The good 'ol Crossy Road and Catapult King are my favorite portrait game.

Crossy Road

The Crossy Road is inspired by the popular riddle joke “Why did the chicken cross the road?“. The main idea of the game is to cross busy roads without getting killed by dangerous obstacles. Players earn coins when they watch ads, buy them with real money, collect them during the game, or complete tasks. They can then use these coins to unlock new characters. The game hooks players with endless tasks that are simple but challenging enough to keep them going.

I don't think that simplicity is the problem, rather quality. Something about your initial look makes it feel unpolished to me. You could make the background a plain but textured colour, such as a glossy white.

If you consider Crossy Road as a model for what you're doing (i.e. cosmetic updates), their initial offering is still very detailed. I think people simply like to experience different looks - so they'll still want to upgrade </opinion>

Try Crossy Road or Alto's Adventure both are beautiful and lots of fun. Also loved T.H.I.S. - it is more of a puzzle.
