When I was first getting into OSDM I found this list. The descriptions for the Finnish scene were intriguing, so I checked out Slumber of Sullen Eyes and Nespithe immediately afterwards. I remember thinking "man, this is kind of weird and I don't want to listen to this... well maybe I should stick it out." And now it's one of my absolute favorite death metal albums.
I showed it to the only friend of mine who listens to metal (with whom I sadly share no taste) and he said he didn't like it because he couldn't tell the songs apart. Like. Man. That's like saying you don't like coffee because it's hot. You're missing the point.

Morbid Angel has nothing to do with Technical Death Metal. Most modern Technical Death Metal bands have little in common with OSDM. Old School Technical Death Metal bands from the same scene as Morbid Angel. Death, Monstrosity, Cynic, Atheist, Nocturnus & Eulogy.
If you want bands like Morbid Angel, check out, Mithras, Immolation, Altars, Drawn And Quartered, Diabloic, Vader's First album.

I've been to several thrash and death metal shows at a local indoor venue near me, seen some very cool bands like Sepultura, Destruction, Left to Die (Death tribute band with two original members), and Cavalera Conspiracy on their BeneathArise tour. I always have a great time, and at the Sepultura and Cavalera show, I saw a few children about the age of your son!
Everyone is always really chill there. I've gotten compliments and high fives on my shirts. The most rowdy place you can be is near the moshpit, as you can get shoved around sometimes, especially when the headliner is on. I imagine the moshpit at a Cannibal Corpse show is gonna be insane as eff, but as long as you stay away from it, you'll have a great time. Just make sure both of you wear good earplugs, especially your son. These are the earplugs I've used for every concert I've been to in the past two years and they work great. They lower the DB by quite a bit but retain a lot of clarity. It's worth the investment if you plan to go to a lot of shows.
The problem is that people present wearing earplugs as just "It will protect your hearing." While that is true, with quality earplugs, the show is going to sound better too. Unless you are really far away, you're just going to get pounded with sound. By wearing earplugs, it's still loud but actually sounds like music. Just make sure to go with something like this and not just the crappy pieces of foam.
first heard Liege of Inveracity on the Best of Grindcore & Destruction compilation back in the mid 90's. So good.

If you're disinclined to listen to me, try Rate Your Music (which is pretty iffy a lot of the time because it's all user sourced, but has some great stuff, too) or the metal-archives, or the /r/metal/wiki (which is run by different people).
If you look you'll find mostly the same stuff.

i think you shouldn't have a problem with your mixer into your soundcard. is it an onboard one or pci card?
I just switched to etymotic ear plugs, and used them at a show last night. cheap, decent sound quality. recommended.
