Bit late to this but here's a Soundcloud playlist for my top Electronic tracks and favourite remixes.
A few that have already been mentioned but a fair few that haven't
Found from this mix. I have absolutely no idea how I stumbled across a mix posted by a guy with exactly 1 follower, but I'm not complaining.
Serious jam. Thanks for sharing! Have you seen the "Peoples Potential Family Album" here: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Peoples-Potential-Family-Album/release/2081839? Some nice selections in the vein of this one.
I had no idea. For at least 10 years straight I would hit the local (Manchester) record shops every Saturday without fail. Now I have a huge vinyl collection in storage with no clue what to do with it.
I only realised I had this again because the Mister Saturday Night label included it on a compilation and on a vinyl sampler for it. It is on Discogs here
Thanks for the feedback Vespera! I'm always up for some criticism :D I never ended up finishing it but maybe I'll take another crack at it. The track youre after is Laird & John Pickett "Ohhh Ma Ma Ma": http://www.beatport.com/track/ohhhh-ma-ma-ma-original-mix/935804
cheers!
Yeah dude, Cowley has been around for a long time making disco, ambient, techno, etc. This cut is from a compilation of some of his obscure stuff called School Daze, released in 2013 by Honey Soundsystem Records. Nightcrawler and several others on the album were actually made for gay porn films in the '70s and '80s.
Sadly he dies in 1982, but be sure to check out the rest of his stuff.
I was a bit wary of this topic based on the headline but you did a good job of framing it with a real consideration for the complex issues here. I was recently thinking how "funk" was the first music that was consciously black, while it could be argued that blues, jazz, etc were definitely part of the African-American cultural milieu, funk was the first to state "Say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud!" Disco however was more closely related to the gay subculture initially, as I understand it.
I'd certainly put Arthur Russell on the list of three funkiest, and I think David Byrne qualifies too. Obviously Eno would be the man to round out this unholy trinity, but I think guys like Giorgio Moroder also deserve serious recognition for their funky, funky stylings. Sorry I don't have access to my music library to search for top songs now. It's also pretty hard to put into words what exactly makes these artists "funky". To me it's kind of like the notion of "soul", or "quality" as it was explained in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance -- that ineffable characteristic that defines the most compelling forms of art.
Never would have guess this was more italo than philly or motown (in terms of geography at least). I guess you can kind of hear it in the heavy reliance on synth tones. I just want to know, is it boogie? Anyway, ace selection. Never stop doing that thing you do.
Great album. A lot of the stuff comin out of HKE / dream catalogue is really nice especially if you like ambient which is a little different. He did a show with Ruf Dug on NTS (which is really good): https://www.mixcloud.com/NTSRadio/ruf-dug-hke-23rd-october-2015/
Vaporwave gets a lot of grief but there's some good stuff getting put out there
Have you ever had the chance to listen to this version?
You can't really find it anywhere on the internet, but there is a mixcut on YouTube.
If anyone thinks these links are inappropriate, please say so.
Yup :) The soul vocal is fucking great, and that bassline just rolls the groove along, right? There's another pretty damned good mix too, which'd work at a different time or in another set, though the original is definitely my fave. Merry Christmas Savyna69 :)
Well thanks for the example. I do see that Beatport groups nu disco together with 'indie dance' so I guess LCD Soundsystem could be considered nu disco.
Lots of good recommendations already. Would add the "Air Jordan" EP from 2562/A Made up sound. I really miss this kind of stuff. Randomer's new one on LIES is sort of going back to this vibe.
