If your looking for a car interface app, Car dashdroid is really good. The developer is really active in the G+ community and updates the app very often.
There are apps that make this pretty easy. Car Dashdroid is one I like, AutoMate is another.
I am a Google Voice user with an S7.
I used it for a few weeks and then went back to Car dashdroid, which solves every problem listed above.
I've been using Car Dashroid lately. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.cardashdroid
It's a really great home replacement that triggers when connected to the car's Bluetooth system that gives me a few big buttons for apps and some quick settings. It even has a speedometer.
If anyone is looking for really good carmode app that's better than android auto, try out Car Dashdroid. I use it everyday and its just awesome.
I use Car DashDroid and yours looks so similar! I wonder if that's how they got the idea to create that app.
Anyways, nice work!
I use this for a long time now and it works easy. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.cardashdroid
Once I put my phone on the car mount, a nfc-tag activates bluetooth - which triggsers to load the CarDashdroid"-App. The last step happens with the following app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.myklos.btautoconnect
I don't really know much about templates, but I could walk you through my setup, if you wanted.
When I connect to Bluetooth, tasker:
... And the solution is Car Dashdroid. Seriously, this app is the best. I don't get why more people aren't using it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.cardashdroid
I like Car dashdroid

I like Car Dash Droid as an alternative. Have used it for a long time in the same way.

I'm using Car DashDroid. Has anyone used this app for comparison.
Thanks for the app!
I think Car DashDroid does all of this and looks very similar!
Looks like it's Car Dashboard. I think I'll be getting it!
I installed my 2013 N7 in my car last summer. In the fall I changed it to a 2012 N7 (GSM version), so now I have mobile data all the time.
I am currently waiting for warmer weather to finalize the install (backup camera, clean up wiring, some switches, etc). Right now it works awesome for in-car nav and audio, but occasionally needs some fiddling (see below).
I am using a Sony MEX-BT3100P Head Unit, a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 to retain steering wheel controls, and the Sony App Remote on the Nexus 7. The one downfall with this setup, is you need to interact with the Sony Head Unit to fully link the app and HU controls every time you start the car. I got around this by running an Arduino that simulates pushing the correct button (simply grounding out a pin). This works, but can be a pain. If bluetooth connectivity is lost for some reason, I either have to reboot the Arduino, restart the car, or pull my dash out to fix the link from the head unit. And if I hit the volume on the steering wheel before the link between the HU and tablet app is made, its messes up the link, and I have to yank the dash. But I may try and switch to this method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkVJh8rhYWU (I just found this in the last five minutes, pretty excited!).
Phone use is awesome. I have the HU linked to both my phone and the tablet. The Sony App can do some half ass phone controls, but not well. I use Tablet Talk to receive & make calls, see texts, etc. It auto pauses music and then switches to the phone input when any calls come in or go out, and switches back to the music (either tuner or BT Audio) and resumes the music automatically.
Let me know if you have any questions. There is alot that goes into making a system that works reliably. I have come to the conclusion mine will never be "done", there are just too many cool things to do with it.
Also, I have tried several different Auto "front ends", and this one has done everything I want, developer is still active, and there is a thread on XDA where is discusses requests with users.
I use Car dashdroid, but it's nothing but a home screen with big buttons and not a lot of tools.

That's not to say that the writeup you linked doesn't have something new to offer. But indeed, Car Mode is a very crowded space.
Again, this was probably an excellent exercise for someone doing UX work, but part of that is acknowledging what already exists in the marketplace, as well as what comes as default behavior on devices.
The fact that the idea of Car Mode is a crowded space could possibly mean that no one has truly nailed the UX yet, as each offers some features that are better than others. Keep at it.
I use Car dashboard: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.cardashdroid
Prefer it over AutoMate.
I've recently been testing a few trying to see which I like best. The 3 I tried were:
Car dashdroid - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.cardashdroid&hl=en
Drivemode - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drivemode.android&hl=en
Automate - https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.bitspice.automate
(Automate is still in beta testing so you have to join the G+ community for it to install.)
I liked them all, but I finally decided Automate is the one that's right for me.
As my Trigger task setup is quite simple and mainly geared only for getting my phone set up to my liking for the car I have the task repetition set to previous task.
My full setup (for car use) is: 'on Air Dock tag read': disable wifi, enable bluetooth, set display timeout to never, set ringer volume to 6, enable auto-brightness
After this the phone connects to my car bluetooth and on connect Car Dashdroid runs. I have Headset Menu installed so that media doesn't start auto playing (very annoying!) on bluetooth connect. However media does start playing on any notification (chat, SMS etc.) (again, very annoying!).
When I turn off the car bluetooth disconnects and I have a Trigger task 'on my car bluetooth disconnect': set display timeout to 1 min, set ringer volume to 3, disable bluetooth, stop media playback, enable wifi, launch Soft Lock Screen
