For now, I'm using this to give myself a tiny overlay back button:

There's supposedly some stuff going on behind the scenes for the A7 to get an officially-supported version of CyanogenMod (see jyee's comments), so longer term, that's what I'd be planning to switch to. Once I'm rooted and have a custom ROM, adding Android's offical on-screen buttons should be simple.
How about use a floating navigation app that can configure which button you want to hover at a specific corner?
An example here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appspot.app58us.backkey
I am not a fan of gestures either, but like the expanded screen space. My solution is this floating customizable back button.

I use this floating customizable back button, because gestures kind of suck: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appspot.app58us.backkey
Also, lots of good, free, open source utility apps on F-Droid. I got a compass (Trail Sense), very simple notepad (Notepad), and weather app (Geometric Weather).
こんな感じかね?
あと誰か似たようなスクロールボタンは知らないだろうか……
それさえあれば片手操作が捗るんだが
I use a floating back button, which lets me get rid of the button bar for bigger screen and you can position the floating back button anywhere, which is great for one handed browsing. It has a lot of customization options too. Here it is:

Gestures suck, even after getting used to them. There are certain situations it just won't register. I find a floating back button so much better, especially for one handed use.

Gestures suck, use this floating customizable back button. Makes one handed use so easy.

Also, the phone has no built-in network speed monitor, which can be annoying for monitoring real time data speed. I found this app, which works very nice. Have real-time data speeds in your status bar or notifications. Very useful when you want to be able to tell something is actually uploading/downloading. (Some of the basic features that stock Android is missing is baffling.)

I find both gestures and the three buttons cumbersome to use, especially one handed. Gestures don't always register or trigger something else on the screen. The three buttons waste screen space. Both methods are annoying for one hand use. I've been using a floating customizable back button you can easily drag to anywhere on the screen.

I find gestures to work poorly, so having a floating customizable back button is super useful and makes the phone much easier to use one handed:

The Pixel comes with basic software, but is missing some useful apps right out of the box, like a simple notepad, a compass, and a weather app. I got all off of F-Droid as they are free, open source, and ad-free. You'll need to download the F-Droid apk and install any of the apps you want.

SwiftKey mostly takes care of that - just resize the new keyboard to the same height as the old one. Same with [Back Button](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appspot.app58us.backkey&hl=en).
Recent Apps and Back hardware buttons work sporadically now.
They work fine for about 4 hours after I reboot into recovery and clear the cache.
Then it sporadically stops working again.
I have no idea why.
This app helps me out a bit, puts a Back button on the screen

I use this floating customizable back button because it is 10 times better than the terrible gestures.

Its started to work again, after 3/4 months! Going good so far for 4 days, but I used this app meanwhile.

I think I use one called "Back button" which is nice.
