentralized meshnet-based protocol for routing and address distribution, shares vague similarities to OSLR and B.A.T.M.A.N.).
Also, please tidy up that readme file. Hype is nice, but I also like to know what exactly I'm looking at. Good luck!
Ah, kan ook. Niet zo heel snel, maar het is genoeg voor lichte websites met niet al te veel dynamische inhoud.
Nu nog zeronet van de grond afkrijgen, en ik zie hier de toekomst in! :D
and ZeroNet (which is already quite functional)
Play with it in Docker
docker run -p 15441:15441 -p 43110:43110 nofish/zeronet
I also advise looking at ZeroNet.io and MaidSafe. And if worse come to worse, start educating yourself on meshnets now to be able to make local intranets with your town in the future.
I would love for Tom to get an expert on the show who can explain to me how this compares to ZeroNet or MaidSafe or some of those more advanced anonymizing systems like I2P.
Hmm, I like the idea... Reminds me of ZeroNet — I wonder if it could be hosted there.
EDIT: ZeroNet has become much larger than when I first looked at it. It's new homepage (on the regular internet) is zeronet.io.
I made this http://127.0.0.1:43110/1tA1kbYmvY2UDrPwqwT8Xf5KxTGRntxtk/ a zeronet forum specifically for SS
to access you will need the zeronet client http://zeronet.io which is invulnerable to be taken down due to it's decentralized nature
I'm not sure, but there are some torrent programs on I2P (which is also part of the dark web, just a different network). One popular one is I2PSnark: https://github.com/i2p/i2p.i2p/tree/master/apps/i2psnark
First you'd have to download I2P: http://geti2p.net - I2PSnark is included in the software package. Torrenting over Tor is a bad idea because it will severely slow down the network, and can also de-anonymize you in the process (unless this has changed)!
You can also torrent over ZeroNet, which uses the BitTorrent network: http://zeronet.io - maybe this would be a good new blog post. Thanks for the idea!
For the tech backend there are:
For economic incentives we only know about bitcache, which might do:
Check out ZeroNet. It currently runs on the regular internet (so there's still IP censoring and regional blocking, unfortunately) but it's a decentralized web. Where websites are hosted by the visitors to the site. Pretty damn cool, and completely avoids censorship.
There's currently plans to get it off of the current reliance on the regular internet. It's currently still connected through namecoin and trackers (to connect peers). Still damn cool though.
Nice thing. Check out this too: http://zeronet.io. Peer-to-peer serverless websites. Forums, blogs with following (work almost like twitter), trackers, etc. You can check it even without installing via gateway: http://bit.no.com:43110 After installing ZeroNet you won't need the gateway anymore. You should change bit.no.com to 127.0.0.1 then.
>we have to remain vigilant about YouTube
Better idea, bad pitch: fuck YouTube right in its black hole sphincter.
Start working with alternatives to build a decentralized, unregulated video sharing site or protocol.
Start investigating the possibilities that ZeroNet can bring to the table on this.
Start investigating Alexandria for file storage and distribution.
Use these problems to solve your problem in code, not whining or laws or activism.
Otherwise you will NEVER solve your problems.
I've played with I2P a little, but not for a few years now. I understand that it theoretically offers better anonymity protection than Tor, but I don't believe it's had any independent audit/analysis done yet, as it's not as well known - do you know if that's changed since?
There's a lot of interesting work going on in this space (that being; decentralised & censorship-resistant hosting, but not necessarily anonymous), you may find the MaidSafe project interesting - I don't believe it's launched yet, but the code is on Github, and from what I've read, is very interesting.
For something that's available right now, and built-on already proven technologies (BitTorrent + Bitcoin + Namecoin), you may wish to have a look at ZeroNet.
