For those of you that upgraded directly to Nougat from Marshmallow, I created an app that adds the night mode functionality back. Requires a single ADB command for initial setup.

There's an app that will enable and control Android's native Night Mode implementation:

Doesn't require root, but does require running a adb shell command to enable the setting. Even includes the Quick Settings toggle
I ditched both f.lux and CF.Lumen in favor of Night Light. It gets out of the way and uses code built into the Android OS (so less resources) even though it has less features and granular control.
Finally, the camera app from the Pixel phones, which is supposed to be faster, has been ported to the N5X and you can get that on XDA, but I'm waiting on the release of 7.1 stable to test it.
It did when I tried it but I found f.lux very buggy. CF.Lumen was more stable for me, although now that I'm on Nougat I use the built-in Night Light mode through an app called Night Light for Android Nougat. No settings so you can't fine tune it, but I'm satisfied with it as-is. Being part of the base code of Android N means it's much more stable than either f.lux or CF.Lumen.
Does it mean that something like THIS will stop working?
Edit: yup that's what it means. The awesome dev of that app had coded a prompt to uninstall the app when you open it after upgrading to 7.1.1 saying it would be advisable to uninstall it. Back to f.lux which seems much smoother than it used to.
I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.nightlight simply because it was the first one I saw and it works well. It does require WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission be granted to it via adb shell, but does not require root.
Has anyone tried "Night Light for Nougat" which enables it via the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission?

Here's the link :)

Night Light is a nonroot f.lux-like app that works off Nougat's secret native night mode. Works very nicely!
Built-in nightmode (the red-ish tint), unlockable using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.nightlight and root or adb.
If you have access to a computer with ADB, then you can add night mode back using this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.nightlight
It's hidden. Download this app to enable it.

You can use this to set a schedule that should work a lot better than the settings baked into N.
Then why not install one with Tasker support? Check out Night Light for Android Nougat.
Get the function back with this.
