I'm not sure it's unrecoverable, just that my macbook pro had gone into a kernel panic and they wanted to charge me almost $100 just to tell me it was a kernel panic. I plan on using the first method listed here to see if I can get my stuff back!

(also I should note I had backed everything up, but...was an idiot and backed up iPhoto not my iPhoto Library. Still kicking myself for that.)
