The inatek adapter the other person suggested is hit and miss since the manufacturer changed some components in the build, so you might end up getting one that does not work with the snes.
Personally I'd recommend this PSU for the A500 Mini, I've been using it for months now while developing RetroAami and it works perfectly fine, it also as a very handy inline on/off switch which is a must have when it comes to the A500 Mini as the A500 Mini only has a "Standby" power switch that is useless when the A500 Mini locks up or crashes...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09M9NMRVV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00
Most important thing to note is: Make sure you buy/ use a PSU that has at least 3Amps of power, anything less than that then you WILL run into issues with random freezes/ crashes when trying to run RetroArch on the A500 Mini...
I recommend the 8bitdo retro receiver, and the mod kit they sell on their website that lets you convert the classic mini controller to wireless Bluetooth.

You mention you are using an SD card with an SD card reader, not sure if you mean the SNES Mini has been modded internally with an SD card mod but if it has and you are now trying to use an external USB Drive as well then it won't work as the two will conflict with each other, you can only use one or the other...
If you meant you are using an external SD card and external reader then those are most likely the source of your problems and it could be down to simply being the SD card is not fast enough or the SD card reader is too slow. It's very unlikely anything to do with the PSU as the original adapter at 1Amp is more than enough power to run the SNES Mini along with an OTG device and USB Drive...
I've been using 256GB USB Drive for years now on the SNES Mini and have no issues with them at all, your best bet is to ditch the SD card method and get yourself a USB Thumb/ Flash Drive (recommend 64GB at least should be more than enough for most people)
SanDisk UltraFit Drives are the best one to go for...
(these type)...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Flash-Drive-Read/dp/B07855LJ99/
Just get a basic usb hub, maybe something like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GHSSAQ4
But mind you, the stock emulator does not support 3/4player games, you need retroarch and the genesis gx plus core to play games that allow for more than 2 players.
The cause will most likely be one of the following...
If you are using an actual real Hard Drive that of course needs time to spin up to speed before any data can be read from it or even be able to read it's structures/ layout from it.... then...
The SNES Mini will have a specific time it waits to see if something is connected to the USB port and if nothing is found in that time it will either hang or simply think nothing is connected and boot up as normal as a stock SNES...
You might get it to work if you make sure the drive is powered on and spinning up to full speed before you turn the SNES Mini on...
Other possibility might be the partition size especially if it's 4TB. It simply might not be something the SNES Mini can handle, Only thing you can do there would be to split it into smaller partition sizes and see if that works...
Personally I'd say it's best to go with a USB Drive than a real Hard Drive, you can get one cheap enough and they are lot more convenient than have a real Hard Drive hooked up to your Mini...
I only use the SanDisk Ultra Fit USB Drives, they are some of the fastest and most reliable around and world perfectly with the SNES Mini...
Like this and of course you can get them in many different sized storage capacities...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Flash-Drive-Read/dp/B07855LJ99/
On the C64 Mini unpowered hubs worked OK as long as you used low powered devices. Something like this should be enough: [OcioDual 4 USB 2.0 Port Adapter

While I only use SNES Mini's myself all I can tell you is, after buying & testing various different brands of USB flash drives over the past few years, then the best, fastest and most reliable ones I've found are the SanDisk UltraFit Flash Drives...
They are the only ones everyone I personally know with a SNES Mini uses and use them myself. None of us have had any issues with them over the years and after testing them against other different brands (SamSung/ Integral and a number of others) then the SanDisk ones seemed to perform slight better than all those other for both read & write speeds...
NOTE: The above info is based on the "Ultra Fit" range of drives and not any other type of San Disk drives. Also I have only ever bought, tested and used drives with capacities ranging from 16 GB too 256 GB and they almost all perform the same for reading and writing except the 16 Gb ones which were fractionally slower than all the rest in the range but I don't think they make the 16GB versions anymore...
These type here in this link...

I bought these on a whim from Amazon for a few family members and their Raspberry Pi setups: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XM5FR1L/

I think the build quality is very good considering the price and what my expectations were for a pair of off-brand controllers. The biggest issue I ran into was one of the controllers arrived without the USB dongle and I got a replacement.
The buttons are clicky and the latency was low, which made them winners for me.
Sorry, no experience with this particular one. I have a cable similar to this one:
https://www.amazon.com/USB-OTG-Cable-Splitter-Compatible/dp/B079J5MWYY/
Which it’s the same principle and works fine for me.
:D, now we're talking
yeah, people use OTG adapters or hubs to use more storage, something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VVNNQ8Q that goes on the back of the mini in the micro usb port.
if you're just adding a bunch of games to your mini, and have no desire to add a USB storage, there is no need to use my script. you can just create a folder "childhood games" and put them games in there.
my script is only for those with many roms. like I have 4000 roms, sorted by console and genre in hundreds of folders. With my script I added additional collection folders, like Childhood games/Castlevania/Contra/Disney/mario/my ass, where I place shortcuts of the games stored in my console/genre folders. so my Castlevania collections consists of all NES/SNES/GB/GBA/GBC Castelvania games and so on.
For EVERYONE who wants to use more than one USB device for S-NESC:
I tested the SUYAMA OTG with 4 USB Ports for 2 days with many cores, games, movies and so on.
I have 3 devices plugged in the OTG, NO breakdown!
Features: - 4 Ports - each Port feels strong and has a tight fit for the device (small feathers are "snapping" the contacts down to the USB Port) - great design and thicker lines to the console than other OTGs - deluxe feel (haptic) - reliable (48h non-stop tested)
Very good replacement product regarding to the "good old" Inateck

These are good, as far as SanDisk, I recommend SanDisk for those, seems to have better results.
I got two of the 8Bitdo NES30 Pro Wireless Bluetooth Game Controller that work efficiently on my SNES Classic and cannot fault it.
I personally prefer these OTG as they give you some flexibility, I also can confirm they work on all the mini classics..

Since you seen to be knowledgeable on the mini, let me ask, how modern if a console will the nes mini emulate?
I got some snes wireless controllers from Amazon btw. So far so good https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771DR45B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_4SXE4DNVJTTAWX7SNBAA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Facebook Marketplace I found a few chancers trying their luck selling the consoles £100+.
Gotta laugh at the price of the SNES Mini on Amazon
Are you looking for something with loose-ish cords? Because I feel like the spacing between the HDMI and micro USB ports on those are not uniform.
If you want a low-tech solution, you can use cable clips to keep the cords ready without them being a messy pile when not in use.
I'm not a fan of the angled OTG personally, I've been using these ones from amazon and work a treat . https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FY9Z9GD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_3MV8GJ0WJWYAZBNHZ37Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Try a cheap composite converter and set the mini to output stretched. The TV will display it as 4:3 which will correct the stretch. It won't be perfect but it should do it.

Not quite sure what you mean there to be honest but here's what you should be doing when it come to using the Virtual Ram Hmod...
Firstly the hmod itself HAS to be added and run from the SNES Mini itself and it will be set up that way when you use HakChi to add the hmod (ie: when the hmod is installed it is stored on the Mini's internal memory and run from there at boot up)...
The hmod when run will create a "virtual swap file" on your USB drive and it is that file it uses as the virtual extra memory. That swap file of course can't be stored on the SNES Mini's internal memory as the SNES Mini simply doesn't have enough storage space for such a file to begin with...
Choice of USB storage devices can affect its performance, personally I only use the following USB drives/ storage devices and have no issue with them whatsoever (tested quite a few other brands over the years and these ones I found perform best when it comes to the SNES Mini)...
SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive
Those are the drives I'd recommend for use with your SNES Mini... :-)
This is what I bought, based off a YouTube video where the guy said he used it and it worked. It came as a 2 Pack so I guess I can try the other one. But I said if I plug controller 2 into the cable it works fine in two player games. So that tells me the USB cable works, right?
Ditch that and find one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Adapter-Compact-Compatible-Smartphones/dp/B00OCBXIY8
I use this for storage via the SD port (currently 32GB), and then the additional USB ports for extra controllers.
I did also buy a USB/wifi dongle, but never bothered trying to get it to work so won't opine on that.
There's a bit of trial and error though as not all of these hubs work as expected, but I did buy two when they were still available on AMZN and both worked fine.
Gah, I wasn't paying attention to which subreddit this was posted in. Sorry about that.
The NES Classic controller uses an I2C protocol. The spec's based off of the Wii "Nunchuk" and Wii Classic Controller. There's also some Arduino Libraries, as well as hardware that lets you attach the control to an Arduino project without having to permanently damage it.
Could be a number of issues from a poor connection on the OTG/ USB device, low power on your power supply to simply being a slow USB storage device or one that's needing reformatted or cleaned up...
I only OTG/USB storage devices myself on the SNES Mini and have no issues like you describe above despite the USB storage devices being filled with several thousand games...
I use USB SanDisk Ultra Fit drives formatted as FAT32 and those very cheap right angled generic OTG devices and have no issues with them at all...
Not sure what type/ brand of USB storage device you are using but the first thing I'd try is back up the data on it, reformatting it and placing the data back and see if that helps...
If it doesn't then try another type/ brand of USB storage device & personally I'd recommend these San Disk ones for the best hassle free results...

In case you tangle with this kind of thing in the future, the best type of wall adapter to use is one that outputs 5v 2a. Something like this would work pretty well. A lot of times if you look for power adapters made to work with a raspberry pi they'll be what you're after, since that device also has trouble with weak USB power.
So found out the problem was not the overclock, but the controller I had. I forgot I got some blu-tooth SNES controllers recently the same time I did the overclock mod. Because everything was fine with the main menu I didn't expect it to be the reason. Some reason though it works 50/50 and sometimes it will not respond for any reason. Switched to a plugged Genesis controller and everything worked fine.

This is the one I got so don't make the same mistake and waste bucks on this garbage.

This is the OTG adapter I use. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B083WML1XB/
I think they are all somewhat flimsy. I velcroed mine to my NES Mini so that moving the unit wouldn't put any stress on the cable.
This is my OTG of choice is this one from Amazon, Looks to to be on offer at the moment if you have prime...https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FY9Z9GD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks guys. I am using Hakchi CE 3.8 with this OTG adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083WML1XB/
And this flash drive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7P4SY4/
To clarify, I already got the OTG device and the flash drive to work very well on an NES Classic that I have. So I think that means I screwed something up in the Hakchi install on the SNES.
For the SNES, I started by installing Hakchi on a different computer than I did for the NES Classic. I wasn't sure if there would be an issue if I had used both systems with the same Hakchi install so I wanted to avoid that. I then installed all of the requisite emulator HMODS on the SNES and all of the bios files.
For the flash drive, I synced the games using the computer with the original Hakchi install so I wouldn't have to transfer all of the games to the other computer.
The SNES turns on and boots just fine and even shows the splash screen PNG that I made just for that device. But it doesn't recognize or load any of the games from the flash drive. The interface you see is the one that shows the 21 SNES games.
