This man knows his sleep. He spent his whole life researching it, and wrote the general findings in the book Why We Sleep. It was such an eye-opener for me, just unbelievable how much effect sleep has on our day-to-day life.
Caffeine directly counteracts your ability to sleep and the quality of it. I'm pretty sad about it because my parents drink a LOT of caffeine and they always complain about not sleeping. I tried suggesting to them that maybe their caffeine habit (addiction) is the problem, but they don't seem to think that is the problem...
Anyway if you want an interesting read, you should definitely read his book!
So what does Japan use in sodas in lieu of synthetic caffeine?
Caffeine Blues (originally written in 1998, but updated in mid-2000's) claimed that caffeine for soda comes from decaffeinated coffee, which I found hard to believe.
Yeah, seems logical to me. According to this article https://www.anabolicmen.com/stress-and-testosterone/ long term stress zaps your test levels. And many of us here are quitting caffeine because of stress related problems. We know for a fact now that coffee chronically increases stress hormones, and we know that elevated stress hormones is not good for T. Also, according to the same article, lowering stress increases testosterone. For example trough exercises like meditation. Coffee, as we all know, does the complete opposite of this, leaving us in chronic flight or fight mode.
Not only that, but coffee also has a bad effect on sleep. Getting a good nights sleep is crucial for testosterone.
So, coffee elevates stress hormones, fucks up your sleep, which logically would lead to lower levels of testosterone.
The younger generations also have lower testosterone now than we had before. But we are also a more stressed generation and we get piles of caffeine, sugar and processed food dumped onto us. But it might also be the chemicals we are exposed to. https://www.webmd.com/men/news/20140814/common-chemicals-may-lower-testosterone-levels-study-finds
According to the infographic on this page, caffeine can cause nausea, so if you're used to it, then suddenly drop your intake a bunch, it seems likely the disturbance could trigger nausea.
I’d really recommend reading Dark Secrets of Caffeine. The damage caffeine does to the mind is shocking. The author is not English so some of the English isn’t perfect, but it’s still a goldmine & really changed my view from “I’m sacrificing something” to “I can’t wait to be free of a poison”.
I’ve tapered to 100mg caffeine via tablets, Monday is zero - freedom day!
After Dark Secrets I read Allan Carr’s Quitting Caffeine. Very good but read Dark Secrets first, it radically changes your perception of caffeine. Allan Carr cements that.
Good luck!

Thanks for the input. When I searched Amazon US a lot of the results are a combination of regular coffee grounds and chicory, so after a bit of searching I found this one which I bought based on the good reviews.
Yes, here's the cheap one i take: https://www.amazon.com/Super-B-Complex-Methylated-Vitamins-Methylcobalamin/dp/B01787EPEE/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs1_0?cv_ct_cx=super+b+complex&dchild=1&keywords=super+b+complex&pd_rd_i=B01787EPEE&pd_rd_r=6e45df8e-9382-4be1-8466-f72...

Really quick read but it really unbrainwashes you.
This is it. I’m sure it’s available in the US too
I think this Dark Chocolate Teeccino is pretty delicious, and claims <1mg of caffeine. Their other flavors are good too.
I'm on Keto and found Teeccino makes a good Bullet Proof coffee (14g butter + 14g MCT oil).
Even just black, it benefits from a shake of salt and 2 drops of EZ-Sweetz.
In the end I switched to just roasted chicory which is much cheaper, and you use a lot less of it (~8g to make a 12oz cup).
You might consider non-stimulant medications that can help with ADHD:
I recommend reading Taking Charge of Adult ADHD which covers these medications in pretty good detail, along with strategies to cope with ADHD in all areas of your life.
A single decaf espresso shot has 8 mg of caffeine. I'm not sure how much caffeine is in the decaf pour-over (which you can order at most locations), but I'm guessing it has a bit. I just skip Starbucks and go for some 99.9% decaf coffee at home. This one is solid: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZMPVTW?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details.

Take magnesium!! My favorite is topical magnesium oil applied to my skin at night before bed, sleep like a baby. Most adults are already magnesium déficient, and caffeine further depletes magnesium stores in the body.

Reading your post made me think of other artist's such as Bach and Balzac who depended on coffee. Balzac also worked at night and consumed prodigious amounts of coffee.
As others have suggested tapering is probably sensible. I fear you are going to be in for a bit of a rough ride as so much of your life revolves around coffee.
I wish you all the best. Your health is worth it.
Yeah, I think the way you’re feeling is pretty normal considering the amount of caffeine you were consuming.
I’ve quit cold turkey before from similar daily amounts. I would only recommend doing so if you had a few weeks off from school/work/life responsibilities as you’ll be very fatigued during this time.
Tapering works much better using something like this: Caffeine Cleanse - Cure Your Caffeine Addiction Without Withdrawal Symptoms https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074GG8MPF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_PTJQ24M5VQCY43TF6VSM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1[Caffeine pills ]( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074GG8MPF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_PTJQ24M5VQCY43TF6VSM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

Good question. Personally I think caffeine is the most likely culprit, it's just that Starbucks makes their iced coffee hella caffeinated.
Apparently harmane has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects. I could be totally wrong but one hypothesis is that drinking lots of coffee elevates your harmane levels over time, then maybe what causes your anxiety attack is that you haven't had Starbucks iced coffee in a couple days, causing your harmane levels to dip below what had started to become the new baseline? Harmane is also found in cigarettes, by the way.
MAOIs are also sometimes used for anxiety, so the same principle could apply there. Again, this is just a hypothesis based on a quick search, but might be something worth looking into.
It seems kinda counterintuitive that something used to decrease anxiety could be causing you anxiety, but what I'm suggesting is that it's actually a short-term withdrawal from these substances that might cause an anxiety attack.
Please don't make any meds decisions without your doc.
Edit: Ok, Listen. My comment was not meant to have anything to do with patient autonomy or whether people need to take anti-depressants. Problem with just quitting anti-depressants is that you go through withdrawal. It's not like addition withdrawal, but remember these medications are changing your brain chemistry. There's even a name for this - Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome.
When you decide to get off antidepressants, you might need a doctor to prescribe you smaller doses of whatever you're taking. Yes, I know some tablets can be cut but some can't if they're extended release so that's where an expert comes in. So, again.
Please don't make any meds decisions without your doc.

Remember that everyone is different and while it could be caffeine withdrawals, maybe there are other factors in your life that are triggering your anxiety.
Lack of sleep messes everything up. No matter who you are, so be kind to yourself on that front and realize that some of it might be sleep derivation.

Have you tried meditating? That can also help! The Headspace app has helped me a lot with this
Therapy is another great alternative, which sounds like you have already incorporated in your routines.
Most importantly, be kind to yourself! This is a difficult transition and I’m sure it’ll take some time to adjust. Just do the best you can and take it day by day.
in the morning, have a routine to get your day started. Mine is to immediately walk my dog. It gets me out of the house and moving. Then I drink water, shower, do some quick exercise to stimulate my brain, and make my bed.
Love it!!! It's so important to establish routine!
An yes, according to some philosophies, making your bed is absolutely necessary! ;) (Check out the Make Your Bed book, for example. Also, KonMari .)
this one is the one I buy.
Natural vitality sorry... not nature's way.
have you tried Swiss water decaf? It's 99.99% caffeine-free (unlike regular decaf). I drink this one every day and it helps fill that void, but also if I run out or don't have it for a few days it has no negative effect on me.
I used ZestTea Blue Lady Tea as I quit caffeine. It has a comparable amount of caffeine to coffee, but tea is just easier to wean off of in my experience. Plus it’s delicious.

After becoming convinced by this sub last month I bought this on Amazon (currently unavailable sadly) based on the reviews and I have a reusable Keurig pod I put the grounds in. I bought my favorite hazelnut flavored creamer and it tastes to me like what I remember coffee tasting like.

I steep those in water then add frothed milk for a truly decaf latte.
Maybe try replacing boring ol’ water with something else... what I use is cold peppermint tea, which to me is the most refreshing drink ever. It makes me not miss coffee (and black/green tea) so much... and it has no caffeine in it.
To make it, just steep boiling water in peppermint leaves (I make about 96 ounces at a time), refrigerate overnight, and the next day i’m just drinking bliss...

When I quit I was looking for a 1x1 widget option so I could see the number of days at a glance on my main screen and after trying a couple I settled on this one. It's been interesting to randomly unlock my phone and see the number since I stopped paying close attention to my journey after a couple months.
Yeah.
Actually i have some kind of digestive issue that i haven't been able to pin down. My dad has it too, but worse. He's full blown crazy.
I can guzzle a bottle of cyanocobalamin and get zero effect from it and still feel depression haunting me. Whereas i can eat 3oz of oysters ( ~500% RDA of B12 in cobalamin format ) and become euphoric, with no hint of depression at all.
But methylcobalamin, i can absorb at a 1% rate. I take a supplement with 37,500% the RDA, and it actually works.
I have a similar problem with thiamine and some other B vitamins. I was low in thiamine and was experiencing a mild psychosis from it.
The last times i quit caffiene, i experienced depression so intense that i couldn't handle it. With my supplement, i didn't experience that. In fact, even when i was on 500mg caffiene, it eliminated the insane racing thoughts.
One thing of note is that caffiene depletes many vitamins, especially B. So when you withdraw, you are not only withdrawing from a drug, but you likely have no stores of those vitamins left which makes you feel worse.
This is what i take; there are plenty of others on the market for people with MHTFR though: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084G7H6C4?pf_rd_r=0NBQYW6N60FZ44H5TT5W&pf_rd_p=edaba0ee-c2fe-4124-9f5d-b31d6b1bfbee
Try a super high absorbability oriented B complex like this one:
I had a much easier time quitting both caffiene and nicotine using this. In particular, it allowed me to dodge the withdrawal depression bullet.
I still take it today.
Also, be patient with yourself. This is a process that will take some time. It's going to hurt and it's going to suck. But you're going to come out the other side better off.
If you are a devoted vegan, there are a dozen other nutrients in their vegetable form that the human body has poor, at best, to no ability to absorb. Having MTHFR on top of that is a double whammy. Many foods in vegan diets also contain antinutrients such as phytic acid, oxalates, protease inhibitors, glucosinolates, etc.
The really unfortunate thing about vitamin deficiencies is that some are hard to test for. Symptoms are actually a better sign than bloodwork in many cases.
Basically you've got a big rabbit hole to go down.
Yes, vitamins are not regulated so you really have to do your research to find the formats that absorb properly. I have major digestive issues that hinder the absorption of so many nutrients that i've had to figure out a lot of this myself. I have been reading clinical trials and research, and also experimenting on myself for 14 years.
Here is what i take. I only take half the recommended amount per day because it is very potent. It's a complete complex where the vitamins have already been transformed into either the exact, or very close to the format that your body actually uses.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01787EPEE/ref=twister_B084G7H6C4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I'm curious to see if you can replace your B12 injections with this.
If it doesn't work, you may lack intrinsic factor, which would make your digestive system unable to process B12 and perhaps a few other nutrients too. There are methylated B complexes that include intrinsic factor, but the source of the intrinsic factor is an extract from pig pancreas.
BTW i would always recommend a B complex over B12 alone. Because B1, B6, etc are also involved in mental health and global energy production. Learning that i was B1 deficient despite adequate intake changed my life.
Here is the best paper i know of which examines the relation of several nutrients to mental health disorders:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3046018/
Best wishes on your journey.
Glad i spoke to you. I hope you got some clues from this.
This is the specific one i take, btw: https://www.amazon.com/Super-B-Complex-Methylated-Vitamins-Methylcobalamin/dp/B01787EPEE/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs1_0?cv_ct_cx=super+b+complex&dchild=1&keywords=super+b+complex&pd_rd_i=B01787EPEE&pd_rd_r=857155f0-a053-4522-a137-35d...
This is a good place to start. However, down the line I’d try to find out WHY I kept switching from one addiction to another because it could be something else after this.

I love Chicory coffee. Someone in this sub suggested it. It isn’t really coffee, more like an herbal tea with no caffeine, but tastes like coffee to me. Drinking it right now. It has been a good substitute and I brew it in one of my reusable Kuerig pods. Just make sure you buy pure chicory coffee and not the kind mixed with regular coffee. I use the one below.
Oh damn, I'm really sorry to hear that. This may not be possible depending upon where you live but when I get up early I always go for a walk, it helps me process whatever's on my mind. If that doesn't help then journaling helps too.

Great Compilation of Research and Points at Real Change Ahead Most of us would agree that the tobacco industry pushed heavily to dupe American (and global) society into believing that their products were safe for consumption. Now, we live in a day where it’s common knowledge that cigarettes are disastrous for your health.
That said, it’s interesting to see how we have failed to notice the same tactic taking place with the “ever-virtuous” caffeine. Everybody’s best friend in the morning...
The author pulls no punches in denouncing the flimsy scientific studies that have corroborated caffeine’s “benefits” and points the flashlight at where the Caffeine industry (the 2nd most traded commodity to oil) actively meddles with the public’s health for profit.
It’s evident that the author did deep research to create this book, and it certainly illustrates things in a very scientific manner. The compilation of research and thorough understanding of each study is staggering.
The book, admittedly, can be a bit tricky to follow at times due to the use of some technical verbiage, but the author also has some very real and lighthearted moments, showcasing his personality and passion for the topic.
All in all, it’s a great eBook that has affirmed my decision to purify myself from caffeine and live a happier, longer, more restful life.
Recommended.
So do you believe that nothing new can be written about Caffeine Science?
Caffeine Science, like any other knowledge field, is dynamic and alive.
I'm bringing to light and explaining to the general public many recent scientific studies of utmost importance to be known by consumers of caffeinated products. I'm doing this because of these discoveries that affect global public health are not being informed by the mainstream media.
I'm skeptical of dedicating 7 years writing a book about Caffeine and being attacked inside a community interested in that subject.
People that didn't read my book attacking me all the time.
Am I offending you because I wrote a book about Caffeine?
Why do you assume that I'm a silly guy that has nothing important to say in that subject?
There are already two book reviews posted by readers of my book on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082VZZMRR
Did you read them?
Reading those book reviews may help you to understand what my book is really all about.
Volume I is just the first of a series.
Yes, I have a lot of more things to denounce about Caffeine.
The lack of support for my work in this community is astonishing.
Totally normal when cutting out a substance you were dependent on. I recommend this to anyone feeling any sort of mentally out of balance in any way. It's cheap and effective. https://www.amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336 . Best of luck and hope you feel normal again soon!
There are 13 days I'm out of caffeine and alcohol. For me when I used to drink coffee I was more prone to drink alcohol.
I tried a lot of times and just now I figured out that there was much more emotional reasons for me to drink caffeine and alcohol than just because I like it.

I used to drink coffee because it messes my mind and idk how but it relief a little bit my anxiety. When I started to understand those reasons, I stopped wanting caffeine and started to feel the need to take care of myself. That way is a way easier, since I'm getting to the inner reasons.

The same with alcohol... I used to drink because I want to turn off my stress, anxiety and depression. But with time I started to see that it was worsing my symptons. Then I keep drinking only beer and it was ok until the point I saw that I was getting fat and causing health issues.

Basically we use any king of drugs to hide our pain. The best thing you can do is to find a good therapist to help you in this inner understanding and I would recommend this book:

It was a blow mind for me in various aspects.

I was thinking about creating a whatsapp group for people in this journey so we can help each other... if you have interest, send me a message!
these are great, they only have 50mg of caffeine per pill:
No! I buy the tea bags.
Caffeine Cleanse is an option, only 20mg per pill and no other active ingredients.
Try to avoid naps and optimize sleep. If you absolutely can't make it through the day without a nap, set an alarm for 15 minutes, and lay on the floor with your legs propped up on something so the blood can go to your head.
Try optimizing your sleep. I'll list the usual shit if you don't already know: Use a physical alarm, turn your phone and other electronics off an hour before going to bed, make sure your room is pitch black when you sleep, set the thermostat a few degrees lower than usual while you sleep, invest in blue blocking glasses and wear them an hour before sleep https://www.amazon.com/Uvex-Blocking-Computer-SCT-Orange-S1933X/dp/B000USRG90/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525639322&sr=8-1&keywords=uvex+blue+blocking&dpID=41xZuWrtIsL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Sleep in complete silence. If you live with someone, use ear plugs. Foam ear plugs have been known to cause tinnitus and are uncomfortable. Try going to an audiologist and having them make you some custom molded silicone injected ear plugs. They're like $300 but they're so worth it. Look into black out blinds.
Set your physical alarm clock in a drawer so you won't look at it and be stressed that you don't have much more time to sleep.
Wake up at the same time every day and eat a large breakfast that's high in fats and protein. This will help with your circadian rhythm. Avoid carbs and sugars at breakfast.
Try to exercise during the day, and you've already tackled the most important thing which is don't drink caffeine.
Good luck sleepy man.
Swiss Water Decaf is 99%caffeine free (which means only about 3 mg caffeine per cup) and I think it tastes just as good as regular coffee... here's the brand I use (k-cups): https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Coffee-Co-Compatible-Decaffeinated/dp/B076HQ3G8B/?th=1
