You're #5 on /r/all. People want to use this. Android version please, and if you're going to announce an Android version your iOS app and then take years to deliver while never actually working on it and focusing all your development time on iOS whinging and alcoholic beverages, please let us know so we can find someone else to make it.
It is definitely still there, but it appears it has been delisted for some reason. The app as not updated since March 2020, so maybe there is some new policy it is violating unless it gets updated.

I play on Android, there is also iOS and Steam versions. I think its best (and most active for online) on mobile.
The base game is free, then the expansions can be purchased a la carte or as a big bundle
Well this is weird. I was going to talk about Ascension as it's one of my favorite games, but I went to check the Play Store to mention the price, and it looks like it has been removed from the Play Store? Or at least the link doesn't work for me when I'm not logged in... The link does work when I'm logged in, which is good since I had purchased almost all the DLC. Oddly I don't see anyone talking about it. It does look like the base game is still free on iOS so you may be able to check it out.
Anyway, Deck Builders are my favorite genre and Ascension is probably my favorite of them. There's a bit more conflict than Dominion, it's a bit deeper than Star Realms, and the expansions add a lot to the game. I haven't played online in ages so I don't know what the current community is like.
I haven't tried Shards, though, so can't compare.
Thanks for the great list! I've been playing Ascension non stop lately, its a great deck building game that is free. The expansion packs cost money but some of the cheaper ones are worth it because it adds a lot to the game.
Ascension is a digital version of a deck building card game. It meets the reqs of asynchronous, up to four players, and available on Android + iOS.
It says free, but that's basically for a demo. No ads. IAP to unlock base game and for expansions. The expansions are different cards with different mechanics.
I own the actual game and it's decent if you like deck building games. I bought the physical game because it could be played with only two players and I was looking for something that my wife and I could play. My understanding from my brother, who is much more into board games, is that the expansions are better and make the game better. I don't own any expansions yet, though.
Another game is Outwitters. It's a turn based strategy game. This is asynchronous, up to four players - but it's 2v2, and available on Android + iOS.
It lets you have multiple games going at the same time. You get a list of the games you have going.
Free. Has ads - but any IAP purchase removes them. IAPs are one time only to unlock extra stuff.
Abstract games are ones that are entirely about the mechanics, there's no meaningful integration of thematic elements. Think classics like Chess, Go, or Checkers - those are abstracts, as are The Duke and Hive.
If you do check out Ascension, I suggest grabbing the Realms Unraveled set - I personally think it's the best of the ones I've played. (Ascension has many base sets you can get that all will let you play the game, but they all have different cards, some new mechanics, etc.) If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can also try out Ascension for free (with the original base set) or cheap (with any of the others) on there - see the Play Store and iTunes.
Oh man, I've been there and I can understand. I'm still there tbh.
Have you tried Ascension? It's your run of the mill deckbuilding game with its own twists and it has 2 resources that needs to be managed instead of 1.
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension&hl=en
ios: https://itunes.apple.com/ph/app/ascension-chronicle-godslayer/id441838733?mt=8
The game has since come out with a few pay-to-unlock expansions. But I'm assuming they would never pair you with a user without the same expansion during online play.
One I can't believe they missed in favor of Yhatzee is Ascension. Super fun deckbuilder that has the entire original base game free (although I recommend Realms Unraveled and, when it's added, Dreamscape)
I don't think I've seen anything like Gwent on mobile. I think I did see a Steam version on Table Top Simulator (but that's desktop).
If you like card games I recommend trying Ascension - easily to learn and very addictive. You sort of build your desk as you play by collecting them from the board as the pop up. Easy online play with other people too:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension&hl=en
Also if you're into physical board games, I've read that Condottiere has some similar mechanics:
Good point. There is also Ascension too - it's not as large as MTG or (and I think) Hearthstone in terms of number of cards. I think Ascension's size, expansion model in digital version would work very well with Gwent.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension&hl=en
You can buy a few packs via the Android version - doesn't cost much. However you can still play without "expansions". So I think they could do something similar. If you want to just buy the base game and play that then it's not play to win and it's doable. But if you want to buy expansions then you can and create games based on expansions.
The awesome thing about Ascension too is also that you can have games of varying length - so you can have multiple games running. Eg 1 game is set so you have 1 day to make you next move, others 10 mins.
My partner is very much into MTG but I don't find it fun. And hearthstone meh - but Gwent oh yes!

Looking for any kind of online asynchronous multiplayer for 3 players.. I have some friends who want to play a game sort of "throughout the week" and take turns throughout the day as we find time.
We've played Ascension and that one seemed to hit a sweet spot, but we're just looking for other options.
Tried Ticket to Ride but turns only take half a second and it can get very drawn out if I'm only taking a turn 1-2 a day.
We've also considered games like Risk or Settlers of Catan (or any similar games) but there are SO MANY I'm not sure I want to just try them all.
You might like Ascenion and/or Star Realms. They are both are digital versions of card games where they do expansions instead of booster packs.
Both are "deck building" games where you start the game with a small deck of weak cards and as you play, you pick up better cards that go into your discard pile. When you run through your deck, the discard pile is shuffled into your deck and you then gain access to the cards you picked up.
The digital versions are the same thing as the physical game with full expansions. Both of the digital games are available as a free, limited, game to try out. There is a one time purchase to unlock the base game. The expansions are available as one time IAPs.
I own the physical versions of both of these games.
If you all have android devices, you could try Ascension. It's based on the deckbuilding card game. You can set up games that last over the course of a day or a few days. Everyone takes turns when they can. My friends and I had a lot of fun with it.
There's also Conquer Club which let's you play Risk online with friends or random people. There are a ton of maps and settings, but if you're not into Risk, it probably won't be that fun.
Ascension is a great card game, but kind of different than Throwdown, because you fight for a better score and dont deal damage or fuse cards..
> For a card game, Ascension has a very active online community too. Great game. iOS only.
Actually, the Android version has been out for a year or two.

If you like deckbuilder card games like Dominion I'd recommend Ascension. It's completely Free to Play for the base deck, with the option of purchasing the optional expansions.
I just spent an hour playing that! Very very fun!
It reminds me a lot of Ascention!
I bought all the expansion packs for Ascention, I spent a lot of time playing that, but the AI gets a little easy after a while
Its a card game made popular with board game players. It is heavily inspired by Dominion. The base game is free but you have to pay for the expansions which range from 2.99 - 5.99.
Edit: I really want to gush on the base game being free. The base game will give you and your friend dozens of hours of fun. You really don't need to spend a dime to feel like you got a complete game. Also, there is no meta-game. There is no unlocking cards, or stamina bars, or storyline, or any bullshit like that. When you buy an expansion it comes with every card that that expansion has in its real world counterpart. This game is simply an exact copy of the popular tabletop game.
Linkme: Ascension
I've been playing a lot of Ascension. It's a card based boardgame/deck building game. The base game is free + IAP for expansions.
Here are some digital deck building games!
An okay port of Dominion. Has Desktop / Tablet versions but no Phone version just yet. The base set is free, but expansions cost money. ~~It didn't have play vs friend either last time I played, but it was in the works (it has a ladder and single player campaign.)~~ The most recent build has a ladder, single player campaign and the ability to challenge players by name. Note that it is online-only. Good in a pinch, but doesn't replace the real game.
Link: https://www.playdominion.com
A physical deck building game that was ported quite well to digital. It's much in the same vein as Dominion but with its own spin. It also had our very own Brian Kibler on the design team! Only has offline multi and single player modes though, but is generally a very well built app (Disclaimer: I only have the iOS version) Note that expansions are microtransactions.

Apple App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/ascension-chronicle-godslayer/id441838733?mt=8
This is actually the game Ben Brode said helped inspire the Tavern Brawl! Don't let the crappy graphics fool you, this game is awesome. It's a single player rogue-like, and it is viciously hard, but it is really very fun and a great little indie game. ~~Unfortunately, it's iOS only as far as I can tell~~ Apparently it is actually PC and iOS!

Thanks OP btw.. snagged in Canada.
Quite a few deckbuilders have digital versions that you can try to see if you like it enough to buy the tabletop version:
Dominion: The granddaddy of all deck builders. Euro game, single resource, cards are bought from a pre-set pool, most strategic. Tons of expansions. https://www.playdominion.com/Dominion/gameClient.html
Ascension: Dual resource, cards are bought from a rotating line up. Cards are released in Magic the Gathering-style block sets. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ascension-chronicle-godslayer/id441838733?mt=8 or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension&hl=en
Star Realms: Made by the same people as Ascension. Streamlined version of Ascension. Dual resource, line-up. Spaceship themed. Direct player interaction. http://www.starrealms.com/digital-game/
For these you can play the base set or against AI without having to buy anything.
There's always the DC Comics Deckbuilding Game as well if you're into that theme. There's also Quarriors, which is a deckbuilding engine but with dice instead of cards. Those are the only deckbuilders I have personal experience with.
Probably Ascension. It's done well and it's the only game I find myself consistently coming back to.

Have you tried Ascension?
Yeah I think board games is a good spot to look. For card games I'll mention Ascension, Dominion, Wingspan and for strategy Neuroshima Hex.
I'll start with a couple of asynchronous multiplayer + cross platform games. Asynchronous multiplayer games enable players to take their turns at a time that suits them.
These may not suit what your after but its all that I can think of currently.
Neuroshima Hex - Portal Games is working to get this back online. (currently down on Android)
Tsuro - Double check one as I'm not 100% if this supports both asynchronous + cross platform.

Ascension is a pretty good card game
The game I always come back to and have put the most time into is Ascension, which is a deck building game playable solo vs AI or online with others. Base game is free and the expansion DLCs add an absolutely ludicrous amount of content to mix and match to mix things up, which leads to a really high replay value.
Deck builders are unlike CCGs/TCGs like Hearthstone since you and your opponent(s) begin with the same handful of cards, and then you take turns acquiring/defeating cards in the center row. The tactics are focused on what you can do with what you drew, and what cards are in the center. Longer-term strategy is more about purging weaker cards from your deck to make future draws more consistently better while working to acquire cards that mesh well with your other cards and denying the opponent cards that benefit the deck/style they're working on. You're ultimately trying to create a better "engine" than your opponent, and your turns can become really long as you're drawing cards into your hand that you just acquired on that same turn. In this deck builder, winner is the player with the highest points.
Star Realms and Shards of Infinity are other games that are similar, but have a focus on attacking the opponent(s) to deplete their health as opposed to building up victory points, so if you like Ascension, those will fit the bill, too.
My personal runner-up game would be Race for the Galaxy, which is another card game, and just as wonderful, but it's a bit heavier and harder to learn/master.
I didn't play much of it because the tablet I have is old, but I hear Ascension is a good one.
> Thankfully, hearthstone is the only game where you can play totally free.
After getting hooked on Hearthstone, I decided to try out several others. There's Ascention, Hex (which actually sells itself on being able to play for free), several Magic games, and many of the games at http://tradingcardgames.com/review_category/pc/.
The beginner set of cards in most of these games aren't very interesting and they force you to go through long, grindy solo campaigns to get decent cards. Hearthstone, on the other hand, gives you interesting decks right off the bat, so it feels like one can be competitive with Hearthstone with less investment.
A bit of a diversion, but it's just not true that Hearthstone is the only totally free card game. It probably is, however, the best.
> It's pay not to grind.
Good distinction. Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion. Is that the same Ascension as this? If so, I'll give it a shot on mobile.
We Didn't Playtest This At All is quite fun for shits and giggles. At some point you could bring Exploding kittens too http://www.explodingkittens.com also.
Alternative to CAH (although it's pretty awesome) is Apples to Apples http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/74/apples-apples
Any Trivia Card Games could be a good idea too.
Had quite a lot of fun playing Ascension on my tablet when boyfriend has to travel. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension&hl=en - but does require internet connection though. We haven't tried playing it on my phone but it does say it's compatible with phones too. But yeah not too sure about how social it would be but if you are with friends who all have say Androids / iOS it would be a good option.
Chupacabra isn't a card game but it's a dice game like Zombie dice yet simpler http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/120515/chupacabra-survive-night
Doesn't it invalidate the game if you draw Exodia in one hand?
And like I said, there are many more games that use deckbuilding lol.
CCGs (collectible card games - pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and magic are the main ones) have that already stated problem, but it is still RNG (since you have to buy booster packs or whatever)
Anyway, you can't really judge it unless you try it for yourself.
I personally love Ascension, and the official mobile app contains the entire base game for free, so I'd recommend you check it out.
How about this link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension ?

Just going to point out this absolutely fantastic game that I never see mentioned here, that has "IAP" but does it totally properly.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playdekgames.android.Ascension
Its an android port of a relatively popular physical "board game"-genre game.
Multiplayer pass-and-play. Online play. Vs AI play. It does all the nittygritty scorekeeping, math, rule enforcement, reminders that you're leaving basic moves before you end your turn, etc. The game zips along much faster than the physical board game and it is a pleasure to play.
Okay great. It has ~$15 or so of IAP. But what does that get you?
I think its something like six expansions which drastically alter gameplay and you can mix/match. You can play with just expansions and leave the "base game" out, if you only want to play with certain "expansion mechanics." And the base game is free.
This isn't just some rinkydink game. Consider that the game is successful enough to warrant six expansions at $30+ for the physical version.
(note: This is NOT a CCG. Its a deckbuilder game. Think of is as "a boardgame that just happens to use lots of cards." There is no "buying packs." Expansions are all one-time purchases of complete products. You cannot purchase the same thing twice as there is no point whatsoever.)
I'm in no way affiliated with them or anything but this is a game that does it "right" on so many levels I'm shocked that, while I only casually browse this subreddit, I have never seen it mentioned.
