This is what I use on my sheild https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explusalpha.NesEmu
I would recommend any of the emulators by him. https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Robert+Broglia
Also if you want to try before you buy I recommend using the snes one because its free and the interface is all the same.
On the play store ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explusalpha.NesEmu&hl=en_US) the most recent update is:
WHAT'S NEW
* Fix external storage detection code from 1.5.41 on Samsung devices
I wonder if there is a similar problem with the ShieldTV and the author is unaware.
I use NES.EMU and play a English patched Rom of 4 Nin Uchi Mahjong. It has its flaws, but I play it nearly every day. Plus you can play any old Nintendo game using NES.EMU.

BINGO! NES.emu, and the Moga Power Pro for the win. Best toy $ I've spent in the past year in terms of bang for the buck.
In a web browser, go to play.google.com, then look up the emulator. In the address bar, whatever is after the "id=" is the sandbox folder name. In the above example, the URL will read "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.explusalpha.NesEmu" Hope that helps!
Best front end is ARC Browser. It can be a front end for many apps including retroarch.

All of the above work with ARC Browser. Stay away from the John version of the emulators. Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOnAndroid/comments/6tc66a/comment/dljormq?st=J6MICCRH&sh=4b00303c
Im using the NESand SNES from Robert Broglia
I also have an android tablet (Shield K1) and a phone. I use a MOGA Hero controller (the small one for $20) with phone. If you get one, just put it in B mode and it works as a normal bluetooth controller (every game). I use Google Drive to sync all my Retro games save files using an app GDriveSync. This lets me continue my retro games on any of my devices (Shield TV, Shield Tablet, or phone). So I usually progress a bit at work on my phone then sync my data to Google's free cloud storage and continue on my TV or Tablet when I get home. It's basically what Sony tried to do with cross platform saves with Vita/PS4.
NES: Nes.emu
Genesis: MD.emu
The Nvidia controller already has a profile in these emulators as well.
I don't know of any way to seamlessly mount an SMB share on the device. You'll have to store files on the device. I have a 1TB external drive connected.
The emulators will need to be sideloaded but you can sideload remotely with adb, if you like. You could also use Gamestream to use Windows emulators on the Shield via streaming.
I use this and love it..

A fellow named Robert Broglia makes excellent emu for all sorts of retro gaming and they all work very well on Shield TV.
Each one costs a few bucks but they're very stable and well put together.

Glad to have you around! In case you want some recommendations, here's what I use (copied from a previous post):
Here's my list of emulators:
For Windows:
System | Emulator | Download Link | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
NES | Nestopia | Download | |
SNES | SNES9x | Download | Use this 99% of the time |
SNES | Higan | Download | High Accuracy Emulator, use if SNES9x doesn't work |
SNES | ZSNES | Download | Use ONLY for a few ROM Hacks that require it |
N64 | Mupen64Plus | Download | Most ROMS work with Mupen64Plus, if not use Project64. M64Py makes it have a prettier frontend |
N64 | Project64 | Download | Use if Mupen64Plus doesn't work |
N64 | CEN64 | Download | High Accuracy Emulator in development, hopefully will surpass the above two |
GCN/Wii | Dolphin | Download | |
GB/GBC | BGB | Download | |
GBA | VBA-M | Download | |
NDS | DeSmuME | Download | Many DS games can have their internal resolution increased considerably so DeSMuME X432R must be recommended as well which can increase the res from 480p to 1080p and add AA, Examples |
PS1 | Mednafan | Download | Mednafan is a command line only tool, use MedGui Reborn to give it a front end |
PS1 | PCSX-Reloaded | Download | Not as accurate as Mednafan, but supports increasing resolution and AA |
PS2 | PCSX2 | Download | |
PSP | PPSSPP | Download | |
GEN | Kega Fusion | Download |
