So I took this picture a couple of days ago in Sogndal, Norway. I was using the app: PlanIt! for Android. It told me that I was not able to see the milkyway from my location.
So my question - what am I seeing here?
Setup: Canon 5Dm3 + Tamron 15-30/2,8 @15mm - small edit through Lightroom
PlanIt! for Photographers is a similar sort of thing. I'm not sure that it's got as much extra functionality as PhotoPills (such as hyperfocal distance calculators and all the other lens-related stuff in PhotoPills that i never use), but it's a really good app nonetheless.
Thanks for the tips!
This was taken at Lake Takhlakh Lake in Washington which is pretty low light pollution. Also it looks like I lied! I went back through everything I took that trip and I actually had some slightly better milky shots: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqNmidmxrnLEiedkV5AnfmE40xl9ew
The above shot was taken with the following settings: - Sony A6300 - 12mm - f/3.2 (the lens can do 2.8 so not sure why I was at 3.2) - 12800 ISO - 25 sec exposure
As for using planning apps, at the time that I took this no I never had used any. I wasn't there specifically too shoot the milky way I was just there to camp and it was to incredible to not take photos. I have since discovered this app which I used on my android phone which is amazing (and complex!): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yingwen.photographertoolspro
I've been on the hunt for an equivalent app for iOS so I'll definitely check out PhotoPills (as well as the article).

PhotoPills https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.photopills.android.photopills&gl=US
Both allow you to see where the Sun/Moon will be during the day. Plus lots more. I prefer the first one, of the two.
Windy website and app https://www.windy.com https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.windyty.android&gl=US Useful for seeing the strength of the wind will be over the day and days ahead.
