The problem is that DS-Digital
is not a monospaced font.
I used the Webfont Generator of Font Squirrel. If you you upload the Digital-7 font you can download a new generated font file.
This works. I guess he realigned the font.

What kind of icons do you mean? Actual images? That is not possible. But there are so called icon fonts, like Font Awesome that provide many icons in the form of regular characters. See the wiki for more information about those. You can copy those directly into the config but you also need to add the appropriate font in the bar section.
