While you don’t smoke, your mail carrier or one of the other USPS/FedEx/UPS workers that come into contact with your package prior to being delivered could be the culprit. I have found the best thing to prevent a smoke smell, as well as protecting your item from other hazards (rains, spills, weird smells) is to place it in a plastic bag with a seal (like this). I use these with every single clothing item, whether I use boxes or polymailers, just for that extra level of protection.
Amazon. It is a worthy investment and only cost me ~ $18. The max weight is 50 lbs. Definitely beats using a kitchen scale –– I was very off on weight at times. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/ACCUTECK-W-8250-50bs-Digital-Adapter-Silver/dp/B00SMHWZ42/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=accucheck+scale&qid=1597338451&sr=8-3
It will most likely weigh over 1lb. I'd agree with other posts that 2lbs is around what it'll be. 1-3lbs via FedEx smartpost will be $9.99 and anything over 1lb-5lbs will be $11.50 via UPS. I usually round up just in case so I or the buyer doesn't get stuck with paying the extra postage fee.
Here is the scale I have and would recommend: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SMHWZ42/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_4P3ETXAR1FBXGK1WEWYP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This is a good investment for shipping Also, if you want to ship for free, with usps, you can use pirate ship which is a bit cheaper than the Mercari labels.

I just bought this scale on Amazon for 14 bucks, and I'm happy with it so far. It measures up to 11 pounds, you can zero it out, and you can switch between grams, ounces, milliliters, and pounds/ounces. Even came with 4 batteries and uses 2.
It could come to the buyer with postage due or it might slip by. Be prepared for a negative review from the buyer if that happens. Get a scale so it doesn't happen again and weigh your items with the packaging so you don't get an underweight label. I got mine off of amazon and it weighs up to 110 pounds. It's like this one but red. Accuteck ShipPro 110lbs x 0.1 oz. Digital Shipping Postal Scale, Black (W-8580-110-Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYA0RC2/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_xNXSEbNHDZEK6
I'd say it's probably better to say nothing imo. Even though you are 100% correct, it just sounds like someone is trying to displace a common problem on someone else. For example I used hotels.com get a hotel once, and the concierge had trouble, and was just blaming hotels.com, and I was just thinking to myself "Cooool.... I don't really care??? Just do what you have to do." Of course I was nice in expressing that outloud, but in the end, the buyer just wants you to do what you have to do. So I would say it is probably better to just reply to people about tracking if they ask you, and even then I would just confirm the tracking number for them and wouldn't go into whats going on with Mercari's system.
You can get free bubble envelopes by saving them when you order from amazon, asking friends, family, neighbors to save them for you, or signing up for freebies (75% of the time they come in bubble envelopes).
If you want them to be new then amazon for sure. I had my eye on these but im not going to sell as much next year so i cant commit to buying 500 - 1000 ct. They come out to be 13 to 14 cents each for 4x8s. If you need larger ones, they will cost more.
For mercari I use either bubble mailers or poly bags, so I don’t input dimensions, I just go by weight.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OLOGXWU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
Those are the bags I bought. 100 for $10 and they work for my purposes.
Here is the link to the one I have! I used to sell a lot and this was a life saver. Just make sure you weigh your items with packaging and any protective stuffing.
Good luck!

For clothes I use poly mailers, not expensive and sturdy enough to get the clothes there in one piece. Here's some on Amazon.
Shoes just box it up, add some bubblewrap or Kraft type wrapping paper to prevent it from moving around too much.
Also add in a thank you note. It's a small thing but I've seen positive results from it when selling.
The Accuteck has a 50 lb capacity
I got mine off Amazon. It weighs up to 110 pounds and goes to the nearest 0.1 oz. It's like this one, but red. It has more than paid for itself.
But any shipping scale should work. I definitely recommend a digital shipping scale.
Any small scale should work. I begun with a cheapo kitchen scale. Anything that measures in ounces is worthwhile since First Class is tiered based on weight (4 oz, 8 oz, etc).
I've had a Dymo M10 (10 lb capacity) for a few years and it's been perfect for me. You could even get the M5 (5 lb capacity) if you're only dealing in small things. I have a Brecknell GP250 for large packages, but that isn't helpful for small items.
A scale is a worthwhile investment with postal prices the way they are.
The ones I ordered were room deodorizer types, in tubs. The exact ones I ordered aren't available but these of the same brand are. It took a while, like a week or two. Then I handed it to a non smoker friend and asked them to smell it and tell me what it smelled like. (I didn't mention the smoke.)
No. Get a shipping scale.
Mine is this one except red. https://www.amazon.com/Accuteck-ShipPro-Digital-Shipping-W-8580-110-Black/dp/B00KYA0RC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=19H8PYO767B35&keywords=shipping+scale&qid=1668324476&sprefix=shipping+scale%2Caps%2C140&sr=8-3
Pilling happens on old/worn clothing, even some shirts I've only worn once or twice have pilled, just depends on the fabric! You can easily remove them with a disposable razor, or there's a pill remover that's made for clothing, like this one!
https://www.amazon.com/Accuteck-ShipPro-Digital-Shipping-W-8580-110-Black/dp/B00KYA0RC2
I use this one. It’s got a separate display for that reason and it has fold out flaps for unstable items or things like sweatshirts or jackets
I use the Accuteck scale.
There's no way it weighs 4 oz for the $3.72 rate or 8 oz for the $4.87 rate. Tell them you can't change the shipping.
Also buy a scale. There's plenty of them on Amazon. Mine is this one but red. https://www.amazon.com/Accuteck-ShipPro-Digital-Shipping-W-8580-110-Black/dp/B00KYA0RC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?crid=3ASHW2HZAQ60W&keywords=shipping+scale&qid=1664336149&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjIxIiwicXNhIjoiNC40NCIsInFzcCI6IjQuMjQifQ%3D%3D&sprefi...
Some sellers also use a Kitchen scale. But definitely buy a scale.

This is the one I was using before I got an actual postage/shipping scale. But it works just as well as the shipping one I got so I didn’t even need to get a new one. I just thought it would be more accurate 🤦♀️ I’m sure there’s cheaper like others said. But, I get not wanting to spend extra when it’s not essential. I’m a single mom so I get pinching pennies! Like I said in my other comment, I thought getting a scale was essential since Mercari suggested shipping was so off the 2 times I tried to use it. But you can just use a scale you have to weigh yourself or if you don’t have one maybe a friend or family member has one you can borrow?
If they claimed the item is not authentic, Mercari will most likely approve the return. If they do, make sure to request that you want your item back. You have to wait until they return the game and if it is not the one you sent, you have to do a return dispute claim. You do have to be able to prove that what they sent it not what you sent to them. If you can't they will unfortunately side with the buyer. You have to dispute the item within 24 hours of receiving it back. Mercari can be difficult when it comes to authenticity concerns. I had it happen to me, I was even able to prove my item was authentic before the item was sent back by the buyer and Mercari still let them return it. My buyer lied about authenticity (had buyer's remorse) because they know Mercari's strict rules on counterfeit items and knew they would approve the return.
Here's a tip, I use security void stickers on some of the expensive items I sell. I use them to identify that the item is my actual item in the event of a return. They also are useful to prove if an item may have been tampered with. They don't leave residue on your item. Here's what I use: https://www.amazon.com/Non-Transfer-Expensive-SECURLabel-N2560-Blue-TamperSeals-Group/dp/B09V5111BB/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=OEZMVGVW321&keywords=non+transfer+security&qid=1656196418&sprefix=non+transfer+security%2Caps%2C357&sr=8-3

Here's a postal scale I can't recommend enough, I purchased it over 2 years ago and it's still holding up strong without any issues or inaccuracy. I've probably weighed parcels on it over 2000 times now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KYA0RC2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not an affiliate link btw, I'm not special enough for those haha. Seriously though, if you intend to sell more than just a handful of items, get this scale. It's dummy cheap and has a 110lb weight capacity, as well as a display separated from the scale so you can actually see the weight reading when weighing large items on it.
Though, if you're only selling a few random very light items here and there, get a kitchen scale instead. A kitchen scale has more uses, so it'd be a smarter purchase in that sense.
A majority of the time, phones cases are going to be in the 4oz weight zone. Most all phone cases will be fine wrapped in a bit of bubblewrap and thrown in a bubble mailer. For more brittle/fragile cases you should pack them in small boxes. If the phone case is particularly bulky or the box your using adds enough weight, the package can end up going into the 8oz price range instead.
Amazon (as in, the boxes stuff I order comes in). Actual product boxes (toaster box, cat food box, etc).
I use very small boxes for things I sell on Etsy so sometimes I use those for Mercari stuff. 6x4x3, 4x4x2, etc. I buy those on Amazon.
If I don’t have to right size I cut down a larger box to the right dimensions.
This is my absolute favorite tape for taping up boxes/building cardboard forts. Soooo much better than clear packing tape. Can’t wait to get a thermal printer so I can finally rid myself of clear packing tape.

I bought a NefLaca Bluetooth thermal printer off Amazon on Black Friday. It works just fine, no problems, but can be tricky to figure out at first because you have to screen shot the label, crop and save as a pdf, then load into the NefLaca app to print. I ordered free UPS labels from UPS and those work perfectly
they have one for $8.99 on amazon. i asked a lady once on etsy where she got hers! I use a Munby I got on Amazon. I've had it two years. I just crop and select what I need to print from the label in Adobe Acrobat. Doesn't take long.
Amazon!
To use it, you either need a wet kitchen sponge or a Water Activated Tape Dispenser
It was a learning curve at first but I’ve been using this stuff since last year and I’ll never go back to plastic tape!
I actually collect Funko pops and know what box they are referring to. It’s not a standard Amazon box, it comes in a decorative box, so saying they wanted the original Amazon box is misleading because most people here will assume they are referring to a shipping box.
To add, I’m not advocating for the buyer, they should’ve read the description and just looked at the photos and noticed that the pops didn’t come with box they came in. Just giving context of what the buyer was referring to. Plus, this item is still available on Amazon, for almost the same price now.

If your items are small. Usually kitchen scales have very low weight limits.

Yes, you always need the weight.
Mercari's recommended shipping is often wrong and very unreliable. Always weigh & measure your items in box or polymailer/ envelope with packaging materials to get an accurate weight.

> I think I still don't get it really but I also never heard of Google Voice either
Google Voice is a free (for personal use) VoIP service like Ooma or Vonage. When you sign up, you get a real phone number with SMS text messaging capabilities.
You use the service with an app on your phone and can even forward the GV number to an actual phone number - both cell and landline. To get the GV service, you have to register with your Google/Gmail account and add your mobile number. They will send a verification code to your REAL mobile number to validate.
This is what the scammers are after. They will ask for your mobile phone number and use that to register a new account. Google will then send the verification codes to finish account creation. You give those to the scammer and voila! The scammers have a clean Google Voice account but attached to your phone number. When they scam people and if an investigation happens, you're the one who must deal with the fallout, not them because it's YOUR mobile that's attached to the service.
I personally use a "burner" phone with just voice and SMS to do Mercari/OfferUp and eBay transactions. It's to add a layer of security between me and scammers and a method to keep my "real" phone number clean (as much as it can) from text message SPAM. You can do this with Google Voice. All these selling platforms want your mobile number; instead of giving out your personal number, you can sign up for GV and use that number instead.
While I have a physical "burner" phone with a different number, I also have GV as a third level of protection. I don't use it much, but if I run into a questionable character on OfferUp or Craigslist, that's the number I give them.
I agree there are a ton of choices! I had a hard time choosing! I read tons of reviews! I finally went with these because I liked I could do warm, cool, or both colors for lighting. They came with remotes too so you can use them to change the color of the lights, to increase or decrease brightness, turn them on/off. Before these ones I had 1 soft box that was a different kind of bulb, not LED, and after using it a few times for a few weeks all of a sudden it started flickering and shorting out. I returned it and was like, I’m going with LED this time 😂 It wasn’t as high of voltage or brightness, but I got 2 instead of just 1 so it made up for it.
I use these trash bags from Amazon (I can typically get them on sale for $19.99). For 30 gallon bags, it's about $0.16/bag, it seems like the average price is about $0.30/bag. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/Neat-Gallon-Drawstring-Trash-Bags/dp/B08DCGBRDX
Since these are both black and white, you can choose which side you want (I prefer white, that way I can write Fragile or Handle with care). Then place the box right inside the bag (or cut the plastic bag), fold it like I'm wrapping a present and viola.
Bonus is that this technique helps keep the moisture out, incase it gets wet or splashed on in the rain.
Best advice I can give you: Get a scale!!! You’ve just been lucky so far, if your items have been overweight, to not get caught yet. You won’t get ‘in trouble’ but you will be charged for it. If you’re going to continuing to sell you need a scale. I got mine off Amazon & it comes quick. I’ll link mine for you. If you don’t like it they have similar/diff colors.
I think its a bit complicated because these artists would have to come forward to prove or claim that it's theirs and it's a whole process of essentially "no, I did it first" which can be hard to prove in some cases or more trouble than it's worth.
It's why a lot of artists don't even bother with those cheap generic sticker packs from Amazon or Wish, and they sell thousands of them. It's just a lot to deal with.
Seconded, I bought this one and it works great for clothing items or small boxes!
Yep, I bought this small scale on Amazon for $20 and it works great! You may need one with a bigger platform if you sell bigger items, but I sell mostly clothing using small boxes or poly mailers, and it's perfect for that.

This is what I use. It has been accurate so far, but I still usually double check with the post office just to make sure it's correct. I've had it for several months and it seems to be working perfectly for items between 2 oz - 2+ lbs. The heaviest thing I've weighed and shipped was 7lbs for a box of comics.

Cheap, work great
I sell quite a bit on eBay and I use these packzon labels I get on Amazon! They're great! You can print two labels per page! Just cut them to size and stick them on! Also like the other person said, I always cover the labels with tape in case it rains!
I use a non-digital mechanical scale Specifically this one: here. I like it better than a digital scale because you don't need to recalibrate it ever.
No prob. The box is S-16711 on uline. And I use 3-4 of these air pillows to fill in the extra space.

To protect the boxes I loosely wrap them in bubble wrap, also from uline. If you find a good non-amazon supplier for inflated air pillows, I'm all ears.

We sell records now. It is best to buy specific vinyl mailers. We use these...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CTIJNQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We like them a lot, and when we use them up, we will definitely buy more from them. You can fit 3 comfortable in there, even with perforated bubble wrap between/outside of records. You can probably fit more, but we like things to be well protected, and its the most any 1 person has bought anyways, so for now that's what we will stick with.
And there is a market, but it's kind of slow, at least if you sell common records, which we do. We have listed about 30ish records in the last 10 days and have sold 11 so far. So it's kind of slow going, but works.
Just FYI if you don't ship Media Mail, shipping charges will be expensive. Many vinyls would end up costing $10 to ship because they can easily be over a pound (Just checked a single gatefold record and it came to 1.7 pounds ), which would make it impossible to sell some common vinyls, which are only worth $10 with free shipping anyways. Just do the Media Mail, even if something happens, you are still protected as long as its a cheap item. We have sold 2 things using non-Mercari labels which arrived "damaged" (at least one of the buyers I think was lying lol) and they still paid us.
Plus it lets you be more competitive with pricing.
I buy these. $50 for 500 4x8 polymailers

Every seller needs a scale BEFORE listing anything. Unless you want to ship on your own and do flat rate, which gets expensive.
I got mine off Amazon. It's like this one, but red. https://www.amazon.com/Accuteck-ShipPro-Digital-Shipping-W-8580-110-Black/dp/B00KYA0RC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=shipping+scale&qid=1598142609&sr=8-4
Always weigh with item, packaging and box before listing. Also measure the box before listing. Especially, with FedEx and UPS. The size of the box can make a difference in price.
Also if you're shipping books or CDs you can select Free ship and then hit ship on your own. You can then use Media Mail to ship books but you can NOT use any Priority packaging. If caught you or the buyer will have to pay a postage due fee. The book can't have ANY advertising so things like a Magazine or Comic Book is ineligible. Previews on a VHS Tape or DVD don't count. Visit USPS.com and really read what you can and can't ship via media mail. If in doubt, don't ship it Media Mail. (Like cards do not qualify.)
Finally, and I can't stress this enough. Buy a shipping scale if you don't already have one. You need this BEFORE you list anything. (Unless you want to do free shipping and only use Flat Rate Boxes and or Envelopes, which can get expensive.) I got mine off Amazon. It weighs up to 110 pounds and goes to the nearest .1 oz. It's like this one but red. https://www.amazon.com/Accuteck-ShipPro-Digital-Shipping-W-8580-110-Black/dp/B00KYA0RC2/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=shipping+scale&qid=1593830790&sprefix=shipping+&sr=8-4
However any shipping scale will do.
Don’t get the Walmart ones! Target has slightly better quality ones but the one I like the most is from amazon but not sure how long it’ll take to ship if you get it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WCTS9J6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GiKOEb80BQDZJ
I finally picked up a really inexpensive decent scale a couple of weeks ago on Amazon that I highly recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/ACCUTECK-W-8250-50bs-Digital-Adapter-Silver/dp/B00SMHWZ42
I got it after the janky old plastic analog kitchen scale I used to use finally broke, since then the options were to either take the risk of estimating weights incorrectly or go to the post office every time.
I have a food scale that I love and use for shipping. This is it. I use it 50/50 food/shipping but it works super well, the screen pulls out so you can weigh stuff in boxes easily.
