Hmm. I'm using Adaptive Rotation Lock so it actually can't switch to horizontal until I let it. I will have to try turning that off next time I encounter a portrait video and see if it still works.
I use an app (crippled free version) to do kinda the opposite, but it works very well. Rotations only take effect if I touch a translucent pop-up that appears for a short time after I move the phone. The pay version allows exceptions for apps that need them - especially games.
I use the paid version of Rotation Lock Adaptive which I find almost perfect.
When i turn the phone, it doesn't try to rotate the screen, instead it puts a floating transparent icon centered on screen for a few seconds to confirm if I want to rotate, if I don't tap it, it goes away (and it's not obtrusive). If I do tap it, Then the screen rotates, and it can rotate apps that normally restrict you from doing so! (it also handles upside down, which is nice sometimes)
The per app settings help a lot as well, especially for games or others that need landscape, but also apps that I find don't work in landscape and I don't want to bother not hitting the floating icon.
Only problem is rough UI design, such as getting to the per-app settings taking more taps than it should, and the list of states they can be set to is a bit undescriptive.
I use Rotation Lock adaptive
I strongly recommend the paid version.
Basically when you turn your phone, you get a transparent button in the middle you have to hit to rotate your screen, when you use this function be sure to set your launcher to stock portrait, otherwise it will mess with some apps and games that only use landscape mode.
Other than that you can set force portrait/landscape/auto rotate to specific apps. This is one of the best apps on my phone, I didn't even knew i needed.
Adaptive Rotation Lock - I really love this app, it only rotates the screen when I want to, when I rotate (or accidently rotate) my screen a transparent prompt will show up in the middle of the screen for like two seconds if I click it the screen rotates, if I don't nothing happens
App Usage - Best usage tracker out there, with month view, total usage, install history and a lot more.
Block This! - The newest app on my list, it blocks ads by acting as a fake vpn, and it's surprisingly good, it blocks youtube ads, in app ads and browser ads, although the app isn't perfect, it does catch a lot of ads, it has made my experience with using Flynx much better.
Download Accelerator Plus - A decent looking download manager, differently the best looking one, it catches all links I've thrown at it, and it shows detailed download information in the notification bar
Fliktu - Got tired of the default share picker, and switched to this, it's a much better experience, and you can pick up to 3 apps pinned at the top.
Quick Notes - great widget for creating quick notes you can't forget, and it reminds you with an alarm so you can't overhear it.
Redirect - Great if you download a lot of files and don't want to organize them into folders yourself, it great for cleaning up the download folder.
TapPath - Tap on a link once to open it in Flynx, tap twice to open it in Firefox, and tap three times to send the link as a push, that's my configuration of the app, and it very useful.
Ticklr Free - I used to use headsoff, as my notification ticker app, but once in a while it would show the heads up notifications for a split second, before it showed the ticker, so I switched to Ticklr, I'll probably switch between those two apps once in a while.
TypeMail - Hands down the best email app I've used, you can add multiple email accounts, mark as read from the notification bar, automatic night mode, reminders to read an email later, a unified inbox, and the list goes on, try it out, imo it's a lot better than inbox that everyone is talking about.
Just installed it. Thanks for telling us about this, I had no idea it existed.

I always used to use Adaptive Rotation Lock which worked great on everything I had. I haven't used it on my S8+ though.
