the only thing that comes to mind is Zoviet*France. A lot of their stuff sounds like you are wandering though some forest hundreds of years ago, distant tribal drumming with the occassional flute/horn sound, low level chattering voices/chanting, the sound of metal hammering on metal being carried on the wind. Stuff like that. Not particularly 'fantasy' though.

How do people feel about non-musical posts like this on here? Is this something people are fine with? I'm not a fan of this myself but I always like hearing input from the people who come here. This one in particular is odd because it's not new.
This definitely deserves the embedded treatment. It's good.
This is nice, i like this atmosphere as well, i had in mind more something indoors, i put this fridge sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu7DkbwWQJ8 together with just the coffee shop sound from here http://asoftmurmur.com/ ...thats the direction im thinking.
They had been bought by another company since and their software is free now. This link might be more up to date.

You should also look for free VST's, they are plugins you use inside the DAW, they are effects, synthesizers, loads of stuff. I forgot it but the PaulXStretch plugin is really cool for ambient, it takes anything and slows it down to extrem extents, and that creates some amazing textures :)
Disclaimer: I do make ambient and drone music, but a good bulk of my work is also harsh noise, glitch, etc.
Name: Nicholas Herndon
Name of Project: Silent Cicada
Pertinent Links:
Influences: Samsa, angelSWING, Aphex Twin, Gnaw Their Tongues, Bull of Heaven, Enigma, Enya, Moëvöt
Terms: To me, ambient means "atmospheric music, perhaps for background listening" with little emphasis on trying to be noticed. It's quite a wide and varied genre, not always electronic but often is. I've always taken "drone" to mean that you have very slow paced music with little emphasis placed on progression.
Why do you make ambient music: I enjoy the process, and it's always interesting to find new soundscapes, and incorporate interesting samples that other music genres might not take so kindly to. It's very easy to do by yourself, as well.
Relationship with labels: Underground labels and internet labels are more likely to take on ambient producers since it's such a niche genre. My own netlabel is one of these (or at least will be, once it has more releases).
Emotion, and elements: Ambient music can be very calming. It can relax the mind and soothe. It can also be menacing, noisy, destructive, and claustrophobic - such is the case of black ambient. If you manage to find the right release, you can definitely be impacted emotionally.
Other: Keep in mind the wide variety of ambient music. Ambient, electronic ambient, ambient IDM, ambient glitch, space ambient, dark ambient, ritual ambient, tribal ambient, black ambient, field recordings, drone, drone metal... there's a lot of variation in the field of ambient music, and there's a wealth of content out there.
You could try these books, but I'm not sure if there's any reference to nostalgia specifically.
And you most definitely want to check out William Basinki's work, in particular 'The Disitegration Loops".

I'm not 100% sure if it includes a paulstrech plugin, but you could try WavePad. I have edited some songs on my android phone this way.
