OnHub still does not support DDNS but I've used DDclient on my home server (and I believe it could also work on a gateway itself). Also, their paid Google Domains service supports DDNS functionality. Combine that with OnHub port forwarding, a daemon DDclient, plus daily cron job for good measure and possibly overkill. This is a decent workaround! :)
There's a product called PFsense that can turn an old computer into a router. It supports all kinds of unusual configurations, including VPN routing. I'd recommend PFsense on a low-power machine (like an Atom) if you want to do something like this.
OnHub is very much designed to be simple and easy to maintain. It's a strong radio and it automatically keeps itself up to date. That's it. If you really want to use the two together, you can connect a PFsense router to your modem to handle the advanced routing, then use the OnHub to provide wireless.
Have you tried HomeAssistant (https://home-assistant.io)? I've been running it in an old raspberry pi and it's really impressive, lots of plugin and easy, kinda of, to configurate. I wish the interface was better, but I'm also being lazy to write a CSS and improve it...
I'd go with something that has a low profile connector jacket as well as it'll allow the shell to snap into place more easily:
I bought the usb to dc tip cables plus the adapter tips . works great for all my needs.
Google Wifi is just another WiFi router is marketed under the name OnHub. As per https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices
Thanks for heads up was able to snag another asus onhub router. Think it will provide much better performance over the Google wifi unit
I have Verizon FIOS gigabit internet and I too had the same router you did and I had lag. I purchased the EdgeRouter Lite 3 port router and all my issues went away. Heres the link to the site https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-lite/ Heres the link to the amazon page I ordered from https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CPRVF5K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 My setup is EdgeRouter 3> Netgear Gigabit Switch>(2) Google OnHubs one on either side of my house and this setup works well. All my other machines are hard wired to the Netgear Switch. If you do decide to get the EdgeRouter 3 make sure before you disconnect your old router that you release the DHCP lease and then unplug it right after that way when you plug the new router in it will pull a new DHCP lease. Also I'm assuming your have Ethernet from the ONT? Hope this helps :)
I have just two of these bulbs with my OnHub, but I haven't had any disconnect issues. I have noticed occasionally that Google Home will tell me that one of the lights is not connected, but it still turns on/off with it's sibling (a pair for the kitchen).
Anyone have any specific success in getting either this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CW4AR9K?psc=1 or this: https://www.amazon.com/Security-DIGOO-Surveillance-Wide-Angle-Detection/dp/B06X3R1H5M/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1492723549&sr=1-3&keywords=outdoor+wifi+camera
up and running on their Onhub?
do you have coax in the both rooms?
this might be a useful solution, if you have your heart set on "gig" speeds. https://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Bonded-Ethernet-Adapter-ECB6200K02/dp/B013J7O3X0
This morning I saw Google Wifi listed on amazon (Sold by Amazon.com) for preorder and ship date of Dec 1st. Went there tonight and see amazon pulled the listing. This was the listing, but no longer works: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01MDJ0HVG/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
I think there was a thread a month or two back with the same question, you can pbb see more answers there.
I've been using the Zoom 5341J for 3 years and so far it has been able to keep up with Comcast's speed increases in my area. I'm on "Blast" tier and get about 180 down 10 up. They're well reviewed and cheap on Amazon:

You could also put your Netgear in bridge mode (modem only) and hold off until DOCSIS 3.1 hardware and service starts rolling out.
You want a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, with 8 x 4 channel bonding. This one fits the bill, and it's $47 shipped when you "clip" the $10 coupon in the listing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004UGG5KE/ref=vp_c_A8U8EMKS81HDC?tag=slickdeals&ascsubtag=323057c2a65f11e5a3a0626d4d7f19930000&ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
It's already explained on the PlayStore updated app from today :D
