I know Yvision: https://yvision.kz/explore AFAIK, it's in Russian only.
There's also ZTB: https://vk.com/ztb_kz It has its own website but I think its VK page is more popular. In terms of language, it has posts in both Russian and Kazakh.
No one haven't mentioned yet about one useful app, especially if you will travel through city by yourself (better be with someone of citizens). It calls "2gis" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.dublgis.dgismobile and has near all information about city (routes, buildings, public transport, etc.). You can use it offline. It has English interface. Also you of course need to purchase local sim (internet is fast and not so expensive (10$ per 8+ GB). With local sim you also will have opportunity to connect with public WiFi (because I couldn't connect to public net in airports with my Russian sim, so I don't sure that it works with foreign sims).
> It would be really problematic to change directly from AUD to KZT. Even if you find some place, exchange rate would be much higher
No problems. I will bring USD! That's easily done.
> What do you mean by money changers?
Some countries have businesses that do exactly and only that - exchange money. Places like TravelEx etc.
According to even Wikivoyage
"Along Respubika Avenue you can find a number of 24-hour currency exchange"
No such thing as "the best vpn". Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. And since a lot of populat VPNs are blocked in kazakhstan just Google until you find one that works and is in your price range.
Again, I mostly use 1.1.1.1 app (android and ios only) that unblocks almost everything, but it isn't exactly a VPN.
My personal VPN choice is LimeVPN because it's very cheap, but it requires manual setup and tweaking so it might not fit most people.

There's a sizable french community in Almaty. There's this french cafe on Kurmangazy-Dostyk (that's an intersection of two streets) where you could find some of them. I thought it'd be good for you to know in case you get into trouble or if you want to socialize with them. I don't remember the name of the cafe, but I think it has a picture of the eifel tower somewhere in the sign. Or maybe Google "french cafe in Almaty".
Edit: oh no, I gave you a wrong address. Here's the right one: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g298251-d4589827-Reviews-Cafe_de_Paris-Almaty.html
As a lurker on this sub this sounds like great news, Kazakhstan has always fascinated me, it's ethnic makeup, it being typecasted into a film, how nursultan has always struct me as a liminal blade runner hellscape.
How central asia isn't really talked about in the media, I wonder what goes on there that most of the foreign public don't hear about for good and bad.
My country has succesfully peacefully overthrown a dictatorship even with US intervention but never to the extent of the kremlin mingling with your country and massacring civillians/protestors like russians do with every single problem, I can't say much my lens are limited, I'm atheist but I pray your country pulls through and it's people given power against your autocratic oligarchs.
Don't forget to use a tor bridge, you don't need any email to setup a throwaway reddit account, if you want extra security setup a VM via virtualbox, I personally enjoy parrot os, you can delete this if anything goes wrong, or you could download tails os on a usb and load it on any device, encrypt your hard drive with true crypt, make your transactions on monero, IVPN is a good service, good luck I wish you all well.
ozon alexei play molchat doma.
Locked phones do not exist on Kazakhstan market. That's just not a thing here. You own the device you bought. When you buy contract phone here it basically works like pre-paid. You pay for all monthly services and their interest each month forward. So operators don't give a s**t if you are actually using allotted traffic and minutes/sms allowance or just using the phone with other SIM card.
Check what version of your phone you have. And compare available bands/connectivity online to providers supported bands. Most likely that you have Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925A FDD-LTE+WCDMA+GSM
> What if I get an Amazing job offer while I am studying in Kazakhstan?
Assuming you are not a KZ national.
If a company of a country you are from gives you a job offer, treat is as if you are back home. It is basically a work-from-home arrangement.
If it is a KZ company hiring you, then they would have to get you a work permit.
Alternatively, you can use a middlemen such as upwork.com or old-style staffing agencies which will keep roughly 10% of your income.
> I can’t add a bank account since I’m not in the USA.
Can you withdraw to a Wise Multi-Currency Account?
https://wise.com/gb/multi-currency-account/
> majority of them either don’t send to KZ (such as transfer wise)
You may not be able to send in KZT, but I've sent EUR transfers from my TransferWise account to my Halyk Multi-Currency Account a bunch of times. How did you try to do it?
There are very few English-language books about Kazakhstan, and practically nothing for that age level. You might try to track down this kid’s book or An Illustrated History of Kazakhstan, though note that the second one, though it has lots of maps and pictures, is still more oriented towards adults.

But I might scan it eventually if you want.
