the max brightness is a software/driver feature. the 6p lacks samsung's overdrive autobrightness, so it only hits 350 nits. OP3 probably couldn't afford to buy it from sammy and stay under budget. a custom kernel with the overdrive puts a 6p as bright as a note 5 per other users comments in the below thread. It's bright as fuck, perfectly visible in direct sun. i am sure the same custom kernel tweak will get the OP3 up to 500+ nits. i have it on my 6P and Tab S 8.4, so it works across most amoled panels, even older ones like the motorola and 6P.

If you have root (and a supported kernel like Franco or ElementalX) you can make it closer to about 350 nits with this
Explanation: (most) amoled displays have a "high brightness mode" which activates in automatic brightness mode when there is enough light. But a lot of phones that aren't from Samsung with amoled displays don't actually utilize it. Including the 6P (probably because AOSP doesn't have anything for it?)
double tap the widget for automatic mode, or set up a tasker profile using this
EX kernel manger - display color calibration, High brightness mode w/ optional autobrightness that kicks the HBM in sunlight, gives the 6P Note 5 brightness in direct sunlight. dev flar2 also made a paid app to have this mode kick automatically without tasker.
Xposed modules - Amplify and/or power nap - block screen off wakelocks.
bubbleupnp - xposed module that can cast video, music, pics, etc.. from network storage. only app i've found that can cast everything from NAS.
flat style bar indicators - change status bar icons, size, spacing, alignment, color, etc... great for avoiding burn in on amoled too.
Unicon - change app icons system wide. apps will show your chosen icon in settings, in app list views, toast messages, etc...
Related: High Brightness Mode and EX Kernel Manager have also been updated to add support for the OnePlus 6. :)
have you rooted yet? if so, try installing the high brightness mode app and see if it works on the OP3 OLED. worked on the stock kernel with motorolas and samsung, curious if it works out the box + root on the OP3. it mimic's samsungs overdrive brightness when direct sunlight is detected and makes a huge difference on my 6P and Tab S 8.4.

cool tweak not enough people know about is custom kernels offer a high brightness mode for the Amoled screen that significantly boosts max brightness. i know EX kernel has it, along with an app to have it kick in automatically when bright ambient light is detected. It fixed the main gripe i had with my 6P, and works on my Tab S 8.4 as well.
BTW the screens aren't the issue
For whatever reason Google hasn't enabled the High Brightness Mode of the OLEDs

Unfortunely there's no way on Nexus/Pixels to enable HBM without root and a a custom kernel with HBM
You can get this app to enable high brightness mode. It's a hidden setting of the panel to make the screen even brighter in sunlight. It makes a pretty big difference IMO, and with HBM enabled its one of the brighter phones you can get. Scroll down to brightness in this xda article. You risk burning the panel out quicker if its on static images for hours a day though.
if you're rooted you can use the high brightness mode app from the EX kernel dev. have it on my Tab S 8.4 and it helps out a decent amount. it adds the overdrive function you see on newer samsung amoleds like the S6 and Note 5 that hit 600+ nits.
Playstore link has an auto mode that will kick in the high brightness mode when direct sunlight is detected, regardless of you having manual or autobrightness in regular system settings enabled.
It's probably just setting it to max (manual) brightness. I don't use that app and am not familiar with where that function would be so I can't test it myself.
Flar2, a kernel dev and app dev (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.hbmwidget&hl=en_US&gl=US) says custom kernels are required on Pixels to manually enable HBM.
Hey this app will let you adjust the point at which High Brightness Mode kicks in. It works on my rooted 3XL and the stock S10e.

Yes, but it requires root as far as I know.
There's an app called High Brightness Mode by flar2 (link). It's a paid app.
Alternatively, you can install some 3rd party ROMs that have this functionality built-in for free.
I'm pretty sure flar2 will update his High Brightness Mode app and give support for the Pixel XL, after all even the Nexus 6P works, I've been using it for a long time for viewing the screen in direct sunlight.
High brightness mode works really well. My recommendation would be to download the official widget. You can then quickly toggle it on and off based on need. If you double tap it, it enables automatic mode which will automatically enable high brightness mode when you're in a brightly lit environment. I've been using it in this way for the past 6 months or so, and don't currently have any burn in.
yep, no custom kernel needed either, just root on the N6. there is an autobrightness+toggle controller app for it on the playstore, though it's effectiveness varies depending on the device. it's a crazy difference on my 6P, noticeable but not as drastic on my Tab S 8.4. I've read it's not a massive difference on the OP3 as well.
The app works on a lot of amoled devices with root only, the custom kernel is only required on the 6P. It basically brings samsung's overdrive contrast setting when autobrightness is enabled and bright light is detected. plays nice with tasker too for automation purposes. I use it for probably 15-20 minutes a day for 9 months or so, no burn in issues. i wouldn't use it for more than 10 minutes at once though just to be safe.
make sure to get the high bright autobrightness app, it kicks in outside with bright light even if you don't use android's built in autobrightness.

it works on most amoled devices. i have a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 running CM13 and it works on the CM kernel. really makes a big difference.
It does, as do a bunch of loan and real estate apps.

if you are interested in improving the brightness, the elemental X kernel has a high brightness mode that makes a huge difference. it does the same thing as samsung's S6/S7/Note 5 when in autobrightness and sunlight is detected, overdriving the panel at the expense of accuracy. The Dev has a companion app to make it kick automatically when bright ambient light is detected, even if you use manual brightness. noticed he added OP3 support in a recent update changelog. contacted the XDA reviewer and he is going to test HBM out and write an article with results soon.
it made my 6P go from useless in direct sunlight to retina searing bright. video is old, you don't have to manually toggle or use tasker like in the video. app now includes an autobrightness setting.
Clicking on the title will bring you back to the comments page. Put it in the body of the post so it's accessible.
You might be able to get your panel even brighter. I use this on OP5;

> • I don't know how to lay down my phone with out scratching the camera
Try using a case which cancels the camera bump
> • Wifi keeps turning on automatically and connects with "free" wifi where I have to log in to use internet
There is an option to turn on wifi when near saved networks, which is hidden in WiFi settings.
> • note app doesent show every word I type
You could try a different note app?
> • I can't replace the stupid Google feed with Shelf
Try using a custom launcher, like CPL or Lawnchair with the plugins
> • no headphone jack
No solution to this other than the adapter
> • usb c adapter for my headphone keeps opening the contact app
No idea
> • I can't uninstall most of the Google apps
You need root, and then a Magisk Module which debloats the phone
> • no toggle for dark mode
This is a feature for Android 11, as it was included in the developer previews on the 8 Pro
> • no option to activite dark mode automatically during the night
This is included in the above update
> • sleep modes turns skin black and white but turns of the blue light filter
Can you explain this please? is it on videos, or photos? or where?
> • the game mode is anyoing as hell and I don't know how to permanently turn it of
I think you need to remove games from the Game Mode's list in order to prevent auto trigger
> • sometimes I have to type in the pin instead of using fingerprint even tho I didn't restarted my device
It's a safety feature when randomly you'll be asked for a pin, not only just after restart.
> • screen is to bright when in its dark
You can download a screen dimmer app, which overlays a dim layer on whatever is on your screen to help with brightness, but image quality might suffer.
> • screen is not bright enough when the sun shines
I believe there's an app made by flar2 which help to trigger a built in high-brightness mode, but you need root for it and also, it's a paid app. here's the link
> • I want vibration for notifications and sound for calls. (I don't know if this is possible)
Already in comments
> • screen protector came with tiny air bubbles
It's OnePlus fault, you can try to apply your own to it, or a tempered glass one.
> • no notification led
There are apps which can use the camera cut-out as a notification led, ArcLighting for example, but it doesn't work flawlessly
> • the standard case lets dusk between phone and case wich causes scratches
Same issue with different models, you could try a different case.
> • I don't get used to the huge bezel
Personal preference
> • annoying Google voice assistant is everywhere. Do people actually use it?
There is a way to disable it within the menu. Search for Assist in Settings, and then select None. It's extremely useful when driving, because you don't need to touch the phone at all to do things, or when you just can't touch it, because you're in the middle of something.
There you go bud. I definitely recommend rooting as it does NOT void your warranty and you get a lot more control over what happens on your device.

Yup, it works great.
I'm using the High Brightness Mode widget.

I love my 6p! Build quality is great with one minor flaw (later). Love the camera, its HDR. Love dual front speakers. Love 1440p screen. I do not love the screen colors though (AMOLED issues), but I have aid for this (custom kernel with KCAL - Advanced Color control built in). Rapid charging is fantastic but battery banks may be expensive (USB type C). The only concern I have against it is no gyroscope on camera module. This and the fact that the phone just has a frame bent by volume button. It does and you can't do anything about it. Not noticeable under Spigen case, really. But to be honest I don't even make any videos :)
Seriously think your choice through. Note 7 may have a lot of gimmicky functions but you have to remember those are just gimmicks. Unless you are getting phone specifically for those functions. Comparing Samsung and Nexus, software wise, Nexus just wins. I love the simplicity of unbloated OS and I went bit farther and put completely debloated (even google apps, you download what you want and what you need) Chroma Rom on it. I have put ElementalX kernel on top but specifically 1.16 version (IDK, tested different versions and this one was the best in terms of CPU usage and power draw), turned touchboost off and activated DarkSpice 7.5 governor on both mini and large clusters (it might not make any sense for you but after a bit of fiddling with this stuff you will be fine). My phone stays cool, it gets bit hot when I play games that take full CPU power (ePSXe emulator with OpenGL plugin on native device resolution 1440p).
INHO, you should get 6P. Wait for Pixel to release and get 6p after, it will drop in price significantly. Add tempered glass and Spigen Rugged case (I know, it's not slim and it does not show that sexy back of 6p but it really protects device - I had several drops and I still am happy owner of intact phone) to the basket.

Resources time !
For rooting and unlocking bootloader
XDA rooting and unlocking bootloader
Don't bother rooting at this point! Just unlock bootloader, flash TWRP (2.7.8.x ! versions 3.x + might not work) and choose you custom rom. There is plethora ! Pure Nexus is most popular but I find Chroma most proficient for my needs. I don't any weird stuff on my phone, I just want it to be mine. But hey, it's Android. You can do whatever you wish to do!
ElementalX kernel *Remember to download EX kernel manager from PlayStore (it allows you to change touchboost, governorn, cpu clocks, screen colors etc.)
After flashing rom and kernel (kernel isn't necessary) don't forget to flash lastest SuperSU app (https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/) (it grants permission for root) .
High Brightness Widget from PlayStore (from kernel author) costs 1 buck and it is great for outdoors (Nexus 6p has Amoled screen while Samsung S7 has Super Amoled - bit brighter. This widget enables the high intensity of brightness on screen.
There is also this thing called Advanced Interactive Governor Tweaks. Those are basically governors for CPU to tell it how to behave accordingly in different situations. Best for me is DarkSpice 7.5 and it is built in EX manager app (CPU, Governor options, Load - choose and apply on boot. Remember to go back and scroll down to find Touchboost and disable it and highlight "on/off" switch-it ensures the option sticks after boot).
Any other stuff, head to XDA !
Should you find anything that is not clear out of my grammar, please bear in mind I am no English native speaker. I am trying to do my best but I just finished long few day shift in my work and am trying to relax with bourbon. I might have relaxed too much already, pardon me. And cheers!
if u have rooted and running EX https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.hbmwidget&hl=no
Nice! I recommend the widget if you don't have it as well.

A quick google yielded this app to enable high brightness mode: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.hbmwidget&hl=en
have you tried a custom kernel like EX with high brightness mode? Makes a world of difference on my 6p and Tab S 8.4, and will kick in automatically only when in bright outdoor sunlight.
