You can find the original short story in the giant collection: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Aquila-Rift-Alastair-Reynolds-ebook/dp/B01FE7KJ2C
You should read the short story. It's been a while since I've read it but it goes into much greater detail, and I think it answers some of your questions.
Beyond Aquila Rift by Alastair Reynolds
This is just one of various short stories in the book, but definitely my favorite. The book also includes Zima Blue.
Beyond the Aquila Rift is also my favorite. You should read the shorty story. Its better than the episode (mainly because it goes into much greater detail).

Its a collection of short stories, it also includes Zima Blue.
Yes, my mistake, long day.
Is his collection of shorts.
Tales from old Earth by Michael Swanwick is a really nice collection of his sci-fi short stories, that I highly recommend. He is the original author of the episode The Very Pulse of the Machine from LD+R season 3, which btw is also included in this book.
An older sci-fi collection, but one that might scratch the LDR itch is Harlan Ellison's Dangerous Visions (Amazon link)
The short story is just “Ice” it’s in the love death and robots anthology. I’m sure it was published elsewhere previously, but that’s where I read it.
Love, Death and Robots: The Official Anthology: Volumes 2 & 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XKRQ6NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5MQT5AP5DW46AJGHWMR3
you're right its part of the Robots vs Fairies anthology, and the story is "Three Robots Experience Objects Left Behind From the Era of Humans for the First Time"
https://www.amazon.com/Robots-vs-Fairies-Dominik-Parisien/dp/1481462350
In the credits of the episodes it says what short stories (and the authors) the episodes are based on. I was wondering about source material, so I did some investigating. Just posted to the sub with sources, but essentially you can get all three seasons' short stories in collections on Kindle (US link).
I've recently discovered that there are anthology collections available on Amazon that include all the LDR short stories:
Seasons 2 and 3 (one book)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094S5HBV8?ref_=dbs_p_mng_rwt_ser_shvlr&storeType=ebooks

You can find both here. I got the 1st one. It's great! Vol 2+3 are on preorder to avoid spoilers I guess.
Also, anyone getting the art book? I tried to share pics but my post was removed as spam https://www.amazon.com/Art-Love-Death-Robots/dp/1789098645
Oh, nobody is saying it's a deal... but it's not unusual for, what? 26 hours of television? $1.92 an episode?
Flash season 1 was $30 before Amazon put it on sale for $20. $50 for 2 seasons seems to be a reasonable non-sale price.
Only merch I've seen is an anthology of all the short stories from the first season. Nice if you want to read the source material. Allegedly, the second season has it's own book coming out eventually.
As far as I can interpret it, he was in a simulation of these "monsters" all the time, where you pretended something to his mind. I don't know why his crew member turned against Greta in this simulation - what I can imagine is that they're all in the same simulation and when that person turned against Greta she was killed in reality.

Why he's back in a simulation at the end...that's left open. Either he begged in horror to be back in the simulation without knowing where he is or he was forced to be.

Heavy Metal's been running for 40 years, the story quality can vary a lot. I collected for a while in the 90s to the early 2000s. Some stories, like Frezzato's Keepers of the Maser run are epic top-shelf stuff. Many are the run-of-the-mill T&A you get so much of in fantasy illustration. Pre-2000s had more weird, out-there, dreamlike or stoner art and stories.
Love, Death + Robots: The Official Anthology
They collected all of the stories they adapted into a single volume.

This has the story for Beyond the Aquila Rift along with several others from the same author. Really liked Diamond Dogs in this collection. https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Aquila-Rift-Alastair-Reynolds-ebook/dp/B01FE7KJ2C/ref=nodl_

Those big jugs you get pretzels in...cat's can't get into em.
Also amazon sells containers specifically for this.
Protip, this is likely bigger than you think. it's about the size of a toaster oven.
Also if we leave it open for a minute the cat loves to get inside it and just monch.
It's Robert Valley's style. He's the man.
Here's one of his shorts "Massive Swerve" https://vimeo.com/41301478
And another short film he made a couple years ago "Pear Cider and Cigarettes" https://www.amazon.com/Pear-Cider-Cigarettes-Robert-Valley/dp/B06X3XSJZG
