Learning to concentrate/focus is very important to making the mind chatter shut down... Most will say to do that by meditation. However there are many ways to meditate. You can do it while vacuuming, which was I did when I was in my 20s and had a cleaning business. You can do it while walking, sweeping, gardening or while commuting via public transit. Count your breaths and when your mind wanders come back to your breathe. That's 'unguided', unfocused meditation. Another way is to memorize a short phrase (aka mantra). It should be short, positive statement, easy to memorize and descriptive of a deep value or goal. For example, "I am getting better at concentrating."; "I love myself, I trust myself, I am beautiful."; " I am more connected to my deepest self." You get the idea. Another way to meditate is to use a Major Arcana Tarot card. Rider-Waite-Smith is best because of the colors and the vibrations they trigger.
Additionally, you might try seeing if unfocused meditation is easier while listening with headphones to Binaural Beats/Brain Entrainment for concentration...I think you'd want Alpha waves (meditation) Gamma wave sounds (concentration and attention) ... So YouTube is not good for binaural beats due to the compression used for the sound files. I use an app on my android mobile device: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ihunda.android.binauralbeat There are also websites where you can go to try it out. I find the pure sound without space music works best, but check some out yourself. Also try listening to Tibetan Bells (YouTube templesounds channel is really good) might be helpful.
Certainly not an artist, however, I own an Edward Tufte book. Alex Grey, H.R. Geiger, Monet, Picasso, and Dali are artists I can name that I like. Also, I enjoy a decent bit of album artwork for rock bands from the 60's / 70's (Cream, King Crimson, ELP), Hindu stuff that is geometric and fractal-like (Elephant guys with 1000s of hands), and of course comic book art from Jack Kirby (esp. Silver Surfer). I don't know, psychedelic stuff with form I guess?
When I see Rothko, all I can think is, someone should write a program / screensaver that applies a random color to a background, a lower rectangle, and a slightly larger rectangle above the lower rectangle. You could market it similar to the way people market binaural beat apps. Brb, you gave me an idea...
Not medication, but I've often listened to binaural beats in order to help me fall asleep quickly. I use this app and it has worked really well for me every time I use it. I currently have the same problem as yours and I'm super duper screwed because I'm a TA.
You dont need ideal conditions, binauraul beats its like switch to you brain, you want to be hyper alert, go for 40-60-80hz, want to be clear, go to 8-13hz and so on. At least i look at them this way. If you want to get high of LSD or weed by hearing sound, then i doubt you get the results, however there are some things for example (use app link at the end of comment) in this app there are halucination preset, i notice that when you listen and after, you can get some interesting unusual patterns while closed eye. Also try highest mental activity and creativity, just listen, and forget, expect nothing. Also make sure you listen sterio, both channels emmit different freaquency on mono it just wont work, id say listen on mid to low volume. Have fun.
app link: (cant help if you on apples) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ihunda.android.binauralbeat
I used this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ihunda.android.binauralbeat&hl=en
And remember to use headphones that enclose your ears. Don't play it too loudly as you'll end up with tinnitus eventually if you repeatedly fall asleep with the tones on.
Comes and goes...binuralbeats helps a lot
