Hey there! We still have a Chrome app, but we have found some extensions that are pretending to be Videostream!! Make sure the the Chrome app is from here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-google-ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en You can also download our desktop application here: http://getvideostream.com/download#
I tried VLC also and it seems like support for chromecast with subtitles has been repeatedly pushed back. I tried Airflow (https://airflow.app/) and it has worked well so far. It does require a one-time $20 payment to watch more than 20 mins at a time, but it's been solid.
Are you talking about streaming your own content that you can reach while away from home, for yourself? Or is this like a business you want to launch? If the former, try Subsonic. If the latter, this might not be the right sub...
It's been working for me well enough. The only problems are that the skip forward and back functionality is poor and if my wireless signal drops out I have to restart the video on my phone if I want to be able to control playback later on. You have to make sure you have this plugin installed as well as es file explorer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.chromecast
I'd rate this functionality for this app a 4/5 but would definitely switch if videostream provided this function since as yet es file explorer is the only app I know of which will allow chromecasting of files stored on an android phone.
u/molew He's right simply go to https://vivaldi.com/download/archive/?platform=win download an older version of vivaldi: 3.1.1929.45 and copy paste the Videostream link from your chrome to Vivaldi browser and it works like a charm...
I emailed the videostream guys for help and they had me download the desktop version which seems to work fine. Desktop version Hopefully that works for everyone else too.
I ran into this issue and it turns out my Videostream version was old!
I solved the issue by:
BOOM! A newer UI and pairing worked instantly
This seems to be a bug with our Chrome app!
Can you try downloading the desktop beta version here: http://getvideostream.com/download/# Let me know if this helps!
Also, can you please let me know what kind of computer you're using, and your screen resolution (if known)? Are you using the regular Chrome or Chrome Beta? Thanks!

I use a great and simple to use program that has no issues with subtitles (can change colors and size), doesn't need to transcode the video, and even have a remote app:
Airflow
Videostream has issues with subtitles. The subtitles get cut off at the bottom of the screen.
Kodi and Plex need to create accounts and use a server...
Videostream is the wrong software to use.
Try running the video through Handbrake. After opening up the video using the "Source" button, choose "High Profile" from the list of presets on the right hand side.
If the video has sound, go to the Audio tab, and select "Auto Passthrough" for codec type, or press the red X to delete the audio track if you don't want to keep it.
You are sending this video to a phone, so the resolution does not need to be that high. Go to the picture tab, and change the picture width to 1280 to get a 1280x720 image, or lower it even further if desired.
Go to the video tab, this is where the settings that affect the video file size are located. Under quality, check "Avg Bitrate" and 2 pass encoding, and type in 380 (this is in kbps) for the bit rate. (This should get you just under 16 megabytes.) Under Optimize video, set x264 tune to Still Image, as this is a slideshow.
These settings should be plenty. Now, all you have to do is choose the destination for the output file, and hit "Start" to encode the video.
Alternatively, you could just upload the video to Youtube as unlisted, and send your family members the link.
Just posted this elsewhere, because I just this same issue on my machine:
>I just figured this issue out for me! Videostream was working just fine until the latest Windows update, and then the next day it wouldn't work, no matter what I did - manual port opening, disabling Firewall temporarily (I got it to work when I permanently disabled the windows firewall service but that was unacceptable), etc.
>My problem? I had installed TunnelBear (a VPN service) to use occasionally, and even though it wasn't running, it was causing problems with Videostream and wreaking havoc with all sorts of other Firewall and security related issues on my computer. The latest update must have changed the way the VPN interacted with the service.
>So I've uninstalled TunnelBear, and now things are working great! All my issues are gone! So if you have VPN software, or something remotely similar, trying disabling the service manually, or simply uninstalling altogether, and see if it works again.
>Hope this helps someone!
