In this game you program robots to do certain commands and then battle in an arena with other players or computer opponents. Not sure how active it is anymore, but it sounds like what you are looking for.

Game I played a while back. Basically you program your own bots based on certain conditions and get them to fight it out against pre-built ai. Maybe it could help give some insight.

Gladiabots did something similar, with a visual programming system easy to learn but a bit complicated to debug. It's not roundbased and movement control is based on approaching objectives and fleeing from enemies

Gladiabots is quite different to SpaceChem and Lightbot in gameplay terms, but it scratches the same itch. You program the AI of robots using a drag and drop interface in order to win fights.
It's not exactly free to play in the traditional sense. It's more like a demo with an optional one-off purchase to unlock a few additional things.

Program your bots to fight in groups against other bots as well as complete tasks given (within some time limit).
The tutorials are in itself very interesting if you like simple modular programming using flow charts. Just simple conditions that when clubbed together becomes quite powerful. Will make you come back and try to improve those logic flow charts to do things even better. You don't feel restricted.

This is a great asynchronous game, though I can't remember if you can choose your opponents.

I like programming games. Here are few :
- Gladiabot, a game where you program a skirmish battle strategy 4 v 4. Very easy (block programming) and very fun, especially if you play with a friend. I recommend this to anyone. You can try it for free on android
- Colobot GOLD, a free game where you program bots to help you colonize a planet. Nice to learn programming (java), especially concurrent programming. You can load 2 programs and play "coding battles" with no human interventions. I recommend this if you want to learn programming. (It's a very old game, graphics are out-of-date, but the game is still fun)
- Screeps is even deeper : like Age of Empire, as a persistent MMO, where you code your IA in live, in javascript (nodejs). I don't recommend this if you are a coding beginner.
All theses game are (like factorio) not compatible with real life, and require a brain.
