You mentioned not being able to read the resistor colour codes easily - you might find the Android app ElectroDroid quite useful for helping. I use it all the time and it contains a wealth of resources and calculators.
Best app I know of for Android is ElectroDroid. To list a few of the features, it has:
Calculators
Pin-Out Diagrams
Resources
and so much more. It's worth checking out

If you have an android device, you can get Electrodoc it's super useful when you need any information about connectors or simple electric related calculations, here are some pictures.
If you're ever having trouble and you have an android phone Electrodoc has a resistor lookup tool that's really helpful and will tell you if it's a standard resistor. I find that helpful for making sure I read the resistor right.
I'd inspire myself in this awesome Android app: Electrodoc
I use it from time to time when I need something like pinout to some connector, calculate something or other stuff.
For anyone studying anything related to electrical/electronics, ElectroDroid is a really helpful tool. Lots of calculators and useful info.
I use ElectroDroid on Android, its really helpful in a pinch.
