When it comes to the "paranormal" people won't be convinced period I've learned. As a skeptic (sometimes I want to call myself a former one) I've had experiences as a paranormal investigator that have made me seriously question materialistic science. Not saying it's wrong on things, but when it comes to spiritual experience I think it lacks the ability to analyze it.
Bit of a background on myself, I'm an agnostic atheist. Haven't always been like that, but evangelical Christianity put a bad taste in my mouth. Can't believe in God, but the paranormal is a separate subject entirely. My experiences in the paranormal have lead me to look deeper into the sciences behind it... doesn't seem so pseudo to me honestly.
I'd like to direct those interested to this episode of Astonishing Legends. No, I'm not affiliated with them, but this episode really got me thinking about things I had already considered before, it just gave me more food for thought. If the "paranormal" (as we call it) is real, then there must be some kind of scientific explanation. If "telekinesis" is real, there must be some kind of scientific explanation. If any of this is real, then why not astral projection?
There's a lot of shit science doesn't understand. If the brain is an "electrical computer" as materialists like to describe it, why wouldn't it be able to manipulate magnetic fields? Not talking Michael Bay explosions and shit, but enough to levitate something or even have an OBE?
Anyways, just some random thoughts I had. Sorry if this was long-winded, should've probably just created a separate post lol.

This is a good book for astral projection in general. Also read the works of Robert Bruce and Robert Monroe. Any occult book on protection against demonic forces would be good too. Demons fear energy and faith, you are stronger than them. You are living and always have a vessel to snap back to. They can’t hurt you unless you let them

The best guidebook I have ever read for AP (and I've read quite a few) is an old Taoist book called The Secret of the Golden Flower. (The Richard Wilhelm translation)
In the Taoist conception, the goal of meditation is to progress to the point where you leave the body and "join the immortals". It lays out a clear program for how to do this, and why various techniques work, in wonderfully poetic English (well, English translated from German translated from Mandarin... but still very readable.)
I followed the instructions and got the results. It's not easy, and not instant, but no pain no gain. You can do it if you devote yourself to it. Best of luck!
Oh, and you can ignore the entire introduction by Carl Jung, just tear it out of the book. He got it totally wrong and actually made himself look very foolish & misinformed.
Note: The one thing people get stuck on with this book is what is meant by "circulation of the light", which is a key concept. It took me a while to figure out, but it is basically the body's normal energies, or maybe more specifically, mental energy and/or prana / chi. There's no English word for it, but it's the "stuff" that builds up when you meditate and fuels the chakras + AP. After a while you feel it and it's glaringly obvious, but at first I puzzled over it or thought it was symbolic. Not at all. The book is a manual and it is very precise, even if at first it seems esoteric.

If you are not aware, http://gnaural.sourceforge.net/ is a good program for making your own. It's a bit clunky but has good function.
You should know we can't hear below 20Hz. The two tones can be anything above that then, for a 4Hz beat, it could be 60+64Hz, or 600+604Hz, it's just really what sounds right for you, it doesn't matter because both will produce the 4Hz binaural tone.
I always have vivid dreams, and occasionally have lucid dreams. This product I found on Amazon really puts me over the bar. My dreams are much more vivid and I can reach lucidity more often.

People usually die because it reaches the end of their program. For some people, the program ends at 8, for some others, it ends at 80.
Sometimes, the person is so deep in their depression, that dark energies facilitate their suicide. Depending on how the case unfolded, they get help and spend a good time in a coma in an astral hospital.
Sometimes the person just frivulously kills themselves. These, are the ones who are left to endure the pain of ending their program earlier.

Not op but if you're on android, there's an app called Alarm Clock Xtreme.
There's an auto dismiss feature so it works like the op's alarm app.
With your current frustrations, I would suggest pulling back from working on an AP and just focus on mindful meditation for a while. Use guided meditations to help assist you in dealing with aggravations and other such matters.
I used the free portions of the Calm app (on Android at least) to learn how to pull my thoughts back to being in the current moment. I also suggested the app to my wife, who would jump to conclusions, have anxiety in large crowds, and overload on too many issues. The guided meditations from Calm certainly helped her drop a huge portion of anxieties and aggression.
There are also other free guided meditations on YouTube and other sites/apps. Find the one that best fits your style. Work with that until you feel comfortable enough to ignore outside stimulus and internal annoyances. I can agree that saliva building up in your mouth can be annoying but you'll need to learn to work past it to get closer to an AP. I haven't completed one yet either but I'm working on it, distractions and all.

If you come out of body and can't see, try opening your eyelids with your fingers. It works for me! I learned it from this book: The Art & Practice of Astral Projection
When we first project and we can't use a certain part of our astral body it's normal, it's like getting used to a new body - continue and you'll see, practice makes perfect! :)
Having dealt with many spiritual problems over the years, I recommend that you obtain and study this book on Psychic Self Defense. It's the best and most effective I've found in 20+ years of esoteric study and practice. It'll shed much light on the issue of astral vermin and what to do if you ever have issues with them. I'd also recommend performing some kind of purifications and banishing prior to astral work to ensure a safe environment free of unnecessary disturbances. You can do anything from putting a little lemongrass oil in some water in a mist bottle, praying over it, then spraying it around the house, to full-on ritual magick banishings such as the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram etc. The lemongrass thing is easy and surprisingly effective.

This is very important. You can only help people around you so much, but at the end, everyone has to go on the path of self-awakening on their own. I try to discuss, help, talk, explain this stuff to anyone interested, not in a pushy way, but rather in calm, take it as free knowledge way. Also, all these different testimonies from different people have one thing in common, you cannot put in words what you experience there. It's so beyond comprehention it's very hard to grasp what the true purpose of all of this is when explaining to someone who never heard about this before. Ultimately each individual has to do it on their own. Nothing will be brought to them on a plate, they may get help. but still they have to put effort to achieve achievable. You know, like in real life.

As a crystal healer I also concur.
The majority of clients I see have grounding issues. When it's severe they energy around their heads is so bloated that they energetically look like balloons connected to a flimsy string. And this string is not grounded to the earth so they are constantly floating away from reality. Being grounded helps you align your chakras so they stack vertically upon one another. And by being grounded you create a conduit to receive Mother Earth's healing energy, and also to convey Divine white light energy through your crown chakra into Mother Earth.
I wrote a crystal book and 28 pages of 346 is about the importance of the root chakra and how hematite is the ultimate crystal for grounding.
So I totally agree with this post. People seek visionary experiences without understanding the importance and value of being grounded first.

It's my pleasure. When we first begin meditation, it's common that we feel "low" as we become aware of our state of being when we look within. It can feel like a lot to deal with but if we persist and work through our personal dense energies we free up energy for ourselves, which in turn gives us more energy for our astral journeys.

When you are more aware in physical life, you will be more aware in astral life (instead of feeling like a ghost). As above, so below.
When it comes to binaural beats you really need to make your own using a sound app. You have no way of knowing what frequencies someone blended into a random video on YouTube, nor should you trust that they did it right even if they're not lying.
Case in point, I use this app on my phone. It's legit, good quality, and lets you set the frequency of binaural beat you're trying to entrain to yourself without any unknowns involved.
As for which frequencies to target, there's a lot of information out there and I highly suggest doing as much research into respectable, science-based sources on the topic as much as possible. For a decent starting point for further research you can use this site.
The last thing I wanted to point out was that some binaural frequencies can cause negative effects, such as anxiety, paranoia, agitation, racing pulse or thoughts, etc. This is the main reason why I suggest using your own application to make use of them rather than YouTube videos, which again, might make people feel uneasy because the idiot who made them didn't do enough research before-hand to know that certain gamma frequences, for example, can easily cause anxiety and panic attacks. It's also not a good idea to try to entrain multiple brainwave states at a time using multiple binaural beats. The more specific someone states their track to be in regards to this the more skeptical you should be.
In general, you should pick a target state (sa, low Theta) and just use tones for that. It's complicated, but the gist is that while our brains can have multiple brainwave frequencies running simultaneously and change these all the time, we don't know enough about them to get any benefit from them other than "generally" trying to coax our brainaves into these ranges where we do know certain things can occur.

Get yourself a dream journal if you don't already have one so that you can write down all of your experiences and draw/sketch them out, that way you can always look back at them. I'm using this one and quite like it.

Journeys out of the body- Good book, it details his first unintentional experiences with AP and he takes a somewhat scientific approach to it.
Far Journeys- Goes beyond his initial experiences and spends a lot of the book trying to help a consciousness break a reincarnation loop.
Ultimate Journey: Takes his journey into what he calls the null zone and does a lot of introspective stuff. I find a lot of his books start off relatively normal and end up really far out there.
Astral Dynamics by Robert Bruce- Basically a guide to what to expect when you're projecting. Every detail that you think you wanted to know about and more.
Navigating the Out of Body Experience by Graham Nicholls- I really enjoyed this one. Tons of techniques to cater to your personal style as well as a lot of ways he reconciles what he sees with modern theoretical physics.
Consciousness Beyond the Body: Evidence and Reflections by Alexander De Foe- Takes a completely scientific look at AP and is written for someone who is more scientifically minded. Also it's free on Amazon
Since you're already listening to Monroe's tapes, you should also read his trilogy of books. I am continually intrigued by how many people in the AP community are unaware of these texts and the information that they contain about the nature of reality and our purpose on earth. They are pretty much foundational to the understanding of the AP phenomenon. It's almost as if there's a mass psychic obstacle between the world and his books.They should be featured in the "Astral Projection Manifesto" sticky post in neon lights, yet neither he nor they are even mentioned.

I’m married with a daughter, but I’m a loner by nature. I think that’s why I enjoy projecting into the future, deep space, and especially the far future. You have to be someone who can psychologically handle be completely and utterly alone. So, I don’t tend to make friends wherever I go like some people - my wife for example.

I’m not sure how the concept of AP would conflict with mainstream Christian theology. There are a lot of thou shalt nots in the OT and NT, but I don’t recall any that would cover this.
Now, there are a lot of preachers who would insist that it’s the work of the devil or something, but there isn’t really anything in the actual scripture that would back that up, that I’m aware of. Just general warnings about his deceptions.
The Bible has a lot of stuff in it, but no religious text covers every type of spiritual event. Sometimes you’re free to come to your own conclusions, or you can examine the texts that address your experience. In your case, classical Tibetan Buddhism would be a good place to start.
I’m surprised no one else has mentioned this but Dolores Canon has written a book on her communication with Jesus in her book Jesus and the Essenes which I haven’t read personally, but I’ve read a few of her other books and cannot recommend her work enough.

If you do, go to sleep with a true intent to be available to assist, the beings of light will come to take you there. If you don't AP, you'll need to learn how to do it first, then you need to learn how to manipulate energy, this is necessary when you find them, you'll have to project energy around these people so this others beings can take care of it.
To start, get Barbara Ann Brennan book Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy and start practicing.
The only way to control it is through practice, like anything. First step is to learn how to astral project voluntarily instead of spontaneously. The next step is to learn how to control your astral body and energy while in a projected state.

That definitely sounds like AP. Its not exactly the same as normal reality but its like a combination of reality and imagination to a certain degree. It feels hyper realistic in general. what's interesting about your story is that you have what seems like a greater variety of experiences that are each a part of the goal than some people that have had a simple straightforward AP. So - reframing here- maybe you are MORE capable of this than a lot of other people although your path is different from others' path. So maybe the answer is just keep doing every thing you are already doing.
Three Pillars of Zen by Kapleau says that zazen can cause AP, but that it is a distraction from the main goal, which is seeing into your True Nature: Kensho, or the enlightenment event.
I cannot recommend DMT as there are too many stories of encounters with hostile entities. Psilocybin may have some insight for you, or LSA and those are legal avenues.
Have you read any Eckhart Tolle? Similarly to Kapleau, he teaches that seeing into one's true nature, and abiding in the Now, is the highest course.
Alternatively, perhaps there is a teaching for you in this frustration. If the purpose of life is to LIVE it, and living is done by consciously engaging in the world of form, you are overemphasizing AP. What if by engaging more fully in life, emphasizing your bodily existence, you might satisfy your soul's plan for this incarnation. Is there some activity or goal that you are neglecting? Has you life gotten out of balance? Was there some unfulfilled childhood dream you have abandoned?

You should read The Phase by Michael Raduga. It helped me sort things out and provides you with a plan once you project into either AP or LD...or anything in the the phase.
Yeah that is the most confusing, when you have no prior experience or understanding. That's when people go to doctors / psychs and that is not generally going to help, it's like trying to medicate away puberty. You can do it, sure, but you don't want to stunt your growth like that. Better to roll with it, and come out the other side a more evolved person. Of course not everyone can do that. For me it was in college and I had to take an entire year off where I scraped by as a waiter in order to just exist and attempt to process everything that was happening. I'm lucky they still let me graduate. I can't even imagine if I had kids...
I actually didn't understand what was happening to me until over 10 years later. At the time I had very little help and even though my parents were spiritually-minded, I'm pretty sure they just thought I just couldn't handle the academic stress or something. Sigh... none of my friends were helpful... It was really isolating. Until I started meditating I didn't feel a lot in my spine initially (it was mostly just heat) so it took years and a ton of library books for me to figure out that it was a spiritual awakening, by that time the energy was all the way up into my crown which is incidentally also when I had my first AP and came across this sub.
For the woman I interviewed it was very destabilizing but ultimately positive, she actually wrote a very nice book about it. btw, that's amazing about the owls, I wonder if they are sensitive.
This is related to a kind of meditative prayer or dialog I sometimes have with myself and the spirit world: that if we're capable of interphasing with all kinds of ecstatic, aberrant, anomalous and transpersonal information, why are we usually incapable of downloading insights, epiphanies, or revelations that could result in pragmatic benefits for life - new cures, new technologies, new ways of conducting ourselves.
Becoming a hyperdimensional Sri Yantra made of light intersecting itself with rotating tetrahedrons is incredible, but if we can temporarily lens into such spaces, why are most of us seemingly incapable of deriving practical knowledge that could improve suffering?
Contrariwise, many improvements upon the world are synchronized or attuned to 'accidental' spaces (e.g. LSD's discovery), rather than focused deliberation. A relevant book is Serendipity in Science.

Jonas Ridgeway has chapter called Astral Jukebox in his book Exploring Your Inner Reality: A Guidebook to Astral Protection and the Out-of-Body Experience, which is an excellent book by the way. The Astral Jukebox chapter was mind blowing and probably my favorite chapter of any astral projection book, about hearing music while projecting.

The History of God by Guy Steven Needler goes into a lot of detail about the (reportedly) structure of reality in terms of dimensions, frequencies, densities and such. The book is quite excellent I must admit. Extremely unique and new information brought forth to humanity in that book and his next books.
The essence of the book is that he is able to communicate with the "Source Entity" that created this multiverse. He is also able to communicate with the Origin, the creator of our Source Entity (and others). The author is also an engineer, so he has a reasonable basis for communicating about it.
The answer is that each Source Entity have created their own 'volume' of creation in different ways to explore themselves (Origin wanted to explore the Self) through experience and evolution. They have.
Our Source Entity claims our dimensions are described as 12x12x12x3, each number describing a different component, but the result of that multiplication giving the number of discrete "levels" of reality. Basically the dimensions are in a sense inflated by frequency bands. Other environments have other configurations.

The Gateway Experience is great for understanding focus states. Here is a free link. The easiest way to have an OBE is to train yourself to stay still upon awakening and mentally expect to exit your body and it will happen immediately. Here is the full description. Please let me know how it goes!!
1- just set the intention to travel or teleport there , intention is everything. (Works with finding people too)
2- All you have to do is just think about your body and you’ll pop back in it. And no nobody dies from astral projecting. Remember fear will always keep you from projecting.
3- These “demons” you see in the astral realm aren’t demons even tho they might look like it. They’re just beings or entities trying to feed off your precious energy or “light”. How do they do that ? By trying to extract fear from you or by making themselves look like an attractive person you may know or not know and trying to have sex with you. Really they are harmless and weak when they know you don’t fear them. And no it’s impossible to take your soul because you are the soul.
4- Theres nothing to fear about astral projection, it’s a beautiful and NATURAL human practice. I’ve heard a lot over the years about how astral projection is dangerous and scary but after about 5 years of ap I can say it’s all bs. I would start off with meditation. I know most people don’t like meditation like I did In the past but it will make your ap way better in every way.
5- no although you can teleport while you astral project.
Robert Monroe’s “the gateway experience” is so effective at getting people to astral project it costs about 2-3k I believe for all the audios but here is a free link to them. Although you shouldn’t go into it expecting anything just accept and go with the flow. I recommend doing as much researches you can about it. :).

I find that a lot of the YouTube stuff labeled "astral projection" has music that I find very distracting. I like Tom Campbell's binaural beats, or you can go to the MyNoise website to play some consistent binaurals. I find them rather hypnotic and relaxing.
A lot of good advice here. I would also suggest reading The Astral Codex. Its volume of information has a variety of practices and helpful information in relation to the issues you face. It also advises on how to build a practice regime which is very helpful for getting results. Don't give up. All of us faced similar or the same issues at some point.
It is certainly some interesting material, and the history of those who put it together is fascinating as well. I'm not sure what to think of it sometimes, but I've been trying to find ways to make the info more accessible.

It could distract you, try earplugs, hearing protectors (better) or Simply Noise which can blanket out other sounds. These devices are also really good.

A few things to consider:
1) You know how some living things have certain types of cells in their brains that can sense the earth's magnetic field? It's entirely possible that in order to perceive certain energy frequencies, that you need to either possess certain types of cells/neurons or, if you do have those cells, that you need to quiet your mind enough to allow your conscious mind to sense the output from those neurons.
2) You can use eye covers / sleep mask, if you're worried about natural light interfering. You can also try to do this in complete darkness, in the middle of a moonless night. 4) Part of keeping an open mind about Astral Projection is that unless you have absolute proof of anything, that it might indeed be BS. Keeping an open mind about things means that, yes, you should doubt everything and believe only genuine experiences (it's also in the rules of this sub).
Oof I think I know what you mean. I used to have something like that in my back. Just a random, tight spasm on the left, lower side whenever I tried to relax.
If yours is like mine, it could be trauma. Once I released the trauma, treatments (like massage and exercise) actually worked lol.
Whether your spasm is trauma-induced or not though, I bet that a gua sha stone would work as your treatment.

So what I'm doing is this:
I take Melatonin, a natural sleep hormone to promote rest. I'm guessing you are in the US, and if so you can purchase this at any pharmacy OTC. YMMV with the dose. Play with that and find a dose that promotes rest pretty quickly.
I take Huperzine A about 3 nights a week to promote my dream cycles.
Read up and watch videos about Robert Monroe. He consulted with the CIA and much of that is now declassified. He developed the techniques that the CIA explored. I don't know if there is bogus information out there on his studies, but I strictly stuck to the articles and documents on the declassified US gov't websites.
Ok, that is where I stopped researching and started to explore. I found that meditation at bedtime helped, but my first approach was to achieve AP through lucid dreaming since I had been so good with that. But that didn't work.
So I started focusing more on the meditation and that is where I found my 2 (brief) experiences. I can flat out say that it wasn't a lucid dream. My sensory experience was off the chart. I have 1-2 lucid dreams a week and they are fun because I know it is a dream. This scared me because it wasn't a dream. I was more aware of everything in that moment than I am when awake and after drinking 3 cups of coffee.
My pathway might not be the same as yours. I'm getting ready to go to sleep as we speak. It is 12am here in the CST. I've got my iPad and ear buds ready to listen to binaural beats and see where that takes me.
I'm on a journey right now. I know this is something real, and something beyond me. I'm going to add you to my reddit contacts and let you know if I have a breakthrough.
I'm sorry you're struggling with this and again, I really hope you find the support you need and the answers you seek in a tangible fashion. I don't think we'll ever get to a point of concrete evidence of astral projection, god, higher self, the spirit world, etc.
I did think of a book that may help you to connect in a way that might be more physical since I think that's what you're looking for based on your comments. It's called Writing Down Your Soul and it could be the ticket for you to uncover your own proof ie. knowing that it's real.

I don't think we need to resort to any speculative supernatural mechanisms to explain this. Playing media while you sleep, let alone media intended to induce altered states of consciousness, is bound to interfere with the body's circadian rhythm and sleep cycle. So naturally you'll wake up feeling less rested, with all the symptoms of mild sleep deprivation you mentioned.
I had a similar experience in the first few months after learning to AP. I was over-eager/greedy for "experiences" and started to regularly fall asleep listening to Hemi-Sync tracks and/or Gateway exercises immediately prior to sleep. What worked for me was the following:
- Prioritize proper sleep hygiene and discipline/consistency.
- No Hemi-Sync or Gateway directly before bed. Practice AP skills in the morning rather than at night (after getting a full night's rest) via the WBTB method.
- Limit myself to no more than two [intentional] APs per week.
- Put greater emphasis on my core meditation practice.
