I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but I've been using Flat Style Colored Bars and I think that might fit your needs.
I downgraded to kitkat for flat style status bar (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bocharov.xposed.fscb&hl=en) the ability to change the individual DPI on apps. Lollipop was fine, but the stock DPI is ridiculous.
Out of the 1.3million on the playstore? Hard to tell but if you use xposed, I recommend this module, then every app will be tinted.
I used the Xposed module Flat Style Colored Bars to make the statusbar white-grey-ish and the icons black.
You can also use the Xposed module Gravitybox to make the icons black (make sure to get the one for your android version). This option has limitation, though, like it doesn't color some icons, and the status bar color is black in some apps so you can't see the icons.
Both options require root and xposed framework.
You can use Flat Style Colored Bars and set both the status bar and icons to transparent.
It's a module for Xposed framework, Flat Style Colored Bars
