Learn about REM cycles. To oversimplify, you want to sleep for a certain amount of ~90 minute intervals so you wake up at the end of a cycle. If you wake up in the middle of one, your body isn't ready to wake up. It is actually better to get less sleep but with complete REM cycles than it is to get a ton of sleep.

Here is an app for your phone to help you start learning the concept.
I used to have trouble sleeping and couldn't find a good medicine to help. Then it was recommended to me by a doctor to take the stress off going to sleep by stressing more when I woke up. Instead of setting a time I wanted to sleep, I would instead set a time that I would, no matter what, pull myself out of bed. I eventually decided to actually try it and it really worked (and has since) to correct my poor sleep. But I also set one or two frivolous alarms before the final alarm to have the satisfaction of "ignoring" them and feeling like I can sleep in longer.
Another supplement I started trying was to get a sleep calculator that you can set what time you're going to bed and count the number of cycles I want. Or I can set up the time I want to wake up and it'll tell me when to get to bed to have the number of sleep cycles desired. The theory behind this app comes from the following example: have you ever woken up too early and felt really awake, only to fall back asleep and wake up later, feeling groggy? It's theorized that waking up during one of your "sleep cycles" can disrupt your restful sleep. So if your alarm disrupts a sleep cycle, ok to can be difficult.
Also, don't forget to just lay down in bed with the rest of your electronics off. Keep your phone or tablet for reading, but you might want an app that dims the screen for bed viewing so the images aren't as likely to wake you up.
And practice good bed habits: make your bed every morning when you wake up and don't sit or lay on the bed until you're ready to sleep.
And hey, if it helps great, because with bad sleep, you can use all the help you can get!
Hope I could help, OP. Good luck getting some sleep. It is quiet important.
Just an FYI, there's an Android app for this too that I use. It automatically sets up an alarm for the time you choose! SleepyTime: Bedtime Calculator
try Sleepytime or Sleepbot
you probably wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle, which makes you feel awful.
Thats probably because you wake up in REM or middle of the dream. Try a bedtime calculator to wake up outside of the REM cycle. Helped me a ton: sleepy time
One thing that I think is important to have while doing this, is a sleep cycle calculator which tells you when to sleep or when to wake up so that you never wake up between cycles and feel really drowsy and weak the rest of the day.
I've been using an app (for Android) called Sleepy Time that does the work greatly and even tells you how many cycles you'll sleep.
The code that it's based is really simple even to do in python so my idea is that you incorporate this sleep cycle calculator so that people wake up in the morning but sleep the amount necessary to rest and enjoy their day.
Good luck!
If you're waking up during sleep cycles, you'll tend to be more tired even if you get a decent amount of sleep. Try downloading this app and using it as an alarm. It tells you when to wake up so you don't break any sleep cycles.
Try using an app like SleepyTime to help plan out your sleep schedule to wake up at the correct times feeling more refreshed. You want to wake up in Stage 1 of the sleep cycle. I would say to open up your curtains to allow natural light into your room in the morning, but 4:30 is before the sun rises.
/u/fabric_haze Is spot on. I hope you find balance ;)
There are already four other apps with the same name. You might want to add something to the title to make it unique; i.e., SleepyTime: Bedtime Calculator.
This happens to me but because of the sleepy time app for android. I tell it to set an alarm based on when I go to sleep, and its nearly always some kinda odd number.
There is a sleepytime app on the Play Store.
I use SleepyTime.
YES YES YES. LISTEN TO THIS!!! For those of you that are lazy and want the answers now, I'm going to add links and resources, because almost all of this points made me think, "Oooh! I know the exact video for that!"
There is also an app for Android
Sleep for every 1.5 hour interval. I use this app, SleepyTime for tracking my sleep.
There's also one for Android too! Best app I've ever downloaded.
