Any phone, then download Wiser or Necta Launcher. Also, you can increase the text size in the Settings > Accessibility menu.
Wiser simple launcher is what I gave to my grandmother to use and she has had very minute issues with it. It's very easy to use and is BIG. Definitely worth having a look at.

I've got two that I've found work really well for most older or luddite people forced to use a smart phone.
But this one seems to be more popular overall
I've never used them more than enough to test for myself, but my aunt preferred necta of the two.
I'm considering putting this on my Mother's phone since she's been struggling with hers. Wiser Launcher. Don't like that it forces a 2nd app called Companion to be installed. Companion can mirror her screen on mine for tech support, which seems useful, but I don't like that it is mandatory to use the launcher.

Maybe? Probably not. If there is enough demand, there's probably an Android fork or a dedicated Android launcher that does this (a quick search turned up this). Pair it with a low-end phone and you're good to go.
The market for people who want a simplified interface that is specifically based on a (jailbroken) iOS, is probably negligible.
Slightly different topic, but I made an "elderly friendly" version of Linux Mint for my grandpa. He doesn't really understand the difference and probably zones out when I try to explain, but he's happy that he no longer has to wait half an hour for the Windows updates to finish, before he can look at "the Emil".
I was playing around with Wiser, and that didn't need root. [EDIT: To elaborate, after dialing a number in Wiser, it would launch my stock phone dialer and attempt to connect a call. FreedomPop Messaging would see this, stop the stock phone dialer from initiating the call, and instead launch the call through FreedomPop Messaging. And this happens without root.]
As for the FreedomPop app being weird with late notifications like that, I never knew about that because I just stuck to using Google Voice with Hangouts. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find a good way to integrate that with Wiser.
The FreedomPop Global sim uses 3 Wireless UK as their carrier, and uses 3 UK's roaming contracts with AT&T and T-Mobile for coverage in the US.
Why don't you get a small phone like the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and then add a custom launcher with only the functions that you want? Something like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wiser.home?
You can add this keyboard to a Samsung Galaxy S4 for your typing needs. http://www.witrigs.com/ultra-thin-slide-out-bluetooth-keyboard-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s4-white
Or combine the two ideas and get an old Galaxy S4 with the Bluetooth keyboard I linked and add the simple launcher linked above?
A simple launcher could be a good option https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wiser.home
Also try http://biglauncher.com/ and Wiser Launcher
Also consider replacing the default keyboard with one that has larger sized keys. There are a number of them available like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigbuttons&hl=en
What about installing a simple launcher on their phones?

It simplifies the interface to what they need

Looks like you mean Wiser - Simple Launcher
Maybe try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wiser.home
Check out "Wiser – Simple Senior Launcher" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wiser.home
I installed this UI for my dad, it makes the phone less cluttered and easier to navigate for people that aren't so great at technology.

Sounds like he needs Wiser, Necta or Big Launcher. Or maybe downgrade him to a flip phone.
