This trail is one of our favorites. A short there-and-back to a peak that has arguably the best view of the three Shasta's (Dam, Lake, and Peak). Pack a lunch and eat at the picnic table at the top. While the trail is a bit of a climb, it is easy enough to take along novice/ younger hikers. Keep an eye out for mountain bikers that share the trail, though.
It does get pretty hot here. This is a weather station I have in my back yard, hit 118 one year. That being said, the bad heat lasts 4-6 weeks. The rest of the year isn't bad at all.
1-2 acres isn't hard to find. Fire can be a problem, though anywhere in the valley & near Redding is usually fine. If you do consider properties in the rural areas ensure zero brush or trees anywhere close to your house. Keep your gutters clean and you'll be okay. We're out in the Igo/Ono direction, but have a huge cleared fire break around our house--no fire has touched us, yet.
Mountain lions and black bears are a thing (they love my garbage cans), but the closer into the valley you get the less you'll see them.
Yup, I know people who lost their homes in the Thomas Fire, it actually got a ton of rain really quick. https://weather.com/forecast/regional/news/2018-01-09-california-flooding-debris-flows-burn-areas

Redding frequently makes lists of the worst places to live, most miserable people, etc. This is one of the more recent lists that Redding has been a part of, coming in at #3.

(FYI this is a copy/ paste answer from a previous thread, but I always recommend this hike because it is short, easy, and the view is awesome. Have fun!)
I just bought them on amazonamazon but they’re pretty cheap and the stops have really small screws compared to normal skates so I don’t recommend them but they work haha
