Authentic Genuine Nagoya NA-771 15.6-Inch Whip VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Antenna SMA-Female for AnyTone, BaoFeng, and Yaesu https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KC4PWQQ/
No the programing cable only sends serial data to the radio for the use of programming it.
If you want to do aprs you can get one of these cables that connect to your phone to use software like aprsdroid
https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-APRS-K1-Interface-APRSDroid-Compatible/dp/B01LMIBAZW
Since no one has said it yet, getting legal is SUPER easy.
Download this app, and use it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iversoft.ham.test.prep&hl=en
Once you get above 80% on the app consistently, type your info in here and find a testing session: http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session
Then wait a couple weeks and you're legal. At that point you can use any ham frequency you want. The only problem is you both need tickets (really anyone with a baofeng).
And the reason we hate on people who transmit illegally is because the whole reason we have these mostly de-regulated bands of frequencies is because we self-regulate.
It'd be a damn shame if the FCC just said "Nope, no more ham frequencies" because a bunch of kiddo's grabbed some baofengs and used them like they were FRS radios.
I had the same issue and I will recommend to you what I have to others. Dump the Baofeng speaker mic and get one from Commountain. They are reasonably inexpensive and are much better than the Baofeng branded ones. I have the larger of these two, it's a clone of a standard Motorola unit though I think I perhaps should have gotten the compact one.
https://www.amazon.com/Speaker-Reinforced-Arcshell-Shoulder-Microphone/dp/B07MX4J3W8/
https://www.amazon.com/Compact-Reinforced-Arcshell-Shoulder-Microphone/dp/B01N5LJ0YR/
Sounds like the lead you are using has a ground loop, causing the hum. There is a specific cable available for connecting baofengs to smart phones / laptops for APRS (and thus any audio in/out). Out of stock at amazon, but you can see the lead you need here https://www.amazon.co.uk/BTECH-APRS-K2-Connector-APRSDroid-Compatible-USB-Power-Cable/dp/B01LMIBAZW
I recommend returning them and buying some FRS radios if you're going to use them as walkie-talkies for kids.
I don't know what frequency you're on, but it's very likely to be one that requires a license - either an amateur radio license, or a land mobile radio license - to use, and unlicensed use is likely to attract hostile attention.
If you and your kids want to get licensed, that's awesome, but if you just want to play radio, there are much better choices that won't involve breaking the law or disrupting other people (including potentially public safety users).
These might be a good choice, and they include NOAA weather alert functionality to let you know if there's a weather event expected:
https://www.amazon.com/Midland-LXT600VP3-Channel-Two-Way-Privacy/dp/B007B5ZR4G
If you want to stick with Baofeng, these are a little more expensive but don't require licensing:
Dual band antennas are plentiful, but you will need a SMA Female to SO-239 connector as the connectors will almost certainly not be compatible without an adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00COKNKS8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_FD52V3QWGS2QDRHWJA3G?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's possible to program without the cable but there's the link to the one I use for my radios.
You can buy AA battery packs for those radios here. I've bought them and they work, but they fit very snug. There are other battery packs for them on Amazon as well. That would allow you to pack a bunch of disposable batteries and use those instead of worrying about charging. Not sure how long they last on the batteries though since I haven't used them for long. Just have them in case of apocalypse :)
You can also replace the www with smile in your amazon links, like https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RRPC8VQ/ - the price remains the same but Amazon will donate .5% of the sale to charity. Not much, but it's somethin'
+1 on the cable and CHIRP. Its night in day. Find a good CSV file to start with like the RadioMaster list, edit it to suit your needs. Import repeaters from RepeaterBook. Bam good to go.

There is alot of favor of the UV5R series & its price to performance is understandably why. But, in countless comparisons the UV82 series is largely superior in quality (especially in the receiving end). I went with Abbree antennas, used an inline surecoswr meter, and they are near perfect on 2 meters and under 1.5 on 70cm and 1.25m. I didn't test my Nagoya antennas though. Probably just as good.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075H8FDDR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I second this opinion, putting the so239/pl259 connection directly on the HT makes me feel like I'm inviting things to break.
Longer cable version
https://www.amazon.com/DHT-Electronics-Handheld-Antenna-Connectors/dp/B00M5YN57O
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that's the one I bought. No driver needed. However, make sure that you really have the portion in the HT seated very well and snug. On my first few tries mine wasn't really plugged in well, though I thought it was impossible to be more so. Really make sure it's snapped in there. Though that Amazon page says no drivers needed, and it was true for my El Capitan Mac, you would need one for linux.
I have one of these on my car, I have had great results with it, both on simplex and repeaters.
I think my longest simplex contact was on I-5 in California, about 70 miles or so to someone’s base station. Something to note when high up on a hill the baofeng overloads easy, but when you are far from infrastructure this antenna shines. I got mine from HRO two years ago and it’s held up well on the two cars that I have owned.

in general, make sure it has RP-SMA for the connector type.
Surprisingly, I've been very happy with the Abbree foldable whip I got on Amazon. It comes in lengths from 13"-42" (33-107cm). I got the 18.8"/48cm version and it outperformed my 771 on both bands. It folds up too like a military tactical antenna for easier storage. A couple of people have reviewed them on Youtube and liked them. I'm thinking of getting the 42" just to be absurd about it.

Here is the antenna upgrade that I have found to work the best
That should be what you want to connect your HT to coax.
Then get a solar panel that charges via usb
Get the extended battery and usb charger so you don’t have to carry all the cradles around
Well you can do both audio output and input. Look at a the APRS-K1 cable, for example.
PTT would be done via VOX with that.
I think you may have things reversed - the FTDI chip is the one you want. There are many knock-off cables using all kinds of USB<->serial converters requiring various arcane drivers, but the FTDI chip is a a widely used industry standard for all manner of applications, not just Baofeng radios.
All you need is a cable with a genuine FTDI chip, either the one that u/flyonpoop linked to, or one like this on Amazon, and if for some reason it doesn't work out of the box, install the offical FTDI drivers from here.
Failing that, if you really want to go down the 9-pin serial route then CHIRP should work with an old Kenwood cable, if you can find one.
I've never seen these without a cable bundled, did you buy it used? But yeah these don't have the typical "kenwood style" two prong cable, it's basically microusb, but you can't just use a regular microUSB cable either.

The GM-15 Pro has both USB-C charging, IP67 waterproof-ness, and can be picked up for less than $30. Great radio.
I love mine... I'm just looking for an excuse to buy another one.
Curious, why make one, just as a project? There are plenty of amplified mixers with individual controls that are portable out there. Here's just the first random example I found on Amazon, googling the info will find others, including cheaper options from Ali, etc. https://www.amazon.com/amp/dp/B0B1G3G8MD/

Battery chargers contain circuitry to limit the charge current and voltage. If you just hook them up to a power supply directly, there's a good change you will cause a fire.
Also, when you connect the batteries all together, they will probably be at different voltages. The higher voltage batteries will immediately dump a VERY large current into the lower voltage batteries. The result will also probably be fire.
You need each battery to be charged independently by their own charge circuit. You can power all of the chargers from the same power supply though, assuming it has enough amps.
The TP5100 would be a good charge controller for this use case. You will need to remove one of the R100 resistors to reduce the current to 1 Amp (2 Amps is probably too much for most HT batteries), and solder the "SET" bridge to set it for a two-cell battery (most HT batteries are 2S aka 7.4V). You could change to a single R200 if you'd like to reduce the charge rate to 0.5 Amps. I think Baofengs charge at 0.7A normally, for example.
So if you were to do 4 chargers, each at 1 Amp, you would want a 10-12V power supply capable of 4 Amps output.

Check out the BF-F9 V2N. It appears to be identical to the BF-F8HP (and programs on Chirp as such), but is priced only about ten bucks more than the UV5R. Worth it for the larger battery alone, IMO.
I just finished it this morning, so I haven't had any time to test how long it lasts but it should be comparable to the BL-5L battery since the 18650s I have are 3500 mAh. The bonus is that the two 18650s are about 10$ and can be re-charged more times before being no good.

This was the best module I could find that had USB-C charging for 2S batteries (most are 1S), but I was really disappointed at the lack of the signaling resistors. I feel like the industry should have figured that out years ago.
If someone finds a better module, let me know and I may redesign the charger to fit it. Soldering those resistors was hard for me and I'm pretty good at it; I'd love for the project to be more accessible to beginners.
Assuming UK...
Menu setting 2 on the UV-5R will change the pwer output to 1W if you change it to LOW. Still technically twice as much power as OFCOM permits but whether you'd ever get caught (let alone punished) is a matter for debate...
Unlike the FCC in the US, OFCOM don't seem to care about removeable antennas:
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0025/85156/ir_2009_analogue_and_digita1.pdf
It's really all about the frequency, bandwidth and power.
If you really want to stay on the right side of the law, you could try using an SMA attunator (-3dB on low power would give you 0.5W)
https://uk.farnell.com/radiall/r411803124/attenuator-sma-1w-3db-6ghz/dp/4196661 might do the trick. Take my advice with a pinch of salt though, I'm a total newbie to this :)
Do the Walker's accept a 3.5mm audio connector? I looked on their website but their listed specs are useless.
I have a set of Howard Leight Impact Sports and I bought this Y cable connector. I experimented with a few different configurations and this one provided me with exactly what I wanted.
Just get an SDR and you can listen to a ton of things all over the spectrum and you'll be able to watch the spectrum as well.
It's a cheap radio so I got a cheap rubber duck and a cheap mag mount for my car to go with it. They do work better than the stock rubber duck for Rx and Tx, and the mag mount works a lot better than either rubber duck, even using the sticky pad since the magnet doesn't hold at highway speeds.

I use this... you just screw in the built in small antenna on the mount, then the wire to baofeng. It works great! I'm not sure if this one linked to you is the correct gender. Please double check: https://www.amazon.com/NAGOYA-RB-CLP-SMA-Female-Antenna-Accessroy/dp/B01JUVEPBY/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=2M0BMQHK64PP&keywords=sma+male+window+mount&qid=1648958222&s=electronics&sprefix=sma+male+window+mount%2Celectronics%2C95&sr=1-3
Oh, yea there's your problem! The radios all require specific cables. Sometimes you'll get one that will work on a few brands but most are brand specific. If you can get it, something like this would let you program different types with one cable.

Yes, i am running it on a plate carrier which has a 15L pack on the back panel. Unfortunately i’m moving so i don’t have it with me now to take a picture.
I am willing to do some building, i’ll check this video out as soon as i’m over reading, thanks for the reference.
I have this antenna: link
So currently it stays on the side of the backpack, i am handy and have a 3d printer so i can make mostly anything, what will you suggest? Tigers tail or the one with the radials? I could make it so it deploys with an extending arm, so it is compact while moving or at close range.
I use the belt clip. I find it to actually be one of the best belt clips of all the radios I own.
My Kenwood on the other hand has a terrible belt clip, so I use this: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B007TYU5I2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_6RET9K8ESB8RP6GK62XY
There's a smaller size available, which I think will fit the uv5r.

Buy a [cross band repeater controller](www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0KVOC2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_ZJ2FCFQ4RT37AN6PAHFF) and modify the input cable to receive input from the PC. There will be a lot of cut off because of the time it takes the cheap Chinese components inside the controller to respond to the PC signal and the same for the radio to respond to the repeater. When I did this, it was almost a full two seconds. So, “Fuck You” would sound like a repeater click. And “Never gonna give you up” will sound like “give you up”.
I bought this telescoping antenna and I can hit a repeater that is 40 miles away. Collapsed it is 28cm (11") and extended it is 1m. It is crazy long, but it is "half-wave" and it slaps.
It's the short whip. 7.5 inches, so it's about the same length as the stock antenna, but much better and less obtuse since it's flexible.
ExpertPower XP-669C 7.5-Inch Dual... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008Y2SPH6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Before the car wash ate it I used my UT-72 with my UV-82HP going around and to / from Richmond, VA chatting up W4RAT. It worked great; I could head towards Charlottesville on I-64 and talk until about the rest area.
Could you give us some details on what repeater you're trying to touch and the location from which you're trying to reach it?
If you haven't yet bought one, there is a deal on two UV-82 for $45 on Slickdeals currently.
It's nice to not have a boring black radio. With kids (or accidents) I'm a big fan waterproof radios. The UV-92 comes in some nice colors if you can find them in Canada or eat the shipping from the US.
i appreciate your input, but it was clearly made to be cut. there is a set screw just so you can take the stinger part out of the base and trim it.
i am super new to all of this, so i was hesitant to cut anything even if i thought i needed to.
what i dont understand is how they say this can do 2m, 6m and 70cm, its way too long as is for 70cm at 48 inches long, and according to my math i would have to cut it down to about 6 inches for 1/4 wave or 12 inches for 1/2.
would you mind taking a look at this item and telling me if i am wrong?
I was referring to this cable https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Earphone-Speaker-Baofeng-Waterproof/dp/B07YY3RKLM/
I understand seems like alot of cables tho. I think everything would plug in fine don't know why you would want 3 cables to do it.
Sure, I just mostly followed YouTube tutorials. My radio and Google Pixel are connected with this. On my radio, VOX is set to 4 and of course the frequency is set to 144.390MHz. On the APRSdroid app, the connection preference is set to Audio (AFSK). High quality de-modulator is checked on and Bluetooth headset is checked off. No-op preamble is 500 ms. Voice frequency is 144.390. Location settings is set to Manual and I chose my location on the map. Went back to main screen, clicked Start Tracking and then Send Position. Voilà
No, one plug is TRS 3.5mm, and the other is TRS 2.5mm. you can get adaptors from anywhere that go radio to TRRS (which is like what your phone headphones jack uses), and then also get a TRRS splitter. Examples:

Because Linux's drivers work just fine with the cheap cables.. the Windows drivers intentionally won't work the cheaper drivers in the cheap cables. In fact they even intentionally disrupt communication, if you can believe that.

Baofeng has started locking the radios transmit function to amateur only frequencies. This is the topic of the sticky in this subreddit if you want to know more.
OP I would return these radios and get a proper set of GMRS radios. Just out of curiosity what led you to believe that these radios would be legal for use on GMRS?
If you want the UV-5R form factor in GMRS legal radios this seems to be the way to go. https://www.amazon.com/BAOFENG-UV-5X-Repeater-Rechargeable-Handheld/dp/B08T9BCXVB/
If you have never tried programming radio with chirp, firstly try installing a ready-made channel list. These guys offer a pretty good channel list if you buy their cable
That's what i did, i made my own homebrew antenna... thought it was the best thing next to sliced bread. went over to a friends place and they tested the antenna and the swr was 10:1. i was like umm yeah not good. i ended up getting the same adapters as he had and started to cut the antenna down until i got to the point where i had a swr of 1.07:1.
These adapters have really helped me out. they aren't the super top notch of brands, but they have been good to me so far.
I'm not sure if you have a swr meter, but if you are going to be using radios with any kind of antenna it's a good piece of equipment to have. You always want a swr of 1.50:1 or lower!
If you don't have a swr meter here's a decent one to get you by. SWR Meter $56.99 - Amazon
Since your TX is good, but your RX is bad, there could be a possibility it's the antenna and using a SWR meter could at least rule that out. Plus, it will also show you how many watts you are pumping out. ;)
Get a GMRS license. Cheap enough and you can share it with the family (very extended family too). There are GMRS radios based on the Baofeng platform: https://www.amazon.com/TIDRADIO-Repeater-Capable-Scanning-Receiver/dp/B097XSMX5T?ref=pf_ov_at_pdctrvw_dp
This way, you stay legal.
Better still, get the ham license. It's easy to pass the first one.
You need a 2-pin to 3.5mm adapter that separates the PTT from the socket. Those 2.5mm/3.5mm plugs on the side are not wired as you would expect, and in fact the Speaker+ signal is carried on the tip of the smaller pin: https://i.imgur.com/FdQPSQO.png
This would work: https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-Connector-Adapter-Compatible-Headsets/dp/B019YJMRZS/
Sorry man, No you have to use a murs type certified radio for murs. Uv5r is legal in the US for licensed ham radio use only.
However, for airsoft, i do recommend either using frs radios, or murs radio, neither of which requires a license, you just need to use a type certified radio for them. And then after that, if you choose murs, get a murs antenna for it. Frs radios can't use removable antennas.
Check this out. 2 pack murs radios for $44 not bad.

in my experience: white box - preban cardboard box - bricked

Hi, purchased a new UV-5R recently with an Amazon Cable that did not work by changing to Prolific or any other driver modification through the device manager. However, there is one driver that I saw through the Amazon Reviews that I Installed and works perfect now.
The Amazon review stated the following: google CH341SER.EXE. You will find it on a site called wch-ic. Download/run the driver software and click "Install" with the cable plugged in when the weird grey screen comes up. Unplug/replug the cable and you should have a perfectly working new com port (usually COM3 in my experience). Works fine to program my UV-5R both uploading to and downloading from the radio.
Once I installed the file, the cable works perfect. This is the cable I bought: Baofeng Programming Cable

Those use the regular Kenwood two prong ones right? I am not sure what you mean when you say dual channel but I recommend one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Compact-Reinforced-Arcshell-Shoulder-Microphone/dp/B01N5LJ0YR
I have the top one and like it allot, but it is a bit heavy. Both should work much better than the POS Baofeng branded ones.
What is a "711", did you mean the "771" which is 16 inches long? If so, they work pretty okay for receiving but are a bit unwieldy and get in the way for me personally.
Just look at the Amazon listing for the Nagoya antennas, this listing, not necessarily this specific antenna, although I think it is what you're referring to: https://www.amazon.com/Authentic-NA-771-15-6-Inch-SMA-Female-BTECH/dp/B00KC4PWQQ/
Don't get Nagoyas from random other places, they may be fake. You don't want a knockoff of a cheap antenna.
And a bit of warning; if you put on a higher gain antenna and your reception gets worse this can happen because baofengs receivers can overload from RFI (computers, USB, cellular, etc, etc, lots of RF around you) and can't demodulate anything anymore. It can feel pretty disorienting for a better antenna to receive worse but it can happen, just depends on your radio and the environment.
I use a USB cable for mine. I like it a lot better than having another wall wart. I have a 6 port USB station for charging stuff. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2WZEAS/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o00\_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also suffered with these cables, so I understand your problem. My advice to you is not to waste your time searching and installing drivers. Better buy a cable with FTDI chip like this
https://www.amazon.com/Mirkit-Programming-Flashing-Kenwood-Archell/dp/B07MQVJLZ4
and you will be happy
I don't think those are actually legal for FRS, they have removable antennas. Baofeng GT-22 I believe is legal for FRS.
Agree. And you can get a pair of UV-5G GMRS radios for about the same price as two UV-5R. How come everyone wants to buy UV-5Rs and use them illegally instead of just a similarly-priced radio that's perfectly legal.
No,
Just buy a type accepted radio.
You can get a pair of Baofeng FRS radios for $25
I just went on a 9 day trip in the Boundary Waters. Using a rollup slim jim I was able to hit repeaters from every remote camp with the exception of one.
I went with
Dual band 2M / 70CM Slim Jim Antenna with 10' or 16'.
Connector: UHF Male (PL-259)
Cable Length: 10' Cable
SKU: DUAL-2M70CM-LONG-UHFM
I choose the PL-259 so that I could use the slim jim on any radio I may get in the future by getting the correct pigtail.
https://n9taxlabs.com/shop I highly recommend the n9tax. Be sure to get yourself a pigtail to keep the stress off your radio. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FC6PHQ3/

FYI I purchased the larger battery uv5r 2 weeks ago and I'm able to successfully transmit on GMRS frequencies. I've personally tested it on 462.575. Maybe they're an older batch? I got 2 of them same batch and they both worked fine on that frequency.
