My app is at 10-50k downloads, with 500+ ratings avg 4.67, but it's not always a smooth sail. Here are what I learned:
Hacker News https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.hidroh.materialistic and if u are into RSS, definitely spaRSS which I use and I'm heavily satisfied with and is waaaaaayy better than poorly done and slow Feedly https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.etuldan.sparss
This is going to depend on what kind of news you are looking for, but I like reading from Hacker News. It is mostly tech oriented. I like to think of it as Reddit without the drama and memes. I have been using the app Materialistic to read from.
Personally:
HackerNews (To make the site bearable, use Materialistic for mobile and the HNES for Chrome)
Physical subscription to MIT Technology Review magazine
Twitter - If you follow the right people (Martin Fowler, Jeff Atwood, Mark Reinhold, etc.) their insights into upcoming trends will help keep you up to date on what's new and interesting... usually.
Reddit - /r/technology, /r/coding, /r/compsci, etc.
IRC - just hang out in the channels related to the language and technology you're interested in
Meetup.com - Go to tech meetups and listen to talks. Usually they have free pizza and beer
Youtube - Coding Tech, Computerphile, The Coding Train, Fun Fun Function, Derek Banas
I'm currently using Materialistic.
Not as feature complete as Sync, but it works fine for what I do.
This is the one I use, though its not very similar to Relay, it has the same material design

Try Materialistic.
There are already a lot of options available. Considering the limited features and simplicity HN offers, why do you believe it's worth devs time developing another app? To put in contrast: Relay offers something that is widely different from other Reddit apps.

Have you tried Materialistic? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.hidroh.materialistic
For Android I have been using "Materialistic - Hacker News" for sometime now. You can give it a try.

The bot found the wrong Materialistic. Whoops!
