You're an amazing mom, because you're there for your daughter. Even if you need to run to the bathroom to take care of yourself, you're still a great mom.
I'm a SAHD, and there are still times I need to bolt to the bathroom while watching my daughter, whom is now 3. I'm sure you have ample advice on taking care of your UC symptoms, so here's my UC parental LPT. I use a WiFi camera to monitor our living/dining room. It's $40 on Amazon right now, which is the best price I've seen for it. It's got an app so you can pull up the video feed on your phone on the toilet. And the camera has full tilt/zoom control. That way, even if you have to run to the bathroom, you can still have the peace of mind knowing you've got an eye on your daughter.
Many states have passed the Restroom Access Act (Ally's Law) for people with specific medical conditions to have access to bathroom. You can also request for a card here.
In any case, I too have a similar set up, but in my car in case of an emergency in the middle of a drive. It's a bucket but with a toilet seat that you can get on Amazon
I second the low-residue diet suggestions. Pasta with butter and salt (maybe a little parmesean cheese), crackers that you thoroughly chew, and chicken and rice soup (if you live near a Greek diner, get lemon chicken and rice soup--so healing!). Here's the Mayo Clinic's low-res diet page. [Edit: plain crackers without seeds or whole grains]
Gas-X can definitely help sometimes! You can ask your doctor for a Dicyclomine prescription as well, that can help sometimes. I would also highly recommend this heating pad to strap around your gut! I also use medical marijuana to help me sleep and help with the pain.
Dude...
Your butthole will thank you a million times over.
I had SUPER BAD acne scars and color skin discoloring with A LOT of dark spots and my go to lotion was thisskin tone corrector this could help after you finished dealing with the cystic acne
I have that book too! Have both a physical and ebook forms of this book! It has great recipes. Not sure what to do about homemade yogurt though since apparently the company of the yogurt starter that’s SCD compliant was bought out and the product has changed. Surprise surprise, the new ones aren’t nearly as good and often have dead bacteria in them.
The diet helped my symptoms a lot but was occasionally left quite hungry so maybe I was missing something. I did stop the diet when I was started on Pentasa and could eat whatever I want but I’m considering going back on it since I’m flaring due to stress.
I highly highly recommend it!! I have always felt like eating yogurt regularly really benefitted my gut. here is a good explanation of the why and a a basic how. This is the yogurt maker I’ve used for years and it makes the process super simple. I just buy a half gallon of whole milk, heat it on the stove like the first link instructs, and once it cools to the appropriate temperature I’d mix in one individual sized container of commercial plain Greek yogurt. Then you just let it sit! I only just now got fancy and ordered special yogurt starter to try for the first time. But if I were you I’d probably go the instant pot route if you think you’d use it’s other functions

I’m so sorry about your husband! Nonetheless, periodic colonoscopies will most likely prevent you from any advanced stage colon cancer, if at all. Keep taking care of yourself.

I’ve been using this for about 18 months. I love it and have recommended it to several people who love it. My nighttime pills are over 15. No issues. Pill System
This thing has been absolutely amazing. Has everything you need even stainless steel lines. Just don't turn the pressure up past 3 unless you want a new butthole.
I did a road trip this spring, but only because I was feeling very good - one bowel movement a day and usually formed. Split a 22 hour drive into 3 days; 5hrs, 12hrs, and 5hrs. Don't think I'd attempt that in a flare though...
I brought a 5 gallon bucket, double bagged, with this lid attached and toilet paper/wet wipes ready to go. Only had to use it once and it tucks nicely in the corner of the passenger side doors for some privacy. Now I keep it in my car all the time, just in case!
This, but also get one of these, a 5 gallon bucket, heavy duty trashbags, and an extra pair of underwear to keep in the car.
Unless your car is a lifted truck, you can open the passenger doors, tuck the bucket in the corner and make a little semi-private emergency toilet.
I hadn't yet heard about the IBD Treatment Pyramid. I found this online: https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Crohn-%E2%80%99-s-and-Colitis-at-the-Crossroads-%3A-Part-2-%3A-Puishing/4b0ef90095ff4bdb9392f067245155d038d89bba This is really helpful!! Thanks.
When I was underweight I drank boost and it was lactose free too, and it helped me keep the weight on too. I also tried really hard to graze all day too. But that is weird that the dr doesn't think a rapid 30 pound loss isn't alarming.
I had the same symptom on my first flare. My doc recommended Lidocaine suppositories for the symptoms. It all disappeared with Budesonid foam.
Don't use cold water. This will just irritate the area even more. There a over the seat baths you can buy for cheap on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Foldable-Discreet-Postpartum-Hemorrhoids-Episiotomy/dp/B08CDNFMLC
I've tried a lot of different things, but the one that has helped me the most is actually loading everything into a pillbox that has morning and evening for each day. That way I know if I've actually taken it, which for me is part of the challenge.
I think also it's really important to remember that ultimately you aren't responsible for managing the other person's healthcare. It's great that you are trying to help, but you aren't responsible for making sure that you also have time in your day to get them to take their meds.
Edit to add: I use this one
Agree 100%, I'm terrible at keeping good habits but a pillbox like this one works for me. Put it somewhere they will see it everyday and leave it there (mine is by my keys/wallet).
hello there
-what is your entyvio schedule? Every 8 weeks? It can be shorten (every 7 weeks, every 6 weeks, every 5 weeks, down to every 4 week but not less), so maybe you "just" need to shorten the time you take it (I'm on 4 weeks by my side)
-good new is entyvio can now be taken at home without the need of a doctor, you just make your own thousand dollars / euro injection (so it can help while traveling)
-stress can have impact on UC I think, all peoples here are anxious as hell, all peoples I see at the hospital with UC are anxious as hell, and my doctor tell me "yeah you guys are all anxious af)
So seek for therapy whatever it's linked or not to UC at least you will not have to fight on two side.
I insist, therapy / mental health help should be a mandatory when you have UC, whatever anxiety worst UC or UC make us anxious or booth idk, we seem to be lot anxious for a lot of us and UC fuck our brain up with time : you can't endure all this heavy pain for month and feel good, not after 10 or 20 years of UC, so don't think you are "stronger" than your condition, no need for those bullshit here we need to be at peace and feel safe and secure
Good luck for you OP, hope it's going well
PS : for now a little help can be breathe exercises (like 2 or 3 tiles a day). It's won't erase your anxiety but it really help to stay a bit in control and to lower anxiety
You can find some apps on play store / app store for this, find one that fit you, just don't use one with music lol

I would hugely recommend this book: ‘The Inflamed Mind’ by Edward Bullmoor. His research is starting to show that inflammation anywhere in the body might trigger a chemical response that affects serotonin uptake in the brain. Previously, patients with issues such as IBD or arthritis would get depression and Drs would be like “well of course you’re sad, your life has changed due to pain etc”. Whereas now they think the actual inflammatory response causes a chain reaction on the body that results in depression. This is pretty new stuff (and I’m not a medic or scientist, so I may have misunderstood it) but the premise is very interesting and possibly quite validating to those of us who struggle with mental health in addition to our UC!

It’s using electric pulses to distract the nerves. It can be helpful, most often used for lower back, muscle pain or childbirth. As I say I got it for period pain. There are huge numbers of options but I wouldn’t bother spending much as the cheap ones do the exact same thing. link to my fave one
I take paracetamol and tramadol (it’s an opiate but I have endometriosis so I need it). There is an nsaid that you can use with IBD called celecoxib which may work well for you. As well as meds I use beyou monthly patches, a battery operated infrared heat pad and a tens machine (just the cheap ones don’t bother with the fancy ones they all do the same thing).
I definitely find that my period triggers a couple of days of urgency even when I’m not flaring so I tend to try not to do too much over that time.
Are you based in the UK ? I'm sure you can get these internationally too but if you are in the UK, can buy some ensure nutritional drinks . This will at least help with calorie intake and ensuring he isn't losing more weight by not eating. I used then for four or five days and then stopped once I was able to eat normally again. See link below to Amazon to see the brand.... I don't have a financial stake in it ! :D
Secondly I'm sorry, it is really hard to watch the ones we love, especially our other halves suffer. But please just do what you can do and don't put unnecessary strain on yourself or so much pressure that you become ill / burnt out. Make sure you are strong for him and for yourself by eating well, working out and sleeping. Just do what you can do and do your best, cause that's all you can do x. Last thing he would want is for you to get ill as well.
There could be valid reasons for the metronidazole. White cells could go up in a flare and in inflammation but are not always elevated. In any case it is academic if he can't tolerate it anyway.
If he is honestly feeling no better and especially if he's getting worse it may be time to return to hospital or at the very least to contact the team looking after him, to let them know there has been no improvement .
I don't know where you do your reading but I found this website quite helpful. Information from trusted, reliable sources is the best way to combat the fear we feel when facing the unknown.
Take care OP.
I do not. That is what happens when I do. I am currently not drinking and trying to follow Elaine Gottschall's advice in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) It is not easy!

You could get something along this line of “portable toilet”.
Really smart. I did see this on Amazon last week, which is essentially a product version of what you made… might help with the angle of use… a few different models/ designs out there. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KR6GGCX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VRF7QYH85FDCDK6Y2WAV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you're going to be on the road, get one of these as a backup. They're also sold at walmart. Tucks nicely into the front passenger door for "privacy". Obviously this isn't ideal, but I like to have peace of mind, haha!
Nice, a bit of planning goes a long way. I live in the mountains, 3 hours away from my GE doc, and ended up buying a 5 gallon bucket seat just in case, haha!
The sharpness you feel sounds like me with hemorrhoids. You could try Preparation-H or the generic versions of it (I've used Walgreens' version, less expensive but exact same medicine), they make both suppositories and creams that should come with a nozzle to squeeze the cream/ointment up there a couple inches in. You can also ask your GI doc for prescription-strength stuff. They should not only help shrink the hemorrhoids, but also soothe the pain.
The unfortunate thing, though, is that they never go away. They will flare up occasionally, needing treatment to keep them down from time-to-time. One thing to help that I didn't really know about until I got my first hemorrhoid flare was to not hold your breath (strain) while pushing/pooping, as it causes increased blood pressure down there which can cause your blood vessels/veins to expand and become hemorrhoids.
You can also try adding some fiber to your diet if you can tolerate it. Many people with UC can tolerate psyllium-husk fiber, which goes by the name-brand Metamucil. I use a generic version I found on Amazon (here).
They get way pricier when electric is involved. This is about middle pricing I would say. KOHLER K-BN330S-N0 Novita Electric Bidet Toliet Seat, Round Heated and Warm Water Bidet with Dryer, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BF24VF6/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_TZBZA7ZVMVHPHG7A618D?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It’s interesting that heat works so well. I should pick some up. I sweat when I’m in a hot bath it’s like magical pain relief.
I like rice packs but hot water bottles last for 3-6 hours.
Sure there away a heat pads too!
But I love the on the go stick to your body idea for work!
Hmmm maybe I should bring a hot bottle to work 🤔
this is a much cheaper alternative to what u/Theothercan linked.
it connects to the water supply of the toilet using a tee valve, very easy to use, just aim and spray! this is found all over the middle east, Africa and Asia, very worth!
Sure, here ya go.

Crohn's and Colitis for Dummies was helpful, though it could use some updating.
You Don't Look Sick: Quick and Dirty Tips for Surviving Ulcerative Colitis is stuff we all already know, but it's comforting to read to feel not so alone with it all, and in a lighthearted manner.
It's not UC specific, but I really enjoyed reading Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ. Helped me learn more in general about the GI system.
This book helped me. It is a very restrictive diet, but has always worked for me during flare-ups. Good Luck!
This is not a promotion it's just what I've been taking that seems to help gut and poop wise.

Yeah, it's kind of passive-aggressive, but if you talked about how the comments make you feel and then deliver it, you give them a chance to be helpful. If they choose ignorance then I wouldn't feel bad about telling them off in the future.
I recommend medisafe to check for interactions. I was pretty much dying for over a year due to a medication interaction that 5 different doctors missed (omeprazole + zoloft blocks vitamin B absorption). Tramadol is an opioid, which unfortunately get overprescribed for IBD since NSAIDs are so bad for us. I recommend using the absolute minimum dosage and frequency (I was on codeine for a year and I really only used it to sleep so I wouldn't wake up with cramps).
Good luck friend, I hope your symptoms improve soon.
This, I have the same issues. As soon as my gas starts to smell horrific, almost acidic, I know I'm in trouble, either cdiff or a flare. I also get constant heat flashes (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DFX4TRS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details I recommend this blanket, it's helped me a lot at nights.)
Another few things that were more long-term: I never got sick much, even with colds. I now chalk that up to an overly-strong immune system. The other being that I've suffered from chronic fatigue since I was probably 8 or 9. Even my parents noticed how tired I was all the time, but they figured it was a growth/puberty thing. By the time I became an adult, they thought it was just "habit" that I felt I needed 10+ hours of sleep at night to function. I've also been incredibly picky my whole life, so I now think my brain knew what foods it "shouldn't" have (i.e., foods that would be too hard on it to digest). This is something I'm pretty traumatized about now since my parents used to tell me I was going to get colon cancer from not eating right.
... They don't joke about that anymore.
This is the kind I get. Make sure it's inner fillet.

If you can't bidet then get some camping toilet paper (aka compressed cotton wipes). Soak them in your aloe vera product of choice and water. I have a few soaking in a tub next to the toilet, replace them when you use em. Never single layer this stuff always use multiple layers or you'll get poop on your hands. Pat dry with normal toilet paper at the end.
This helped me always remember if I took them or not. If the pills were gone, then I took them. If not, then I forgot! But you still have to remember to fill it every day or double up doses and fill it up with two days worth every drei days etc
I went on birth control to help regulate my periods more and I use these wipes occasionally to clean my eyelids so I don’t get styes. I also threw out a lot of my old makeup too to make sure that wasn’t causing eye problems. For the stye I would recommend brewing a cup of black tea and using the teabag on your eyelid as a warm compress + getting a microwave hot compress eyepatch to use. Best of luck! <3
Hello! Buy clear veggie capsules like these and just put the prednisone pills inside of them - you shouldn’t be able to taste them this way and the capsule will dissolve in your stomach/won’t affect the meds! Best of luck!
I have this same problem. I’ll forget if I took the meds or not 15 minutes later and then start contemplating whether or not to risk taking too much or taking too little for the next 20 minutes lol. The pill organizer thing solved that entirely. If there were two missing, then obviously I took it.
But you have to always be filling it on schedule and not skip a day or you might be confused again
My stomach reacts violently to aspartame, acesulfame potassium, ace k, sucralose, and basically all artificial sweeteners and for some freaking reason workout powders are full of them. I've had good luck with bougie vegan protein powders that has Stevia in it. Like this one.
Honestly, I went camping during a mild flare and for the long sections where there was no bathroom on the road, I had a portable toilet ready with poo powder. Pooed in the bag, tied it up and dumped at the next stop.
You can look at getting a pop-up privacy shelter as well in case the roads are more populated.
I got one of those pop up trunk organizers for my end table in the living room. I dish out my meds into a pill tracker, and keep all the bottles in the storage part of the first box. I track my meds, moods and BMs in the Bearable app.
Yep. I got the bulk supplements size 00 capsules.

Actually just went through a horrible hemorrhoid experience. Generally they will go away. Sitz baths are your friend. You can also ice regularly to get them to calm down. Ask your doctor for a suppository steroid or cream which can also help. Mine became thrombosed which means they had blood clots. Those too will go away on their own but it takes quite awhile for the body to absorb 2-4 weeks. Mine unfortunately became very painful so I had to have the blood clots removed. At any rate they will go away on their own or at least shrink just do regularly sitz baths if you can 3 times a day and after stools. It's a lot if you're in a flare but it really does help. If the flare is under control or you're in remission just do the baths and you should see some improvements. This is the best stuff I've used and have tried quite a few.
That sucks that she is. This might be an inconvenience to do each time but try to clean yourself in the shower instead of using toilet paper. Also, you mentioned that she doesn't want to get a bidet. Perhaps you can suggest to her a bidet shower spray instead. Maybe it's cheaper. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Joyway-Sprayer-Set-Handheld-Kit-Bathroom-Cleaning/dp/B0716PFM1W
It can be hard to feel like you're improving if it feels like you're going every 10minutes. I track Spasms, inflammation response and bowel movements in the Bearable app to help chart progress and make it easier to give my gastroenterologist accurate information about my symptoms.
I found the Bearable app recently. They have a scale to grade the difficulty and tags like "painful" or "urgency", it's really helpful. I feel weird writing descriptions of my poop, so clicking the applicable tags while I'm on the toilet is much easier.

My husband has been diagnosed with UC for over 2 months now. I hate cooking and I get lost in the kitchen if meals aren’t easy to make. I bought the book I linked and it has worked wonders!! My husband is feeling so much better and working on introducing foods to his diet.
Good luck to you!
My main symptoms are pain, bloating, and bloody diarrhea. I found on flights (especially ones with layovers) that the pressurization and depressurization of the cabin aggravated my pain and bloating. For a couple of days after flying I would alternate between constipation and diarrhea.
I eventually asked my Gastro and PCP if I could be prescribed something for flight related anxiety that would help me sleep (antispasmodic meds didn’t do anything for me). I found that being able to sleep for the flight helped a lot.
I’ve heard of some people taking Imodium and gasx before flying but I would ask your Gastro about it first depending on the severity of your disease.
Portable heating pads were also a life saver.
How much iron per day did he recommend? This is what I take per my GI due to blood loss:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005TM2DDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This doesn't bother me at all -- it just makes my poop blackish. My mom, who does not have UC and gets a bit constipated from iron, splits these pills in half and takes half in the morning and half at night and found that solved her problem.
These are my go-to's. They're not as bulky as some brands, and they're surprisingly discreet for the amount of protection:
I think mine is a different brand that was discontinued but this is basically the same one. Reliance Products Fold-to-Go Collapsible Portable Toilet, 9824-21W, Gray/Black, 14.5"x14.5"x14.5" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024OAQ3Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_160AAYQ7W0KVH8H3TARN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I wear jeans all the time. Levi's are great, one size too big ;) Also a belt like this one https://www.amazon.com/Canvas-Military-Style-Buckle-Colors/dp/B07CKWWXBD is really great.
Pretty much any whey protein isolate is the best IMO. Relatively cheap but effective also. It’s just fast digesting and doesn’t contain proteins that are slower digesting that cause some people indigestion.
I use this one often but haven’t had any issue with any whey protein isolates in general

I take liquid iron at night on an empty stomach, as is recommended. Helps keep me strong as I perpetually lose iron from blood in stools. I recommend the Nature's Way Liquid Iron on Amazon. It's got a yummy berry flavor to it, and hasn't caused me any upset yet. Actually, what upsets my body is when I don't take it.
Dang, welcome aboard fam. It’s 5am here in CT so I’m gonna keep this brief since my noodle is only just now beginning to come online, but this isn’t the end of the line for you...or me. I’m a 36/m. Diagnosed at 27. Had 27 years of being a medical muggle. Now you, like me, are in the shit. I consider myself s living science experiment since I use any and EVERY inch offered to me these days.
There’s what works and what doesn’t work. What may work for me or the next person may not work for you, so take what works and leave the rest.
Be gentle with you.
Look into probiotics to help shore up the gut biome. This is how I came into UC. My biome was stripped from antibiotics which opened me to C diff, burning a hole in my colon.

Would be my recommendations. Enteric capsules allow the little critters to get past the stomach acids alive and in tact.
Also, I recently found whey protein ISOLATE. It’s the cleanest form of protein with the greatest amount of amino acids and such. We got a wasting disease. We have to fight.
You’re gonna build resolve. Whether we like it or not, these are our cards. Learn everything you can and up your game. Learn to swim.
I wish I found this sub years ago. You’re lightyears ahead of me in certain respects already.
You’re gonna be alright.
Cut out sugar, alcohol, and NSAIDS (definitely this one) as best you can. Feed the healing, not the disease and up your water and electrolyte (neuromag, potassium citrate, pink salt) game!!
Just ideas, no medical advice. But they are in my arsenal and on regular rotation.
Lastly, look in to black seed oil. I take a tbsp in the morning on an empty stomach to help keep the gi tract clean.
God speed fam 🖖🏽💩
I would see if you can find a good therapist to help. Otherwise you can try a self help anxiety journal/workbook. I've done cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety twice now, and I highly recommend this or a version similar. The workbook I'm currently using is this one from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1623159733/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yes! I have had really good success with this: NOW Sports Nutrition, L-Glutamine Pure Powder, Nitrogen Transporter*, Amino Acid, 1-Pound https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OXEKK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_A1BVFJMJM4JYRAQTXYV8
Not OP but in my experience, cheap iron that you can get from Walmart or someplace similar was absolutely horrible for me. I took ONE and I had horrible stomach cramps and painful poops until it went out of my system. I took these for a while and had no issues with them. It also has other vitamins that help with the absorption of iron and they’re organic, non-GMO, vegan and gluten free (if any of that matters to you).

You should also take a look at some dietary changes long term. My GI's office recommends a combination of the Low FODMAP diet and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

Diet can't control it by itself (believe me I've tried), but it can definitely help reduce symptoms!
Same here, but I have found that taking iron everyday helps me a ton and I no longer am as dead tired as I once was. I still bleed a bit even after my j-pouch surgery a few years ago, so even after that I still require supplements. I also need to take plant-based, more expensive iron as the standard stuff hurts my gut. This is the one I take: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JQ3JTZH/
Thank you :-)

I fired my GI, but when I did have one he'd just roll his eyes whenever I mentioned Chinese herbs, didn't want to know anything about them, wouldn't take any of the info on them I brought with ne. When his assistant would ask for what meds I was on, they wouldn't even write it down because they had no idea what was anyway. Ignorant and dangerous imo. My acupuncturist knew what was as soon as I mentioned, but freaked out that I had taken for a year, haha.
Ymmv means “your mileage may vary”. Basically, it might not work to the exact same extent for everybody.
BMs = bowel movements. Aka poops.
Bismuth subsalycalate is just Pepto Bismol and can be purchased in pretty much any drugstore (Walgreens, cvs, etc) or online at amazon. Here’s an example: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pepto-Bismol-5-Symptom-Stomach-Relief-Chewable-Original-Flavor-30-ct/10317156
Oregano oil can be purchased at pretty much any health foods store (like Whole Foods) or on amazon! I’ve had good luck with this one, but I don’t think the brand matters too much https://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Oregano-Softgels-Capsules/dp/B00J7WW938
If you’re gonna use a protein powder, use whey protein isolate. It’s refined so there are no allergens. I wish I had discovered it years ago. Total game changer.
I’ve finally stabilized this year after ten or so before this and have FINALLY returned to preUC weight this month!
Good luck n’ Godspeed 🖖🏽

One of my favorite ever snacks that I had discovered after my diagnosis was Pirates Booty, its puffed white cheddar corn/rice. They have very little ingredients and irritants. Definitely good for a movie or something. Another snack I eat often is crackers with colby jack cheese. Though that depends on whether you can tolerate dairy or not.

Yes and yes. I also add a bit of this stuff and it never fails.
Someone on this subreddit recommended LiveSpo Colon Liquid Probiotic. I started it about 4 days ago and I’ve felt great taking it. It completely settled my constant urges/diarrhea. I do two vials a day.
This is a great cookbook as well. Although admittedly the recipes are more complex than I would hope. I'm a "under 5 ingredient and less than 30 minutes" type guy, but still some great recipes and source for ideas.

I think people's expectations from probiotics is the probiotic will act fast like a drug. It will not. Probiotics take much more time than a drug.
This is not VSL#3. My understanding is that VSL#3 has 900 billion live bacteria. This one is the same manufacturer but only 450 billion.
