Not a bad idea. I have an old phone that I use as:
- An alarm clock; I'm a HEAVY sleeper, and have one of those alarm apps where you have to solve math problems to shut off the alarm.
- A music streaming device - Spotify, TuneIn, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Prime Music, etc.
- A white noise machine, for my GF when we travel.
The sound quality is... "acceptable" with the built-in speaker, but I often carry an Oontz Angle 3 with me when I travel. The sound quality is pretty good for a $25 speaker, the battery life is better than good, and it's splash\sand proof so you can take it to the beach.
I don't have an SD card in it at the moment, but if I wanted to use it 100% offline I could get one and download music from Spotify and\or copy my own files to it. I like Pi Music Player for music, but I'm sure there's a better option for audiobooks.
Seems like an easy option to me. I already had the phone, and it didn't take long to reset it, delete the unwanted apps I could and hide the apps I didn't want but couldn't uninstall. I keep airplane mode on all the time, and only turn Wi-Fi on to stream stuff; the battery life is ridiculous - something like 25 days a charge with light use.
Try Pi Music Player. Stellio is also very nice (but nothing compares to PowerAmp)
Was using Pi Music Player for a while.
Simply design and didn't see any ads yet. But i think there is no lyrics search options on this one.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, it wasn't designed to be a local music player. You could upload those songs to play music, which would solve that problem.
If you want a simple music player for local music, this looks good: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Project100Pi.themusicplayer
Yeah, its FOSS and awesome
Only cons: * no auto generated playlists like recently added, most played etc. * if you click on a song, it will play that song only, it wont be playing all songs in the list
To overcome this, I use Pi Music Player (not FOSS)
PI Player I am no expert, but I love my music. I have tried a few music apps over the years. I have not installed it on android tv yet as I listen mainly from my phone bluetooth this is the only one I use now. It's like a hidden gem to me. Even though very popular.
You can try it. It's on the playstore. You will need to side load though. Again, I am not sure if it works on Android tv but it is definitely worth a try. I really like it. If nothing else try on your android phone first see if it is something you would want.
It is searchable, plays everything I have thrown at so far. They update once in awhile to Has some features, I like. Simple layout, create your Play lists etc and Recently added list, which I love as anything new you add is right there in its own list.

I've really fallen in love with Pi Music Player, but I'm also working on writing an alternative Pandora app that caches your thumbed up music, lowering data usage and allowing offline listening of your favorite songs. I really like Pandora's recommendations and the focus on discovery, but I don't like using so much data and having to be online to use it.
Not really a best that I've found yet, but here's my llst:
I use Pi Music Player, if the songs are in a standard format it will play them.
