Been using a similar app called Last App Switcher for a while now. It works pretty well and seems less intrusive. The features are not identical though. Gonna try this one out and see which is more useful/reliable for my needs.
Edit: Just found Easy App Switcher. I already like it better than either. Plus it's free.
Been using this for quite a while. Really recommend it. Being able to switch back and forth between two apps with a touch is really helpful.
Very similar to this one.
Last App Switcher does something similar, no root or custom ROM required. Swipe up from the home button and instead of opening Google Now, it will open the previous app you were using. Fairly smooth. I would imagine it interferes with Now on Tap for those on Marshmallow, however.
I'm on 4.4.4 with Republic and an unlocked bootloader through sunshine. I used to use xposed but haven't bothered since a fresh flash and finding Last App Switcher which replaced a big part of what I used it for.
Found a little workaround -
Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abhi.lastappswitcher
Open it up and at the very top select shortcut instead of overlay. Also scroll down the settings and turn OFF "Home screen application is excluded..."
Also would recommend turning off the persistent notification.
Then, at the end of any of your relevant tasks, add this action:
Launch App [ Package/App Name:Last App Switcher:SwitchTaskActivity Data: Exclude From Recent Apps:Off Always Start New Copy:Off ]
You can get to the "SwitchTaskActivity" by long-pressing on Last App Switcher when selecting the app from within Tasker for the Launch App activity.

It has 3 per edge. You can select them under "More Hotspots" menu. It has 3 options :
- 8 Hotspots (Default)
- 12 Hotspots (Straight Swipe)
- 12 Hotspots (Diagonal Swipe)
But you're right with the previous / last app, it doesn't have it. (Maybe depending on the current rom ?).
Before I switched to a custom rom, I used All In One Gestures with LAS, it worked pretty well :
Edit: I agree with the permission, don't know why they require that.
I haven't done this yet, so just theoretical for now, but there is an app called LAS (last app switcher) that can be triggered by shortcut or with Tasker by executing an intent. Make a task, use Tasker app factory to make it an app, then Assistant custom command to call the Tasker App Factory app.
Just activate the shortcut for this app and it'll do that:
I use LAS: Last App Switcher.
You can put it in shortcut mode, which makes the overlay disappear.
LAS, for quickly returning to the previous app.
there's an app that's actually called "last app switcher" that does what you want. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abhi.lastappswitcher
Install xposed framework and then get the xMIUI module. Or simply root your device and install LAS Last App Switcher from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abhi.lastappswitcher
The carrier should not have the option to use a chip enabled card since it's not working fully working with Marshmallow anyways. LAS: Last App Switcher - Free - Rating: 90/100 - Search for 'textra' on the Play Store. ------. ^Source ^Code ^| ^Feedback/Bug ^report. http://imgur.com/UfcRWVZ.

LAS: Last App Switcher! - basicly small overlay button that switches between last two apps you have used.
