First of all, you didn’t bomb it. You got an average score, and not average as in an average person out of the 7 billion people on earth. Average as in students who have for the most part already obtained undergraduate degrees and who are interested in pursuing further study. Second of all, take it again. Power of grit.

When you square x,x, it becomes positive no matter what it was before; then, when you take the square root, it's still positive. Therefore, the answer is just |x|∣x∣, not ±x.
From brilliant
Well, practising difficult verbal questions using Manhattan Prep makes the actual GRE verbal section seem easier I suppose. But I would rather practise as many questions as possible at the same level of difficulty.
You need to know the most frequently occurring GRE words really well. Don't spend too much time learning really obscure words. The thing is, if you are able to complete TC and SE questions quickly, that time can be used up in RC and will make tackling RC much easier. In order to complete TC/SE quickly, you cannot spend too much time deducing the meaning of the words. So, whatever words you learn, make sure you learn them in such a way that you are able to identify its meaning with just a glance rather than digging inside your brain.
I mostly used the Magoosh flashcards (skipped most of the advanced part) and this word list. But I think the word list in the Kaplan Verbal Workbook is excellent as they have grouped the words according to its rough meaning.
So it's late at night and I'm extremely tired, so I could be mistaken. But here, y < x. So the angles for x will be larger than the angle of y. Think about it this way: make y = 30 and x = 75 (honestly you could use any angles here but for whatever reason this is what I thought of). Since PRQ includes an arc of x AND an arc of y, its measure would be angle y AND angle x, meaning its length is 105. Now QPR includes BOTH arcs of x which means its measure would equal 2x, or 150. Thus, quantity b > a.
The answer is D:
All we know AD=DC=6, ABCD looks like a square, but we cannot be sure.

And as fine tip dry erase as you can!
Recommend Artline 2-in1 with ultra fine tip if you can find them.
Also don’t stand up, I got yelled at for half standing once to adjust my chair…pretty strict.
Otherwise, unlike some others on here I had a great at home test experience. No issues at all.

If you have a week:
Establish strategies for tackling a section: order to do questions in, how much time to spend on a question etc etc and adjust as you get more practice.
Buy the Offical GRE Verbal Reasoning Book, do all the questions and review/understand every question you got wrong or weren't 100% confident
I recommend doing practice sections w/ blind review: do a section, before checking answers go thru each question and A) check each problem you are very confident about B) circle each problem you can eliminate some answer but eventually guessed the best fitting one C) put an x next to any problem you are clueless about => first give yourself unlimited time and open notes to go thru B and C and then check your answers. If you got any questions of type A wrong => REVIEW CLOSELY THESE AS THEY ARE SHOWING A HOLE IN YOUR GRE THINKING
Do the Magoosh flashcard decks @ https://gre.magoosh.com/flashcards/vocabulary/decks | Try to get thru Basic VII. Write down any words you miss and review them when you have a break. The Magoosh vocab app is great too.
So get the Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Book and Magoosh flashcard app and grind thru them. Do blind review, review mistakes, update strategies as you gain experience, and always note down any missed/new vocab words. That should get you 4 points.
Yes. It didn’t have answer explanations. That’s one bad part of it. However I did spend time trying to understand why my answers were wrong. Sometimes looking at the percent of people who got a question correct will give you insight into why the question was so tricky. Maybe the right answer choice was trickily worded. Once you know what the correct answer is, it should be easier to justify it. There is always evidence in the passage for the correct answer. I'm working through Sherpa Prep's 5 math guides right now, and I like them. They're in-depth and written clearly, and have lots of practice problems. If you get them on Amazon, you can use the code SherpaReddit to get 50% off. https://www.amazon.com/Master-Key-GRE-Strategy-Guides/dp/0996622551
I have the same question. And I just noticed that Manhattan Prep is coming out with a new edition of their 5lb Book in a few weeks; it's up for preorder on Amazon now, and part of the book's description reads "Manhattan Prep's best-selling 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems has been updated to include an online companion of lessons from Interact® for GRE, our revolutionary interactive, on-demand learning platform." So apparently some of the Interact content will be available to buyers of the new edition of the 5lb Book.
I'm considering holding off a few weeks on buying the 5lb Book and getting this newer edition when it releases, especially because its description says that the new edition includes new timed mixed practice sets. If I do, I'll report back on my experience with the Interact content that's available to me. (I can't imagine that it'll be anything near the full amount of Interact content that Manhattan is charging US$399 for, but maybe there will be enough Interact content included with the 5lb Book to make some reasonable inferences about how worthwhile Interact is generally).
Amazon preorder link for new edition of 5lb Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1506247598/
One additional consideration: as confirmed by their product descriptions, buying any of the 4th edition books gives you access to Manhattan Prep's 6 online practice GRE tests. The product descriptions of the new 5th edition books make no such promises. Manhattan sells the 6 practice tests for US $50; if you want both the books and the practice tests, it's cheaper to just buy the 4th edition books new on Amazon (while they last) and get the practice tests included for free.
Side note for anyone interested: I just saw that a new edition of the 5lb Book will be released on December 4th as well, and it's up for preorder on Amazon now. According to its description, the new edition "has been updated to include an online companion of lessons from Interact® for GRE, our revolutionary interactive, on-demand learning platform. In addition, the book now includes new mixed timed sets, a cheat sheet of key math rules, and micro drills to test individual skills." Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1506247598/
Solution:
You can’t. That’s what they mean by “figures are not necessarily drawn to scale”. You have to find some piece of information given in the question to support your claim, otherwise it is as good as taking a shot in the dark. In fact, it is actually worse because the figures are usually drawn in a way to trick you into believing something that is not necessarily true.
In this question, the answer is D because we know nothing about the angles PQR and PRQ. If the length of the segment PQ is equal to the length of the segment PR, then the angles PQR and PRQ are equal and since QS and RS are angle bisectors, then x = y in this case. On the other hand, if PQ > PR, then the angle PRQ is greater than the angle PQR and in this case, y > x. As we can see, there is not a consistent relationship between the two quantities.
Answer: D
Yeah, I forgot to mention my ProctorU experience more on my post, good point. I just cleared my immediate area and desk, to make sure, but they didn't seem to mind about anything else farther away that much, as long as nothing looked suspicious. I even cleared my computer monitor, tower, keyboard, etc. off of my desk to get that out of my way and make room for my laptop and writing pad/eraser. The area beyond my immediate vicinity had a lot of stuff in it (including a bed, shelves of stuff, TV, etc.) but they thankfully found that acceptable. I also was pretty keen on keeping my eyes on my screen (and/or transparent sheet) to avoid looking suspicious at all.
Honestly, I don't even know how much the Proctor was really paying attention, they seemed to rush through the room-checking process and were always a minute or two delayed in responding to my messages (at the beginning and end of break and at the end of the exam). If I had to guess, they probably have dozens or students that they're watching at once, so you'd have to be something really stupid to get flagged or stopped by the Proctor.
F.Y.I: I used these markers:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9VT4N9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Along with the paper and transparent sheet protector since they work the best out of all the ones that I've tried. The expo didn't work that well on the transparent sheet protector, but these ones (which are the ones that my school uses for classrooms--I just happened to have one on me to try out) work best for the sheet protector.
That sucks. What about these? I've used them too and they're easier to hold than the others I linked. They smell more strongly though and don't wipe off quite as easily as the other ones but they're still good. The colors are definitely bolder.
Here is a good example of a whiteboard you can use.

For improving your verbal score, you can learn GRE words quickly using the tweak GRE flashcards.
It has around 1000 words grouped based on their meanings. Something like a group name will be "cheat" and around 10 words that mean cheat will be inside that group.
So during the test even if you cannot recollect the exact meaning, recollecting which group it was in should give you some context.
The app is online available on Android though.

A technique that I employ in such geometric questions is that whether I can manipulate the diagram (increase or decrease certain aspects) while staying within the bounds of the given information, and how those manipulations would affect the answer.
In this case, the point Q can be moved very close to the point R while keeping PR as a diameter and keeping PRQ = 90, and the point Q can also be moved further from R till QR very obviously becomes greater than PR. Hence, D.
The last PowerPrep I used was the free one back in 2019. (not exactly recent) and I remember getting something close to 311 on it.
This year I attempted with much more prep than before and used the official GRE material to test myself.
This has 2 tests included I believe.
I was averaging around 158V and 168Q in these tests at the end. So I think they are a fair indicator of your eventual test performance.
However, I took a lot of the mini-exams by GregMat+ at regular intervals.
You get to know your weaknesses and they test your understanding quite well.
Gregmat+ was the best investment I made for a period of 2.5 months.(quite affordable too)
umm not sure what you saw but you can get the 3 main official books for pretty cheap on amazon!
Tangent to a circle is always perpendicular to the radius (and hence the diameter) at the point of tangency of the circle. Here, the point of tangency is R and as you can see, it’s already indicated that angle PRQ is a right angle. On the other hand, there is no specific relation between the lengths of the diameter and the tangent. You can make QR shorter than PR, equal in length to PR, or longer than PR.

I'm not sure if you'd find it online.
ETS is the company that writes GRE exams. Magoosh is a company that produces GRE-prep material.
Yes, Manhattan is a bit closer to the actual exam than Magoosh is from my experience.
https://z-lib.org/ Here You'll find PDFs, mobi, epubs to almost all books. Just search and download. What I always do is Download an ebook and upload it to Google Play Books, that way it is available on all my devices.
This is super hard to explain in writing. I'm gonna try anyway.
You have to remember that the result of the square root function is positive by definition in order for it to be a function. One of the fundamental properties of functions is that for every input, they produce only one output. You might have heard of the "vertical line test," which tests this property graphically. Try graphing y = sqrt(x) on Desmos and then imagine sliding a vertical line left and right along all values of x. It can only hit the graph once for a given value of x.
Also, the GRE doesn't mess around with imaginary numbers, so the term under a square root has to be greater than or equal to zero.
So let's consider each of the three equations:
Let me know if this still doesn't make sense. There's also a graphical explanation that some students find more intuitive.
So I found it by scrolling a lot through the "New content feed" Unfortunately, it looks like those individual videos are not hyperlinked. The shortcut to finding it would be to go to the "new content feed" page and scroll all the way down till the end, do cmd+f and search for "four keys" and you will find the video.
Hey /u/gregmat if you need https://www.elastic.co/ added to your site, let me know. I'll do it for free.
The odds are stacked against you, but if it’s fundamentals you want, start with a high school math review like those made for the ACT. Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT https://smile.amazon.com/dp/0998584916/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_4H4PY7EA7N8443CH2TWS
I usually recommend either my guide to Khan Academy on this page or the Manhattan GMAT Foundations of Math book, or both.
Khan is great since you can almost always find easy practice for the thing you're working on. Downside is it's sprawling and not organized all that well.
The book I link to is a quicker version, but isn't as comprehensive.
Once you have a better foundation, you'll be able to get more out of practicing.
It's a good idea to group words by meaning. For example, there are a lot of verbs that fall under the umbrella notion of taking something less-than-ideal and making it better:
Grouping these together will make it easier to remember any one of them.
Also, search Google News to see how people use these words. For example, https://www.google.com/search?tbm=nws&q=%22*%20allay%20*%22
Yeah, RCs are often the major stumbling block towards a 160+ verbal for a lot of people. My advice is: focus on improving your retention while you read, by reading the long passages carefully once and trying to answer all the questions without going back to it. Once I realized this, my verbal scores went from mid 150s to high 160s with a near-perfect score on test day.
I used this app for RC practice: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.adityaanand.gre. Try to eventually get the longer 600-800 word passage questions correct with just one slow reading.
Mathematics For MBA By R.S. Aggarwal
I'm using this book for practice(skipping the MBA specific chapters), it has all the sections for GRE Quant section and many practice questions with full solutions given.
I'll use the ETS official practice questions after I've completed this and also I have Princeton Review and ETS official guide book, which has test papers which I'll hopefully practice by creating real test like scenario(timings and all)
PS : IDK if the book I've linked will be available in your region, if not, try to find something similar or you can search if it's PDF version is available on the net.
Thanks ✌🏻
I tried doing that and then realized that I didn't memorize very well, I mean after doing that once or twice I always got the gist of the word (whether its positive or neg), but never the exact def. Then I tried to start reading more books to get them in my vocab (while this was enjoyable it didn't help that much becuase most books have these words spaced out). Then, which was the option I did a week before the test, I started looking up the word on vocabulary.com. IT WAS AMAZING!! Here's a sample entry for the word:
http://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/quisling
A quisling is a traitor, especially one who collaborates with an enemy occupying force for personal gain.
Quisling was tried for treason and executed at the end of the war, and his name became synonymous with traitor and collaborator. The word quisling is not commonly used in the United States, however, probably because the American term for a traitor is "Benedict Arnold," the name of a Revolutionary War turncoat.
I love that website! Reading those tidbits on the word helped put it in context. I also memorized any synonyms or antonyms and this helped alot as well because most of the synonyms or antonyms are other GRE words!! Like vitriol and vituperate are kindof like synonyms. This gave me an edge because even if I didn't know the exact definition I could rule out the words that were the same as the word that fit in the blank and those that are opposite. Hope this was clear and helped.
Interesting question! I'll give it a go. There are 6 odd places out of 11 places total and 6 letters in total that are either M, A, or T.
I'm going to think of the 6 odd places as being independent from the from the 5 even places, because the 6 M, A, and T letters will be shuffled only among the odd places and the 5 letters E, M, I, C, and S will be shuffled only among the even places.
For the letters M, A, and T in the odd places, we need to use the concept of permutations with repition. One can arrange the six letters AAMMTT in 6!/(2!*2!*2!) = 90 different ways when arranged among the 6 odd places.
The even slots are easier, since there is no repetition of letters being arranged in the even slots, so we can calculate that there are 5! = 120 ways we can arrange these letters in the even slots.
This means that there are 90*120 = 10,800 different ways you can arrange M,A, and T in the 6 odd slots and the letters E, M, I, C, and S in the 5 even slots.
Please note that the question asks the shortest distance, the distance between two parallel lines is shown with the red line segment h:

I don't think you can use 2 whiteboards. Only one is permitted. You can also use one A3 sheet in a transparent cover like this - https://www.amazon.in/Zantec-100pcs-Transparent-Paper-Protect/dp/B07K4YX7TK
I wear glasses when I'm at the computer. On my last attempt I didn't bring my own ear plugs so I had to use the large plastic, ear muff kind which hurt my ears after about an hour. Since the area outside of the testing center was quite loud, I was distracted and annoyed by the slight pain on the side of my head. I think that situation detracted from my focus and potentially lowered my score.
I'm gonna bring something like this on my next attempt so that it's not an issue: https://www.amazon.com/3M-90716-80025T-Corded-Reusable-Earplug/dp/B00284DIPK
Thank you for your post! I saw that you had a Magoosh subscription and unfortunately, I don't think I'd be able to have it. However I've been watching all of their videos for conceptual purposes and plan on solving the GRE 8 book set and the Manhattan 5lb. Would you say that'd suffice? How else, according to you, could I compensate for missing out on the Magoosh questions for Quants? Essentially, what would be the best strategy for quants if I'm aiming for 165+ without the Magoosh questions?
I'd be definitely subscribing o Greg's 1-month plan though.
Solution:
To answer the question, we basically need to compare angle PQR to angle PRQ (since x is equal to half of the former and y is equal to half of the latter). While the figure is drawn to make us believe that angle PQR is greater than angle PRQ, we cannot make such assumptions based solely on the way the figure is drawn. If angle PQR is indeed greater than angle PRQ, then x is greater than y as well. However, if angle PQR is equal to angle PRQ, then x = y. It is even possible for angle PQR to be less than angle PRQ. Thus, we don’t have enough information to determine a consistent relationship between the two quantities.
Answer: D
I just bought this one and really like it. Be sure to get skinny markers. The “normal” dry erase markers are too fat for math. i got the ETS set. I liked it a lot. Then corona hit and many schools dropped the gre requirement.
D 180-80=100 Case 1: Triangle PRQ is iscosceles, which would mean that angle R and angle Q would be 50. And x=y, resulting in each angle being 25 degrees.
However, we do not know if the angle is iscosceles or otherwise
Case 2 can be: Angle Q bring 60 and Angle R being 40. In this case x = 30 and R= 20. And in this case, x > y
There can be many more combinations. Hence, due to the lack of clear values of angle Q and angle R, the resulting answer option can only be D
These work well with fine point markers.

It has to be one plain whiteboard or transparent sheet protector! taking the at home gre means that they won't allow pencil/paper to be used to avoid test takers from keeping relevant information regarding questions after the exam ends
there are no restrictions on how many markers/colors/etc, and the size of the whiteboard seems to be up to the discretion of the proctor - more specifically, super large boards may not always be accepted by the proctor. for markers, it really helps to get ultra fine tip markers such as these or even thinner.
I had to get a whiteboard pretty last minute so i ended up just putting a same-day pickup order to fedex for a laminated tabloid sheet (11"x17") and using that as a white board, and it costed about $4.50.
As far as erasers, you can keep a roll of paper towels/tissues, or any dry erase marker works as well! Hope this helps! :)
I found these great erasable german markers (Staedtler) that write pretty much just like a pen (0.6 mm trace): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3HJFGA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
They have been great compared to other fine tip markers. If you buy the ones that say correctable they should come off easily of a whiteboard with a dry eraser or damp cloth. They're a bit pricy but they have a decent amount of ink and the tip doesn't wear easily.

Hey! Good luck getting ready for the test. I took the test last weekend with this board: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081V81YJK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They never asked about the size but they did discuss that there could be no writing on the back.
So, at the beginning before I began the test, the proctor had me show my whiteboard front and back (I got this one and kept it folded up). During the test, you do not need to keep the whiteboard in view. At the break, if you leave your desk, the proctor will have you show them the whiteboard again to make sure its blank. Then at the end, they want you to erase it and show them it is empty.
I used the Barron book, and it had some strategies for getting the right answer without doing the math problems https://www.amazon.com/Barrons-Online-Tests-Sharon-Weiner/dp/1438009151/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Barron+GRE&qid=1600905154&sr=8-2, I can't speak to any of the other books.
That's insane! These say free shipping so maybe they would work? It's the same brand, just only the black markers.
I got this Magnetic Dry Erase Board for Fridge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JCJCMBN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KrnqFbPZ5MEB9. It feels just like a harder piece of paper and comes with good thin pens+ eraser.
It is the 5lb book and the Math Strategies 5th edition by Manhattan Prep. If you want more math questions, they have another series of books based on the math topics that come up in the GRE. It's called the "instructional series guide" - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-Prep-GRE-Strategy-Guides-dp-1937707911/dp/1937707911/ref=dp_ob_title_bk
Please take time to go through each topic! I made so much improvements that way.
Gregmat is REALLY good stuff. For $5 it’s almost worth the money just to try it... but it’s really high quality for a third party tool.
Gregmat will tell you to buy the GRE study material directly from ETS. I completely agree.
I just finished going through “The Official GRE Super Power Pack”. It’s essentially three different books that ETS has smashed into one. The first book’s shows you how the test work and has different problem sets for the different types of math and verbal questions. Then the second and third books are completely dedicated to verbal and quant, respectively. There’s also two practice tests included. All of this material is something like $50 I believe. I bought the ebook version for kindle here:
Official GRE Super Power Pack, Second Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/1260026396/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Vb8gFbZFRTSPZ
Another resource is the two free practice tests on the ETS website, and you can also purchase two more tests at the ETS site as well. Only after exhausting these resources would I consider looking into a tutor or other tools. And honestly, by the time she gets through all of these resources she might be feeling ready to take the test- I know I’m feeling close after going through the combined book and taking the practice tests.
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask follow up questions... although I’m still in college so I can’t speak to the gap year dilemma. I’m sure sell do great though if she prepares!
You can find the book in Libgen.is
Just search for “GMAT advanced Quant”

hey sorry I just saw this, you can definitely use like a napkin or paper towel to wipe the board

the whiteboard I used was the size of a regular sheet of paper and i bought it on amazon here is the link
>ETS material
Thank you for this. Is this an example of the ETS book(s) you are referring to?
Here is the Android App and IOS app for anyone interested
First of all, 158 is not a bad score but it is good that you are ready to work hard to achieve the highest.
At this moment, you should just focus on learning more and more words every day.
Take a few more tests.
Just keep practicing is all I'd say.
Now for GRE Verbal, I only used the Vocab App by Galvanize
Thier app helped me a lot in scoring high. They have created a simple ad-free gamified app for memorizing words and improving the Verbal Section. I'd suggest you to try it out once, too. I'm putting a link to it.
Hope this helps!
All the best.
Hey,
Magoosh and ETS have really good prep courses. But I'd like to suggest one that I had used. It helped me a lot. The personalized study plan was really good and that helped me the most. I am adding a link below, check it out.
Hope this helps!
Good luck.
If you are looking for an easy way to remember GRE words you can use tweak GRE flashcards.
It has around 1000 words grouped based on their meanings. Something like a group name will be "cheat" and around 10 words that mean cheat will be inside that group.
So during the test even if you cannot recollect the exact meaning, recollecting which group it was in should give you some context.
The app is online available on Android though.

For another way to learn GRE words where the words are grouped together based on their similar meanings
I found around 980 words here and it seemed to be an easier way of learning.
