I use Real Time GPS Tracker 2. It sends pings to a server. It's also a good tool for loved ones to watch your progress. I always tell them to send help if I'm stuck in one place for longer than a day, but I usually have data throughout all of my trips so they can always contact me regardless. Either way though, it's a good way to log data and go over it after the trip.
I'm sure you would have said were it the case, but if you happen to be in the Android minority, I've had great results with RTT2. I've used it to meet back up with friends and family amidst the post-run crowds. Entirely free, highly customisable.
If anyone from Critical Mass sees this PLEASE:
Edit: use something like Real-Time GPS Tracker.
Yes, I use RTT2 for exactly this purpose. You can choose when to switch it on and off. You can also set how frequently it should update your location to the server, which can be useful for preserving battery life. You're then given a URL which you can share with people who want to track your location. It works really well and I highly recommend it.

You send a link once and it stays persistent.
You can use Telegram and pin the message if that helps. Or MacroDroid can send the link by text but these steps aren't necessary once you've for the link saved
That's good, and I'm fine with 3G. I want to try data on my wife's phone (I already have some) to see if it's worth upgrading her plan. (I'm playing with a tracking app which uses some data - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenalp.realtimetracker2 )
You send a link to family members or anyone else who you'd like to know of your whereabouts and it sends them a ping at the specified time intervals. I used it on River trips when I go by myself. Don't have to think about it, and it also gives me great statistical information. ^Also,^it's^free
the best part is you're the only one that needs it installed. anybody you send a link to can view the map in any web browser.
I do have some tasks that need root, mainly hard killing Torque (using the TaskKill plugin) when I get out of the car, but stopping and starting the tracking app uses intents (no root required).
The app I use is Real-Time GPS Tracker 2 - RTT2 (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenalp.realtimetracker2&hl=en).
My friends and family can track me anytime they like at http://finddougie.com
It also starts tracking me using an APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System) app using intents, but that's a HAM radio thing.
I don't believe you need root to turn off WiFi in the car.
I run this when I'm riding alone. Works great.
