edit: I ****ed up, here is a download link for anyone looking: getvideostream.com
Netflix and Youtube are great starts, then the android app store has a ton of apps if you search "Chromecast". Cast store in the android app store is a good way to keep up to date. As well the side bar over here-------->
has a good section called "Useful Links" that will help you.
Finally, I'll be a jerk and plug our product, Videostream - People here seem to like it! It lets you cast your local/downloaded videos and music from your computer to your Chromecast really easily in full HD. If you have a huge media library and you're a technically-inclined person, you may also want to try our sort-of-competitor, Plex. It's harder to set up, but it's nice if you have a lot of movies and TV shows downloaded already, like dozens you want to watch :)
Welcome to Chromecast ownership!
>My up/down is 40Mpbs/5Mpbs
Note that your ISP speed has nothing to do with using the network locally. Any router (wireless or wired) made within the past 10 years should suffice.
Like someone else said, you can also try Videostream GetVideoStream.com which uses very minimal resources to stream content locally if you're having trouble streaming with Plex.
Hey there! We still have a Chrome app, but we have found some extensions that are pretending to be Videostream!! Make sure the the Chrome app is from here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-google-ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en You can also download our desktop application here: http://getvideostream.com/download#
This seems to be a bug with our Chrome app!
It seems to be fixed by moving to the desktop beta version, which you can download here: http://getvideostream.com/download/#
Would you also be able to let me know if you're using the regular Chrome app or Chrome beta?
I use the chrome extension VideoStream.... it is free, but it worked so good i upgraded to the paid version.
*note - i am in no way associated with this company, and get nothing if you use it or not. so YMMV
Id suggest getting videostream, setting the directory from your pc to point at the nas, open videostream on phone, see list of films on nas... profit
to get videostream click here
edit: why google dont have their own official app to do this is beyond me but this app is great
There can also be lag with screen mirroring as it's only in beta still after multiple years. If you have an older machine, it will most likely have some stuttering/lag. A lot of people user Videostream as an alternative player that supports native streaming.
IMO. It comes down to the fact that twitch is meant to stream incredibly well.
Chromecast screen cast just isn't there yet.
Work arounds at least give you other avenues to pursue your goal. Such as your stream to twitch, chromecast streams from twitch--have you ever noticed the stream delay? Chromecast just doesn't have that A+ buffering, encoding, decoding, etc...... yet.
Try playing the movie in a chrome tab and chromecast that tab. Ive also successfully used Video Stream, downfall was first run it took forever to index the library. My personal favorite is Local Cast, it does kill the phone's battery if left unplugged because it streams off the device, but it doesn't need the screen always on. Ive also started looking into setting up a Plex server to encoded the stream.
Hope this helps. Good luck getting it working.
I mostly just use popcorntime, and the torrent collection feature if i can't find what i'm looking for in the movie/tv show section.
I'm a Chromecast user so i use Videostream to cast some local files to my CC.
And Mobdro for live tv to my CC.
If you have a Windows PC, BubbleUPnP is easier to setup and use than Plex.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp
You will need to enable home sharing in network settings and windows media player.
For chromecast support and transcoding on the fly, you will need the license and the windows server. http://bubblesoftapps.com/bubbleupnpserver/
Another good alternative is the chrome extension Videostream: - http://getvideostream.com/

Shout out to /r/chromecast and the following apps:
Localcast
Web Video Cast
TV Portal
The company is Groupnotes, Inc. We've created a lot of products iver the last year and a half but our newest product is Videostream. I did Mechatronics Eng with a minor in business so I do some code, a lot of product and UI design, and handle half of the business end of the company with one of my co-founders. So far I've also delivered all of the pitches that got us the money we needed to get going, I really love to speak :)
Our whole team (6) is all technical so it's a cool place to work. Lots of highly-skilled people who love code and love to make awesome stuff all day. We're actually on a coding binge right now putting out a big release to the main app and the mobile app before we sleep.
If you're just going to occasionally download a movie here and there (like once a month download one movie and delete it afterward) then just get the Videostream browser extension for Chrome and cast from your PC.
If you are going to have a bunch of video files (many many movies and TV shows on a hard drive) then use a media center application like Plex, Kodi, Emby, etc. They have metadata scrapers and offer an intuitive UI for browsing your library.
I emailed the videostream guys for help and they had me download the desktop version which seems to work fine. Desktop version Hopefully that works for everyone else too.
I ran into this issue and it turns out my Videostream version was old!
I solved the issue by:
BOOM! A newer UI and pairing worked instantly
This seems to be a bug with our Chrome app!
Can you try downloading the desktop beta version here: http://getvideostream.com/download/# Let me know if this helps!
Also, can you please let me know what kind of computer you're using, and your screen resolution (if known)? Are you using the regular Chrome or Chrome Beta? Thanks!

Following this procedure should help. However, I'm assuming you are attempting to cast owned Apple DRM-protected music on a Windows PC to an Audio Chromecast.
Note afterwards you may wish considering using Videostream running on Chrome as a media player. It's free, and besides Chrome, it runs on iOS, Android and several Linux distros. Videostream is able to work with over 400 different video and audio file types.
As others have mentioned, Plex is also a good solution. I've tried Hobolink, which is available as a GitHub downloadable. It works, but it didn't fit my needs.
Good luck and happy streaming!
If it's movies/TV, run a Plex server on your Mac.
Also, the Mi Box runs Android TV. Casting is an option. This is a better option for casting photos or streaming websites. If you want to cast the occasional video file, then give Videostream a try.
If i absolutely need subtitles and they don't work or are out of sync i just use torrent collection and search for the movie/episode and use a diffrent torrent/Source.
It will add subtitles automatic this way if they are available in your language and you can choose your chromecast as external player.
Or use a program like videostream and add subtitles yourself.
Videostream for Google Chromecast.
It's pretty cool. Just open the extension page and load up whatever video file you want. Supports subtitles as well.
Edit: Here's the website.
Another option if you don't want to setup media servers (as of mentioned in the other posts)
