No one haven't mentioned yet about one useful app, especially if you will travel through city by yourself (better be with someone of citizens). It calls "2gis" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.dublgis.dgismobile and has near all information about city (routes, buildings, public transport, etc.). You can use it offline. It has English interface. Also you of course need to purchase local sim (internet is fast and not so expensive (10$ per 8+ GB). With local sim you also will have opportunity to connect with public WiFi (because I couldn't connect to public net in airports with my Russian sim, so I don't sure that it works with foreign sims).
It’s not on App store, Apple removed it. They sent out notification to disable auto-offload apps feature so that it doesn’t get deleted from your phone.
On Android you can easily find the apk but it seems to be still on Play Store (link)
GPS is just a coordination system, it works same everywhere except when US gov want to shut down it on specific areas for military operations.
What you're looking for is navigator software with good local maps and English interface. something like this, probably. Or this
2gis android ios is the best app for navigating cities especially if you're using public transport(public transport in Moscow is really good). Yandex taxi is the most common taxi app, but if you're going to get here by air in Moscow, aeroexpress from airport is the better option than taxi.
2GIS have very good coverage, much more detailed then Google maps, Openstreetmaps, Bing and other. Also it have offline mode and detailed information about companies and other business with contact phones, work schedule and other information.
