Should be OK temporarily but make the investment and get a good sized one if you are keeping it. They need tons of space to truly be happy and not distressed.
Something like this at minimum: chincilla cage
Here are better wheels for your chin:
$120 from Quality Cage Crafters
We have one of each. The more expensive one is definitely quieter. Worth the extra $20
Hey the cage that your chin is in is WAY to small he needs at least three levels and a lot more floor space than he has, the cages that pet stores sell aren’t usually big enough for the animals they sell as quite often they just care about money and not the actual animals. Some good cages are this one and this one, caring for a chinchilla properly costs a lot so if your not able to pay for everything that he needs you might want to think about finding someone that can. Also the food/treats that you are giving him really isn’t good for him there’s some great websites and YouTube channels that have loads of information about what your chinchilla needs :)
My chinnies have a dust bowl that they sell on amazon like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AS5M8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dPqJyb1Y0FHSN. It hooks on to the side of the cage and can be removed. Looks kinda like a big plastic birdhouse lol but they love it. It seems to trap in most of the dust although some shoots out on occasion.
this is a pretty commonly recommended wheel.
They are NOT cheap, but they are pretty sturdy. I have one of these and one of another brand that isnt available any more.
They are expensive but worth it.
You could also consider a flying saucer type running this as well
I found it on Amazon! It's just a wooden hay feeder
andwe Hay Feeder Cylindrical Stand Feeding Manager with Cover for Guinea Pig Rabbit Chinchilla Bunny https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YBDVV6H/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_J1DDP2TZJ6A7XBH1Z383
Voltron has a bee-themed hideout in his cage and every day he goes in it to bounce around. Basically all you see is a beehive jiggling violently for a few minutes before he moves on to a different activity.
I'm not going to get into it all right now but one very important rule is to never assume that just because a bag at petco or wherever you're buying from says that it is for chinchillas means that you should be giving it to your chinchilla. You commenting on this sub asking questions already shows that you are aware of this but always check and even double check with what you're giving them( especially since they'll put just about anything in their mouths )
Etsy is great for cage accessories, treats, toys... Just about anything. I'd also recommend AZ chins for all that including bulk buys. These are the links to the hay and pellets I am currently feeding my chin, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007SYZCOA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_GP2ZW0VEJY6F96A329NN
So I see you wrote this almost half an hour ago, so you’ve probably gotten her cooled down by now. But next time you can legit put her in a large bowl and set her in the fridge (door open). I have 2 of these cooling tiles
house i use and love my chins love it. it’s dark inside and metal so it’s cool. measure your cage first because it is rather large but i will always recommend it.
We have this one. It's really roomy and our chin hasn't escaped from it. If yours are jumpers, you could binder clip some fleece over the top of the pen to keep them from leaping out.
I purchased the pin in the below link. The bars are a bit wider than I wanted but I’m in the pin with them the whole time. I keep wire cutters close by just in case. If this isn’t what you are looking for check the 2nd link for a different style.
Looks like you can find it on Amazon
Not sure if your chinchilla would chew on the towel or not. We use anti plll fleece for our chins' cage. Awesome thing is when I change out his bed (I have a couple fleece mats on hand) the dirty ones get rised first to get the hay off and pee areas out. And then pop it in the washing machine, with non scented soap. With extra rise cycle and air drying. The mats are ready to go again.
Ilinked some anti pill fleece on Amazon.
Hope this helps.
this is correct. i did have my chinchillas in these cages: https://www.amazon.com/Yaheetech-Indoor-Ferret-Rabbit-Animal/dp/B071VQYTLZ/ for about 1-1.5 years, as they are affordable and have a good amount of height. i installed a second floor into it made of wood to try and maximize their floor space. even so, both myself and my chinchillas are extremely happy with making the change to critter nation. they are well worth it, even with the fairly high price.
If the enclosure is the kind with bars, look closely at how much space is between each bar. Chinchillas can squeeze through even small spaces. The one in the photo with the link provided looks like it has quite large spaces.
We have a similar setup for when we let our boys out in the evening and have gone through three different pens before we found one that was high enough for them to be discouraged from jumping, but narrow enough not to squeeze through.
I'm based in UK, but the one we use is similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Marshall-FC-224-Small-Animal-Play/dp/B0002ARQT6/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=small+animal+playpen&qid=1625217645&sprefix=small+anima&sr=8-15
it is a plastic "dust bath house". We have the same one and let them bathe in it while we're watching a few times a week. It is 100% plastic. It is this but blue https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Chinchilla-House-Assorted-Colors/dp/B0002AS5M8
This is the one I use for all of my chinchillas. It's made of plastic but I've honestly never had a problem with them chewing it. But it's secured very well to the cage and I've never had issues with leaks!
Get her lots and lots to chew on (safe things of course). Lava rocks, compact hay sticks or cubes, etc. That is something I was actually able to find many of on Amazon. I bought this set recently: KATUMO Rabbit Chew Toys, DIY Hamster Chew Toys Bunny Teeth Care Molar Toys Ideal for Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Chinchilla, Hamster, Squirrel, Gerbils Etc Small Rodent Pets' Teeth Grinding https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091YV5332/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_EB8EWGTX47VWMM7M50HE?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Pet store water bottle/glass,
chew toys, (apple wood is really good)
hay rack,
16” wheel
cooling tiles
Multiple wooden ledges
Metal or ceramic food dish
A dust bath house/ dust (don’t get kaytee)
Chew toys
No plastic
no fruit
this cage is easier to hang things in get two story and make sure no plastic in it is visable
if they are also on oxbow critical care or you could buy some dip the tip of the syringe in it and they will bite on it and shoot it on in there. (we do this for mine since she likes the taste of the oxbow) this is the oxbow care make sure you get the anise flavor
Amazon. Here's the link. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006FZ3DPS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Some of the treats and toys mine'll play with on the rope they wouldn't touch if I just handed it over to them. They seem to really enjoy the challenge.
In the US you can get it at drugstores as well, so check there. It’s usually with moisturizers and skin ointments. Amazon UK also has it.
I found a great one off Amazon surprisingly.
kathson Guinea Pig Litter Pan... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WJYSSZJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This one works great and I’ve been very happy with the purchase. Hopefully this helps!
buy the collapsable puppy panel fencing on amazon -
here this is just an example- there are many options just make sure of with width of the space between bars- it's very hard to let them loose in a room without them getting into trouble
you could have someone gently else use a broom handle to slowly push him towards one end so you can grab him when he comes out
I see.
If he becomes your chin, you'll probably want to give him a proper cage.
For temporary structures, as I said, hardware cloth is a good solution. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/MTB-Galvanized-Hardware-Length-Available/dp/B01N2HKX1E (you should be able to buy it by the foot). You can easily attach it to your existing kennel using metal zip ties. If you get thick enough gauge, it will be stiff enough, even attached only on the top, and can hang down as a "skirt" and block escape through the bottom. (assuming I'm understanding how the kennel is built correctly)
An additional option is basically building a whole new cage using a wooden frame and hardware cloth sides. Keep one whole side hinged, as a door.
That's not good as a long-term cage (the chin will eventually chew its way out, and it's also a pain to attach ledges or a wheel onto the fairly flimsy wires), but it'll do until whoever ends up owning the chin can obtain a permanent good sized all-metal cage.
I store extra shelves under there as well as the dust bath and these boxes for odds and ends: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JB4UPLA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Unfortunately they're no longer available. Be sure to measure the space so you don't get containers that are too big.
I had chinchillas well before the internet and a lot of pet products were a thing, and my most valuable purchase was a book on their care. The one I had is no doubt long out of print but this looks to be similar. written by a vet and with a lot of information about the species.
I’m as appalled as you are that they’re selling food with dried fruit and nuts as chin food, in my experience they can have a few raisins as a treat but they have to be served well separate from the regular food, otherwise the chins will dig through and discard all their pellets in the search for sweets.
I guess others have issues with glass? But I got these (it was a three pack, so I always have filled spares ready to swap) and they work just fine for me.
Yes. Chinchillas need wheels. This is the wheel I have in all three of my chinchilla cages.
That's how I am. Not full blown hives but itchy where my chinchilla came into contact and lots of sneezing. But I just ignore it honestly and wash my hands and arms after a play session. Never really thought myself as allergic just the dust irritated skin and it's dust so of course you'll sneez ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The breeder I got my chins from recommends using Desenex and sprinkling some every time the chins take their dust bath.
Been following that since day 1 and my chinnies have never had ringworm.
Reading the bad reviews on Amazon for this item https://www.amazon.com/RentACoop-No-Drip-Drinking-Chinchilla-BPA-Free/dp/B087F1C91T/ I think a chinchilla will destroy this within minutes by chewing on it - any exposed plastic, they will destroy. The reviews show that it is easily fouled by food and is very difficult to remove for cleaning without spilling water everywhere. Chinchillas like to sit on anything protruding from the edge of their cage, they will probably find a way to poop into the water dish. I think this is ideal for ferrets, not so much for chinchillas.
I recommend a bottle with two balls in it - but any bottle seems to leak after a few years due to corrosion. My chinchillas refused to use the type that has a metal 'stick'. They prefer to use their long tongue to push the ball out of the way.
i use puppy panels seen here you can move it as needed- i actually keep my chin's cage against a wall, open, and i have this set up full time
Just check the measurements to make sure the space between bars is not large enough for the chin to fit though; different brands vary in width
I unfortunately had bad luck with this one. It was way too stiff for my chinchilla to turn, it was even hard for me to turn by hand. I tried to tweak it and lubricated the bearing but nothing worked. We ended up getting a silver surfer wheel and it has been great. It is actually 14” so not 100% ideal but she doesn’t look awkward or uncomfortable running on it. I’ve also heard good things about the chin spin.
Regarding the ledges, I would recommend some research on YouTube about how to make your own ledges. There is a lot of support out there for chinchillas specifically. The cheapest option is to make your own with hanger bolts and Wing nuts to secure them to the cage
As far as treats I would recommend ChinVilla on etsy. Both of my chins absolutely love the treat variation that they give and it's perfectly safe. This is also a great shop for chew toys and accessories as well. You can also make your own toys using seagrass twine or wire and little Willow balls, stars, and apple sticks, Timothy hay treats.
If you know how to sew, you can make your own hay feeder out of fleece and there are some tutorials available online for that as well.
There are two ways that you can go about flooring for your cage. I have tried both fleece and Aspen pine bedding and Aspen pine is way better. You don't have to clean as often and it will smell better as well. You can purchase a large bag on Amazon for pretty cheap.
As far as food you want to go with oxbow red bag of pellets and for hay I recommend this. Quality hay, my chins love it!
Feel free to ask as many questions as possible on here. There are a lot of well-educated people with lots of experience!
i have had good luck with these, they are a set of balls made from different grasses- so far no issues, and i hear them rolling around all night long
I highly suggest getting something like this
I just unzip the opening, & “connect it” to the open door of my chins cage. This way I can leave him be, but he can choose to come out into the play pen and run around - or he can choose to go back into his enclosure. Just make sure he can’t escape through the connection (cover up any open parts with towels or something sturdy)
This did wonders for me. I love to take my chin into my little bathroom to monitor him & let him play. But when I’m busy - this has been the best alternative to let him run around, play with toys, do his fist bath, have chew new toys, etc. and I don’t have to be too attentive.
Watch him the first few times to make sure he won’t bite through the mesh or the sides. But I would deff try it!
I bought mine off of Amazon! It’s a bit pricey, but it’s worth every penny! My girls absolutely love it and use it daily, and it’s very high quality, I absolutely recommend it!

I ordered the PandamoniumPets 16in Extra soundless spinner I have heard really good thangs about it but I haven't received it yet. a lot of chin owners recommend the chin spin which is a 15in wheel maed suspically for chinchillas

If it has a screw on spout, there should be a rubber washer inside the spout. Make sure it's there and pressed down all the way so you can screw the spout on evenly. When you fill up the water bottle, make sure it's full to the top.
I've used the old style Lixit Glass Water Bottle for over 20 years for a variety of small pets and have found them to be the best. There's always a small amount of drippage, but not enough to soak bedding or cause problems.
Sounds pretty normal, my one chin climbs all over me but the other won’t. The one that won’t will sit on my foot / hop all around on me when he’s out. If your bathroom has tile floor I would recommend that just because it will be a bit cooler for them, when I let my chins out it’s either in our bathroom or in this play pen ESK Collection 48" Pet Puppy Dog... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154M1VWE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use these scatter guards which are the less expensive route to the pans and I put Aspen shavings directly on the critter nation pans.
The cage is this one! It has small doors so it's very convenient :)
Sure! I use Peter's woven (grass/hay/plant material) baskets: https://www.chewy.com/peters-woven-grass-small-animal-bed/dp/128785 When they go on sale (around 6 USD each) , buy them in bulk. Every day, I toss the old Carefresh and add new. I use about one measuring cup full. You don't have to fill the basket up. Your floof will spread it out however she likes. I place the basket in the back of the lower level (Critter Nation cage) away from food and water...because gross. I do this as a part of the daily cleaning routine.
Also, I have an old basket (Chins enjoy chewing grass!) I put out during playtime (in a corner) in case my little one chooses to use it. This litter basket only needs changing if wet.
Hope this helps!
despite the advice i am giving, it is still important to take to the vet asap, as this sounds quite bad. chinchilla seizures from poor diet typically happen once and resolve within 1-2 min.
i’m going to say if everything in her environment has remained the same (heat and food being the main considerations) that these seizures are because she has an infection.
that said, you think this is nutritional. in which case there is two main reasons: thiamine deficiency (not eating enough hay) and calcium-phosphorous imbalance (typically from eating a blended food). for the former, offer lots of fresh hay. if she is not interested in the pack you have, get another. i recommend this brand: https://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Meadows-Small-Quality-Timothy/dp/B095CHJ8W5 for calcium-phosphorous deficiency, make sure you are feeding an alfalfa-based pellet, such as oxbow, mazuri, or selective brand.
i would say it is unlikely to be blood sugar related, unless you have been regularly giving her sugary treats over these years, in which case she could have developed diabetes. this is especially true with chinchillas who don’t have proper access to the exercise they need. this is a chronic illness and would require vet management for life.
I got my bowls from amazon that fasten onto the side of the cage. You can get them in a one or two pack. Here is the link. I put a ledge a little bit lower next to it and both my chins love it
Not really sure what your budget is, but the Arlo stuff from Amazon is very high quality, wi-fi, and would be a good option.
https://www.amazon.com/Arlo-Essential-Spotlight-Wire-Free-Activated/dp/B0875FRJPT
Again if budget puts this guy out of range there are other options.
If there's spillage there's something wrong with the bottle. We use this one and it's very good, three years and counting: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F262S24/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
https://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Meadows-Small-Quality-Timothy/dp/B095CHJ8W5 this is my favorite that i have tried. they also sell orchard grass hay. both are generally tremendous quality. lots of long, odorous, thick pieces.
We have a large metal playpen that we put out over a washable whelping pad in the evenings. It's set up around the door to our chin's cage so he can come and go as he pleases during the evening while we watch TV. He has several hiding/climbing structures and it works really well.
This one's not on Amazon anymore but you might be able to find it elsewhere or a similar one. It's large enough for two of us to sit inside with our chin, and comes up to my hip so he can't jump out. Bar spacing needs to be 1 inch or less:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013TT2SS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We use a washable whelping pad because the little stinker does like to pee on the floor and we don't need our carpet ruined.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08579GSJJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
From what I understand is that chinchillas pee in places that smell like their urine. They'll usually dedicate a corner for this. Removing the smell and moving the thing they are peeing on worked for me in the past. I deodorize my boys cage every so often now to prevent him from peeing outside of his usual pee spot. (He used to pee on the carpet during playtime >.< )
This product works great for removing odors >
most pet stores sell wooden huts that are simple glued panels. Everyone on this forum will come over to my house and string me up for admitting this, but I've got one cage where they have a plastic "pigloo" that they constantly flip upside down but have never chewed. They came with it, and were not happy when I took it away, so I gave it back.
Thank you so much guys!
The maximun temperature we got over here is 23Cº on summer, but I also believed this was a bad spot because of the temperature, the cage is all wooden and has got a metal grid on the bottom.
As soon as I read this we moved everything inside, and are looking to buy a different cage, what do you guys think of this one?
We also changed the bowl for a bottle, and are looking at this toys, would it be big enough, or is it too small?
I know, that's so terrible. :( These sweet creatures honestly do so much good for my mental health. Maybe some long gloves would help as well? I used to have some long ones that cinched around my elbow that were originally made for cleaning aquariums that I used back when my ocd was especially bad. That cinch around the elbow made me feel like no germs could get in/there was no contamination. I had something like this one!
I got them on Amazon. I’m not sure if they are kiln dried. Do they need to be? I’ve had this for years and love it! It’s sturdy and tough, and you can leave the top off for extra height. It is super light weight and easily folds into a sleek bag for storage. Also, it’s super easy to clean. Pee wipes right off and I just get rid of the poops by tilting it and using a dust buster.

Rose hips are fine, just know that some chinchillas don't like the whole ones because there are fibers inside that can be irritating. Ours likes them but not all do.
You can get a pound of organic, crushed, dried rosehips for around $15 which will last a long time and don't have the annoying fibers.
Chins will pee out the excess vitamin C so don't be alarmed if the pee turns a bit reddish. And they still need to be given in moderation, like any other treat.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AYEHL6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Awesome set up, I'd just recommend getting something to put hay in maybe so they don't sit on it poop/pee in it? I have this feeder and love it. It sits outside of the cage and they pull it through the bars when they'd like some.
I use a plant pot lol, one of those that they are like big deep bowls. They have another that is a hard plastic box from ikea and another that is a large hard plastic bowl. They don't chew on them but they do pee there sometimes, when they're misbehaving 😑
I trained them to pee in their boxes of wood shavings. To mark their bowls, I cleaned one of their pee spots with a bunch of shavings, filled the bottom of the container with cat sand, added the shavings with urine, covered with more shavings and placed it in the spots they used to pee. After a while they just did there, excepting when they want to be cheeky. They see me changing the sand of the bath and they jump in, look at me, lift the tail and PEE.
For used cages, check Facebook marketplace or second hand pages, they will be cheaper. Ledges can be screwed in, I think Pandamonium pets sells them with the pieces you'll need to attach them. You can also buy them tunnels if you're not sure about wood.

Best luck in your adventure!
I would recommend getting a couple hiding places like this or this. They are probably scared with all of the changes and hideouts are great for making them feel safe.
Also, while the top of the cage is convenient for storing things eventually they will notice and start cheating on the package! Putting a cookie sheet on the cage and then storing treats, toys, etc on the cookie sheet will prevent that.
I use this for my chins! It’s pretty inexpensive compared to other options. When I bought it, it was on sale for half off. It’s perfect because the steps are like ledges and the ledges are pretty wide, so there are minimal accidents. It’s also safer since a lot of cat trees can get pretty tall. All of my chins love it!
My chinchilla loves chewing on plastic and zip ties so I actually got fabric wire covers. Worked better than the hard plastic covers I had before because she just ignores cloth/fabric stuff.
I can't find the exact type since I've had them for years but something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DDIMMLA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7GK50P8VRETRVHWERAHY
I recently just added more storage and a second monitor to my set up, and found these work really well. Just made sure to hang them out of reach of the chins. Work on the back of my monitor, on the edge of my wooden desk, and on my walls. Have even moved some of them around and as long as you follow directions for removal, they haven't damaged any surfaces. Used zip ties to force some really kinky cords to relax into tight loops. I use for cords that stay plugged in, and for cords I unplug a lot.
This is what we use and it works great. Electriduct 3/4" Split Wire Loom Tubing Polyethylene Corrugated Flexible Conduit (0.75 Inch ID) - Beige - 10 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T56QDJM/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_CB2GWKQSTBSZDP1BG09F
I've been using variations of this cage for my chins since I found them on amazon. The prices have fluctuated over the years (I last bought one about 3-4 years ago and was around £120 then - you might find something similar for less elsewhere). If you do choose a tall cage make sure to have plenty of ledges and hammocks to break potential falls.
I recommend the SIMSEN dehumidifier, it works great in my small room. Of course I bought it on Amazon.
I bought a Marshall playpen for my boys, works great and I know they aren’t chewing the house to pieces.

I ordered off Amazon they have raised the price significantly over the past few months. I bought it almost a year ago for $65 so maybe you would be able to find it cheaper on a different website. But I’m sure the price would drop again in a couple months. If you do get it I know your chinnies will love it. Mine cuddle in it every morning and run to it whenever they get startled.

I got my chin a 2 foot tall one that he can’t jump over, off Amazon. The bars are closer together and there is a door that you can get through. You can get taller ones too. I stick mine in my large bathroom away from the walls, on tile floor. This is the one I use:
I have the ferret nation with the critter nation add on in the middle but regretted it since the bars are so flimsy and break easily
This is the one I use I was able to pick it up at local pet store it works perfect for Critical Care
I keep my chinchilla in the same room as my two aquariums and houseplants. My chinchilla was never affected by the humidity, but my room walls would grow mold on them if a piece of furniture was too close/right up against them. I use this dehumidifier from Amazon. It's small but it works really well, even has an LED to illuminate the moisture collection tank. It's only in the 40$ range too!
Amazon 😊 she loves it.

this is the best wheel for a chinchilla, period. i would recommend any other wheel, it’s absolutely silent and they can FLY on that thing. the plastic is terrible and toxic to them 100%.

Of course! They do best with 14 inches and above, so they don’t curve their backs. I have a saucer, but I don’t love it as it takes up a lot of space on the floor and the upright ones are better as their bodies are meant to hop, not run on flat ground. They have some great ones on Etsy, made of metal (I wouldn’t recommend the wooden ones either, they get pee on them and get gross!) there’s also this one, which looks to be good quality! hope this helps!
