For anyone who isn't on one yet, ProtonVPN is S tier for both privacy and bandwidth. It can saturate most WIFI networks and you get a new IP every time. Consistent 220Mbps. You get 10 concurrent connections so you can share it with your whole house.
If you're looking for an affordable yet sturdy backpack recommendation, I can vouch for the AmazonBasics laptop backpack. I've had it for 4 years and ongoing, and used it daily for school, work and travel. Still good as new. It has plenty of room for a laptop, iPad and books. Pretty sure it was like $25 back in the day, but I'd still buy it at its current price.
You only need to make reservations for Friday night dinner. Hillel is not open on Saturdays or Sundays, and all other meals you pay when going in.
Install the "Transact Mobile Ordering" app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blackboard.mobileorder
There may be some setup where you login with your Penn key or something, I don't remember
Scroll down to where it says "Falk Cafe", and click on "Shabbat".
Select your payment option (usually Meal Swipes)
Select "Undergrad Shabbat Dinner"
(There's a second option, "Undergrad Shabbat Lunch Reservation", where they prepare a bag of food for you to pick up on Friday night (intended to be eaten on Saturday for lunch))
Select any special dietary needs, or "None"
Select "Add to Order"
Select "Checkout"
idk the lighting setup, can you just buy brighter bulbs and switch them out? I got LED bulbs off Amazon for my desk lamp (I think it was this one) and it's super bright. Split the cost of a pack with your roommates.
It entirely depends on you. My suggestion is to go to the Apple Store on Walnut and feel out 11 vs 12.9.
I personally use a 12.9 because I like working with a larger screen. Notating PDF’s is more “true” to a US letter sized paper, I can multitask easily, and using Screen Mirroring I basically have a second monitor with me at all times.
I also have a 13 inch MacBook and yes it’s basically the same size if that gives you an idea.
Biggest downside is your bag WILL be heavy. No going around it. Don’t get any fancy cases for the iPad because it’ll make your bag even heavier to the point of making you regret buying the 12.9.
I suggest something like this.
You should probably use this textbook since it's the one they used up until recently and based the lecture recordings on:
https://www.amazon.com/Differential-Equations-Linear-Algebra-Stephen-ebook/dp/B01B7OIKTU.
The material from the last two chapters is not covered in 240, and you can skip over all sections that pertain to applications.
Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5... thing is a beast and can run full desktop workloads using it's 8-core ryzen. I've also been taking all my notes and doing homework using a stylus. It's only $800

But if you really want: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08M5CCLKH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is what I got also just in case but I don't think it's worth it. 23.99$ from Ship and Sold from Amazon. Pretty good price for the recent uptick in price for them. But I plan on using surgical all the time, as I have all semester
Can you tell what opening they're coming and going through? Move furniture, appliances, etc. and find holes and cracks — they say that mice can squeeze through any whole that's larger than a dime, or even the width of a pencil.
Buy copper mesh or steel wool (you can find it on Amazon, like this) and fill any gaps that you might find.
I'm currently a sophomore in the DMD program, and while both Mac and Windows would work, I would go for a Windows laptop if possible. I took the introductory graphics class (CIS 460) over the fall semester and you are right that it was done entirely in C++ and OpenGL. For the final Minecraft project especially, one of my teammates was using a Mac and her computer struggled with running it (granted, we did add a bunch of heavy shader features). There are also later classes like GPU Programming which may require Windows, but I haven't taken those so I am not sure.
A Windows laptop is also really helpful if you want to go into general 3D work (like in Maya, Blender, etc.) I got this one for $1500 and it's been totally worth it, especially since I do a lot of work in Blender. The one I linked doesn't appear to be at a reasonable price anymore but I'm sure you can find a similar one.
None of this is to say that Mac won't work (other than the not supporting OpenGL thing, not sure about that), but in my opinion a good Windows laptop will make your life a lot easier. Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions, and I'll answer as best I can!
First, set up a zoom account with your school email address. Then go here and request an upgrade to zoom education account. It might take 3 days for them to process the request.
Todoist has its own internal calendar but it doesn't push alerts AFAIK. Looked it over again and forgot that I actually do have it linked into my GCal to the point where it works reliably enough I forgot about it. There's a writeup here about how to get things set up so you can gauge if it meets your needs.
Penn WiFi is great, Penn Ethernet is even better. I would highly recommend a wired connection for your Switch. Ethernet in the high rise dorms on a computer: https://www.speedtest.net/result/8071480163
I will add WiFi results later, but usually it's 100-200 Mbps download/upload and 10-20 ms ping.

And yes, the desktop version is totally fine for most anything you can think of. The paid options just give you the ability to put stuff online/collaborate with others.
Instead of a bedside table, I got this bedside bag thing that worked rly well
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074M7T3Z5?tag=viglink127147-20 kinda like this, it was about $10 so not expensive
They're like $7 on Amazon, plus you can just return it when you're done with it
