Where I live (Belgium), 9gag's popularity has been increasing. Four years ago, when I first started browsing 9gag no one knew it, now half of my friends use it and I've overheard some random girls on my bus talk about it, they say they like it because of the "dank memes". Edit: It's not as popular as I thought. Still 51st place (below reddit, hurray!) Edit #2: Popularity has been decreasing in Belgium. Ignore me. I'm an idiot.
Hi, nice to have you on board.
If you want to avoid pornography and bigotry, I would recommend you get the Reddit Enhanncement Suite extension: https://redditenhancementsuite.com/
It lets you "filter" subreddits from your /r/all so that you can browse in peace. Plus it's just overall very helpful.
> and is now not even in the top 500
Could you say where you found that statistic? Alexa tells a somewhat different story.
It's not that I am saying that the community hasn't been indeed losing momentum in the recent times, but, - I say this from experience as a user who left relatively recently - this doesn't make it true that there aren't a lot of 9gag users who are essentially lurkers and visit the site, not because they like it, but because they simply don't know a better alternative. In other words, loss of enthusiasm doesn't mean leaving the site completely.
When I was on 9gag, there was this depressive emptiness that made me constantly more upset with the community, and yet I had to hear of Reddit just by chance in order to go see it... and ultimately view this sub, in order to start checking things out more and realizing just how wrong I was when I thought 9gag was, nevertheless, one of the best sites of the kind.
I know there are a lot of people in a similar situation, and the thing is, the kind of informative posts and comments that have been recently suggested again would have had an effect on me.
Subreddits are simple. Looking for science? Go to /r/science or /r/space or /r/Physics or whatever you're looking for. For memes I'd check out /r/dankmemes, /r/me_irl (or /r/meirl depending on what you prefer), /r/BlackPeopleTwitter. But in general, you'll accumulate a list of good subs rather quickly by browsing /r/all or just by links in the comments.
Welcome aboard, btw. I usually recommend people try RES (reddit enhancement suite). It's an add-on that makes browsing a lot more comfortable.
Every user has an Client Id . Every post has the op client id in it's HTML code . The conversion to client id to username is only possible on a 9gag mobile app . (Want to know how it work ) (check out my video on the other comment)
But if you scrape all comment you can pretty much make a database with username and client id . On that concept there's a chrome extension .
Now I was looking for the extension . But the link is giving a 404 . Either 9gag developers got to the developer of the extension or to the Google chrome company .
Anyway there's still a play store app that will do this for you Here .
That's one of the things in which Reddit didn't really catch up. They could do that, very easily in fact, since comments here are in Markdown format and Markdown already has a syntax for images (
) but it seems like the devs are focused on other stuff. Don't worry about it too much though, they'll either get it done or you will get used to this one.
You could try Imgur too. It was originally a hosting site for Reddit, then kind of evolved into its own community, but it's still very similar. Also, in the meantime, install RES, it makes it way easier to see images and other stuff posted in the comments.
