Nest Aware with Video History Cloud Recording has a new name. And it’s getting better. If you have seven-day Cloud Recording, you now get ten days of Video History. We also improved motion detection, so you get more accurate alerts.
What happens to the Dropcam app? There are still a few features in the Dropcam app that aren’t part of the Nest app. So until we add control by location, email alerts, and video sharing, we’ll keep the Dropcam app up and running.
Wifi radio channel could be very busy with traffic. Not just yours but neighbors. Most routers default at channel 6. WIFI isn't a switch and performs more like a hub regarding radio traffic.

Channels 1,6 and 11 are the only ones without overlap.
Pick the one with the least number of stronger signals remembering the overlap. I'm not a fan of auto channel setting and would rather re-scan when issues appear. i.e. I might be on 1 permanently and let those other routers play the auto game.
I suspect with the apps you aren't streaming HD down but with the web browser you are...
Nest hasn't sold a Dropcam branded product in a while, it was likely a 3rd party seller, although on the Amazon site it can be confusing about the manufacturer vs the seller.
For example: https://www.amazon.com/Dropcam-Wireless-Monitoring-Security-Camera/dp/B00F9FCW7K
The title says: Dropcam Pro Wifi Wireless Video Monitoring Security Camera by Nest
but if you look at the small print, it says "sold by AG LLC".
I think your best course of action is to file a complaint with the Amazon seller that they sold an unsupported version of the product and ask for a refund.
I don't see local storage happening. It is out of fashion. Cloud recording is here to stay. As you know, with Dropcam, it's $50 per year for each extra camera.
Have you seen Hawkcam Pro?
